Pet Peeves in video games

It gets even more annoying when you end up dying and the game sends you to a point before the cutscene is triggered, starting the whole process again.

Me after seeing all the unskippable cutscenes in both Max Payne 3 and God Of war 3
In Max Payne 3 completing the New york minute Hardcore mode is hell because if you die only one time is back to the beginning of the game and you have to see the unskippable cutscenes again

The hilarious part is that speedruns of games with unskippable cutscenes exist, which is amusing. Although some mods are made for those games, like Final Fantasy X which cut out a whopping 8-9 hours out of the speedrun time.
The Human Revolution community has a shared safe file that starts right after the unskippable BS, and it's the official speedrunning starting point.

The one time where unskippable cutscenes really got to me was final fantasy 8 when you would summon an eidolon and it would play this beautiful minute long animation EVERY SINGLE TIME.

i actually quit playing the game halfway because of this, but whats worse is i passed on ff9 and x, (and we even had a copy of 9, i just didnt play it!)

I didnt return to the series until x-2 because i thought squenix had done gone oft-they rockers.

i must have gone to heck for it, because when i tried to repent, i played ff9 for about 10 hours on steam, but (at that time) the steam version didnt have any cloud saves. Then, I was playing a show at an art gallery in OC, and a twacked out dude attacked and destroyed my computer, so my game save was lost...

I pray to cutscene jesus to save me!

In Doom 2016 there's a long community work about skipping the intro. It's great

Golden Sun is filled with this stuff and they are long too because characters shake or something every two words. Some cutscenes are way too long or just unnecessary( the first time you go on the ship is just so bad).

If Golden Sun was made today, you just now it would be a movie game.

I enjoy the cut scenes, and dislike skipping them...with the exception of scenes right before a boss fight on a second-or-more attempt. Especially if the game offers a Retry option after death - THEN there's no excuse to not offer a skip.

Ah yes this is how I felt replaying mp3 waiting for the cutscenes to end

At the very least cutscenes should be skippable after the first time you see them. They get pretty annoying on repeat playthroughs or when brickwalling on a hard boss.

I’m usually incredibly lenient on game quirks however if your game has a large amount of long unskippable cutscenes you should be banned from existence.
be careful what you wish for. you can't skip cutscenes in ffx. you can skip cutscenes in ffx-2. if you do, you lose out on the perfect ending. you will have to replay through the entire game again in order to get a 100% complete file.

That’s terrifying, as if FFX2 wanted to win some kinda worst sequel award. Hey at least I like Yuna it, for specific reasons :p

fortunately, in ff9, the longer cutscenes for summons increase the damage that they do. the remaster for 10 allows you to play shorten versions of the intros and overdrive attacks for aeons after you've seen them once.

it is a very weird sequel. i didn't get very far in it when i was younger mainly because of the magical girl transformation scenes. i wasn't a fan of sailor moon at the time, so it didn't interest me in seeing those scenes. if lulu was involved, i probably would have changed my mind. when i learned about the cutscene skipping locked you out of the true ending, which happened to me because i skipped the parts i already went through, i decided that i would just wait until later to play it, preferably with a checklist to make sure that i got everything.
yuna is a good character, but paine and lulu are my favorites from 10.

Even then, the official retail strategy guide had a late-game screw-up so that if the guide was followed religiously you'd only get something like 99.8% completion.

Again, yay Code Breaker and 100% Completion code!

there's a fatal bug in the game where finishing up zanarkand last causes the game to mess up and become incompletable. if you finish up zanarkand first in chapter 5, the fatal glitch doesn't occur. the strategy guide was probably done in sections or the list of stuff to do is based off of the menu used to select what place that you want to go to.

For games that offer such customizability, I should be able to edit my character's name and appearance at any time for free. It's my fantasy, I should be able to rewrite it as I see fit. Stop making me spend one hour at the character creator out of fear of not being 100% decided.

Agreed. Monster Hunter has always been terrible about this (for classic games you needed a save editor, for 5th gen onward you need to buy a char editing ticket with real money) while pretty mudh every other game in this space lets you change appearance for free at any time.

My own nitpick is somewhat adjacent - I don't like when games don't let you reset builds. Why make it so difficult for the player to experiment and have fun?

This is a big one for me too. It doesn't help that sometimes characters end up looking different between static character creation and gameplay due to lighting.

I hate when characters turn around in a stiff way rather than organically. MOBAs and MMOs are examples of this.

And dont forget Minecraft, the 3d Fallout games and the Elder Scrolls games

In Xenoblade X, after you've made a certain amount of progress in the game, you can find a guy who gives you a mission to help him set up a new business. If you finish it, he creates a back alley body shop. Basically, you can pay him to reopen the character creator.

There should be both a manual save feature and an auto save feature, not only one of them
Some games do this, like the recent Legend of Zelda games.

I want my characters to stop dying from touching water.

My guys on GTA and Red Dead Redemption can tank being ran over, shot at, and even falling from great heights, but Lord forbid they got wet.
I'm surprised no gang member has realized that the ultimate weapon in that world is a super soaker.

There should be a way to get all the pokemon from a region without having to buy both versions of the games and two consoles
A lot of improvement hacks for the series make a point of fixing this issue.

As for why it works that way, it's a Japanese thing. Basically, you are supposed to bring the game and its system with you to school and meet up with friends who play Pokémon. Then you trade with them with a 50% chance that some of them bought the other version. If they didn't, you'll find someone else eventually in your friend group or school who got it. If not, you most likely take public transport, so you'll find some kid there who has it. Not a kid? Don't worry, you take public transport; you'll run into a kid playing it eventually.

Of course, Nintendo is double dipping on the game's profits. While Nintendo has been risk-averse on some of the shadier gaming industry practices, they are still in a country where nickle-and-diming practices are rampant for a lot of things. (And gatcha is pretty much everywhere in some form.) And Japanese people have just come to accept that these are part of business.
