Ever come across that game or game series that embodies so much of what you love that you in turn should totally be into them but when reality hits they fall flat and you just can't bother.

For me, everything Mega Man. It checks nearly all the boxes for me but once I start I just can't get into it regardless of which one it is.

As much as it pains me to say it, eternal sonata, it has colorful graphics, a lighthearted story and a form of active combat system, but it's just...no.

For me it's any monster hunting game that isn't Monster Hunter. I played most clones and despite most checking the right boxes and being creative, they mostly don't satisfy me nearly as much.

Any Metroid or Castlevania, or (God Forbid) "Metroidvania" inspired Indie game. I tried playing games like Hollow Knight and through the opening act of the game I kept thinking "Damn... I could really be playing Metroid Fusion right now..." and always drop the game. Mind you the little I did play was fun, just didnt scratch that spot for me sadly

I don't like Stardew Valley.
But the thing is, I like farming sims, and as far as I can tell Stardew Valley is the ultimate farming sim. It's clearly the best version of Harvest Moon despite not being a Harvest Moon game. And yet for some reason... I don't like it.

I think there's something fundamentally different about the game compared to the similar games I love, that I can't quite put my finger on. And I think it's the same reason why the cosy game genre has suddenly gone mainstream despite the continued obscurity of all of the older titles that I love.
Also I know it's not nostalgia by the way, since I have found a few similar old titles that I've never played before, and still love them. So there's definitely something that's different that's making it boring for me... but I don't know what.

Non-Ace Combat dogfight sims, i tried finding one, but non scratch my itch, so far i have only found three exceptions:

Mysims skyfighters
Snoopy vs The Red Baron
And the closest one to actual Ace Combat: Sky Crawlers, Innocent Aces, for a Wii, the last one is easly the Ace Combat 4 i couldn't play until now

I don't like them either, not because they're bad but because they are the "we have monster hunter at home".

Most recently, had to be The Outer Worlds.

I was so sure this was going to be up my alley and down the street, hitting me where I live. Everything about it is "just enough" though, like there weren't time or resources to really flesh it out. The combat's okay, not amazing, the dialogue is fun but sparse in places, there's only a handful of quests in any location, and very little of the unexpected.

I thought it was gonna blow my fucking back out, but it's just....fine. Fingers crossed for the sequel.

Pokemon.

Turn based combat with tactical depth? Check.

Lots of stuff to collect? Check.

fantastic art? Check.

Lots of lore and an interesting world to dig into? Check.

JRPG genre? More or less Check...

and yet, the game only works for me as an insomnia cure. I cannot get into any of them, despite several attempts (although I'll admit I haven't tried some of the most recent ones).

The really weird part? I loved Detective Pikachu. The movie, I mean.

smt

really grindy like to the extreme and i take moral issue with the themes and messaging of the series. Especially its portrayal of my faith. also no character was interesting to me.

I tried a couple as a teenager and couldn't get past the 5 hour mark because of one reason or another

The second reason of dislike is actually interesting, pardon me for prying but can I assume you are Christian? (I am too, just want to see why it bothered you)

The religious overtones of SMT never bothered me personally. It's not the designers' intent to attack any given faith, and I understand that. They are just framing materials for the games' moral conumdrums.

I was gonna touch on the subject after his response, but I can use yours. In the game's lore, "God" is called Axion, and its energy given form, it exists outside of our reality so we can never reach it, but we can influence it. Its extremelly influenced by human cognition, so when humanity triggers a catastrophic event the Axion takes action and starts to dissepate energy to our reality, but this energy takes form of our cognition, I.E. religious figures, so the minor Gods you find on your playthrough have limited power depending on their faith, the bigger the faith the stronger the God, but they also take the personality of our interpretation of them. My point is: The Gods of this world are a reflection of our biased understanding of them, so lets say the hebrew and christian God YHVH is just a projection of our reverance towards him, and not ACTUALLY him, so it ends up being more of a critique of people's less than ideal interpretation of the sacred texts than an actual honest representation of the divine. Thats what I got from it, at least.

Deus Ex. I love cyberpunk(Or post-cyberpunk). I love the story and all its implciations and references. I love the look and sound of the game, and how late 90s it feels is so charming and different.

At the same time, I can't stand the gameplay. I find it soo boring. I like Dishonored and even Thief or prey(other immersive sim type games), but Deus ex just makes me feel like I am pulling teeth, even with multiple enhancement patches and mods. I never want to force myself to enjoy a game.

You mean classic or modern?

While i don't blame you for being offended (i kinda have a problem with any game wanting you to kill god, not to mention that it ignores the "i am all" aspect of the one true god in religions, aka if you could kill him you'd kill yourself), but i think your misunderstanding the SMT series, the maker of the series has gone on record that it's not the actual gods of the faith, but people's "ideas" of them, to put it another way, the SMT universe is handled by some kind of even higher force than anything in the SMT universe, the "gods" in the smt universe is people's view of those "gods" given form, another way to put it, pretty much most of the gods in smt are tulpa's of varying powers, if enough people believe something, it will gain form essentially.

He went on record to state that YHVH in SMT that you fight in some of the games is not the christian god, but people's view of him.

I fucking hate Devil May Cry. It has everything I SHOULD love: Industrial Metal, Gothic Horror, Demons, and the ones I played (1, 2, 3) are all from the best era of gaming in my opinion.

But when I played them... oh how I despised every second of it. That specific style of combat is something I generally dislike in games and I feel like only a very tiny handful of games have properly pulled off the "Stylish Action" type of gameplay (Dishwasher and the first Darksiders) in a way I can tolerate. While I am aware of 2's issues I felt the same way about 1 and 3 when I played those, I was completely unfulfilled by the combat.

Literally what I said, but more concise. Kudos to you!

To be honest I don't vibe with character action games like Bayonetta or DMC either. It's visually cool and flashy, but doesn't feel rewarding to me.

i love rpgs. i like fantasy themes. i can't get into final fantasy. I ve tried with 1-7 and tactics, and i can't get into them. Others Rpgs like Dragon Quest, Chrono Trigger, SMT... No problem at all, is just Final fantasy. And the sad part is that i want to like them :c

what the author says in an interview has little affect on what actually goes on the games. It can not change the fact that you play as individuals that summon and make deals with demons in order to battle against God, as in Captial G God, who is portrayed as evil. I will not participate in or fund it.

And even before I discovered just how outright satanic the series is, i didn't find it to be that good anyways due to grinding and the obtuse ways they did character progression, like I said I tried a couple as a teenager and never got past the 5 hour mark

I once watched a yt video by moon channel explaining the cultural and historical reasons for why many eastern rpgs have a deific figure as the final boss. And while I still agree yeah it is a problem and no that good overall. It did give insight as to why it is so prevalent. here it is linked below
