I just finished the first Full Metal Alchemist anime and some scenes and arcs shocked me both visually and by the plot twists.
Now I'm in the mood to play some games that makes me to light up a cigarette (I don't smoke) and say "man...", preferably in retro platforms, like until PSX, but PS2 and PS3 works too. I just don't want any really modern game.
And if it was possible, the less spoiler-ish, the better.
I'd personally say Tales of Berseria (you can get it on Steam or PS3), because there were moments of the game where I did need to take a break for a few days because of the story and stare outside the window like

First time replying to someone on here, so im sorry if its rough lol
Linda cubed is supposedly like what your saying- I dunno personally because I haven't finished it but it seems pretty good!
Silent hill 1 is often considered not as good as 2 but personally I think it stands next to it pretty damn well.
Metal gear solid 1-3, especially 2. Sons of liberty fucked me up man.
I know these are kinda basic responses but yeah man, if you haven't played these before I highly recommend em. I'd recommend more but this is all I can think of that fits your question, plus my brains kinda fried so ye, have fun and get to pondering bro
Postal 1998. It is just mindless violence in terms of gameplay, but the little bits of story it sprinkles really add up to the experience. As for it being fun... eh. It can get difficult, and it WILL kick your ass. It really depends on if you like difficult games (I do).
I prefer the old (now-free) version of the game than the redux version. I don't want to spoil much, but it changes a part of the original experience that I feel is more impactful than redux's take. It also takes itself more seriously than the redux version.

Danganronpa V3 is the only I've never played. Thanks for the suggestion, I'm in a mood for a visual novel. And Nier (and Drakengard) is the kind of game I was thinking when I made this thread lol.

Linda³ Again is on my backlog right now! I didn't know that the game has some shocking content tbh, just downloaded because it's a JRPG (?) in a modern setting.

I never got into Postal tbh :/ The edgeness by the sake of edgeness by western developers don't really grab my attention. But who knows if I change my mind someday.
Hmmm, saying as little as possible, it's kind of understated, but Legend of Legaia kind of blindsides the player with some pretty horrifying content. The game is grim but optimistic for a long time and then just wallops the player near the endgame. Specifying the endgame bc you might not wanna play through an entire psx jrpg just for that.

I've never finished Legend of Legaia, the combat system is a little off to me (but curious nonetheless) and I would never tought that it had a shocking content. Definitely on my list.

Well, shocking might not be the right word. It's not like... untelegraphed, and the game doesn't use its cinematography to frame things up like a horror movie. It's just that the writers asked the question "What's the worst thing that could happen only in this universe we created," answer it, and drop it in the game.
for a psx jrpg that pulls no punches and actually does use its cinematography to great effect, I think Breath of Fire 4 is good. It's a really tonally uneven game that bounces between asinine cartoon episodes and some really brutal scenario writing.

This is more or less what I want to experience tbh. Don't need anything graphic or violent, but things like the slowburn, pessimistic twists on the first Drakengard for example.
think breath of fire 4 is really good at that. with legaia, it's like I said, things are kind of grim but optimistic most of the time. unless you really like playing the game, Iunno about sitting through just for the part I talked about.
bof4 twists sorrow and horror together really well and really, really doesn't pull its punches when it wants to. helps that it has some of the best pixel art ever to sell the scenes.
