Game franchises that have regressed

I dont care if it makes business sense, chasing and hitting the actual trends always makes business sense in the short term but chases away a lot of old fans and will ultimately ruin the franchise almost every single time ever because the casual audience is a lot of things but being loyal to the product isnt one of them.
You are free to not care, but being sour about it won't change the mind of Capcom execs. Fans will always stay, it's Capcom's responsibility to acknowledge this by, again, giving classic fans access to the whole library .

They give you a lot of options to customize your experience regardless. My only gripe is that don't have to find the monster, I liked doing that but now I have the marker in my screen. Other than that, it's a fine game.

I think Capcom shouldn't have added damage numbers or infinite wheat stones, after that it's been an improvement.
The damage numbers are one of the few improvements imo, almost everything else is just bad, the nerfed to death monsters both in dmg and hp, the overpowered mount, infinite heals, laughably bad open world combat, performance and so much more, the games just not challenging in the slightest at all. Finally knowing what works and how good it works/how much dmg different attacks deal is a godsend but its completely useless since everything dies if you look at it sternly.

All franchises regress over time but what came to mind was Medal of Honor as just 1 example.
That was one I almost mentioned until I thought about Halo. I wouldn't say the lows were that bad really, just a shame to see them not hold up to the great first few games. I'll even say that I enjoyed the complete CoD clone reboot they tried, Warfighter.

Why would i think that any kind of Capcom exec cares about what i think? Bringing this up in a pointless rant about franchises we think went to shit is even more pointless.

Final fantasy is the perfect example of this imo. It's just impossible for me to look at the series without seeing the sense of loss.
As someone that sees 12 as the end of it, I agree with you.
I can’t admit it mainly because I can’t really see it as an actual ”steady” decline, moreso that there have been both steep ups AND steep downs. It’s similar to Sonic, or Spider-Man, nowadays, where every fan and creator has their own specific view of what it should and shouldn’t be, and kind of becoming too big for its britches and failing to please everyone, so there will always be a squadron of fans who very vocally both like and dislike it, and that tribalism sort of confirms to me that it hasn’t totally shit the bed yet.

Square being dumbasses and not knowing what to focus on and blowing money on trends and weird risks nobody asked for is a tale as old as time though.

And affects most franchises to sometimes disastrous effects.

Don't forget about Special Forces
Saw some quick gameplay footage just now, I did find the aesthetic very pleasing. Which means, if the gameplay is shitty, then it breaks my heart ::sadkirby

Can't rly think of any significant ones off the top a my head aside from Spider-Man games and I already vented my frustrations with those in the "disappointing second part" thread

Mainly cause when a series starts to decline in quality or gets neglected by it's company nowadays, there's a well-made spiritual successor created to fill it's place. Hell, MULTIPLE spiritual successors with people from the OG series working on them. Ppl in a lot of more general spaces don't like to acknowledge this cause of Mighty No 9 and Balan Wonderworld, but those two were all on the ego of their creators rather than the task being particularly difficult.

Final Fantasy is still doing the exact same thing they've always been doing, but unfortunately game development means it takes a decade before you'll get your next mainline game now.

If you didn't like 13, don't worry, 14 will launch in 3 years. Nevermind, 14 was a disaster and had an in-universe reset as a result three years after that... oh, you don't like MMOs anyways? Don't worry though, in another three years you'll finally get 15! Oh, didn't like 15 either? 16 will be your game, trust me, just wait 7 years. Wait, you don't like 16 either? Fine, in 2033 we got you with 17, trust me.

at least back in the ps1 and ps2 days if you didn't like that specific FF game, maybe the next one in one or two years would get you. I can find forum posts from back when 7 dropped and there were people doomposting about how it didn't feel like FF anymore because of how different it was to the first six games. If only they were psychic and could see 9 was coming in a few years specifically as a throwback to that era lol.

It's a real stinker, unfortunately, even compared to Mythologies. It was a cool idea at least of having a run-and-gun spin off with Jax, but clearly it did not work out. I think the biggest issue is it's really just 'bad bad', at least with Mythologies there's some cheesy cutscenes and the whole thing feeling like a fever dream.

Totally with you. Thought the series was amazing up until World. World stripped away everything that made MonHun what it was. Wilds looked okay; I even played two of the three betas. But after playing the beta the second time, I said, "That was neat, but I wonder what there will be to do besides hunting monsters?" That was a real record scratch moment for me. I was asking what else there was to do besides hunt monsters in a game about hunting monsters, titled Monster Hunter. I cancelled my preorder and never looked back.

That said, I actually really enjoyed Sunbreak. I thought Rise was really barebones and dropped it pretty quick after release, but Sunbreak is my most played game in the series. Not my favorite, but still had a great time playing it.
I actually finally bought Rise/Sunbreak recently. The portable team tends to make the better games imo. So far it's a bit faster than I'd prefer MonHunt to be but that doesn't make it bad. I'm having a great time with it. It has plenty of that stylistic flair that I felt World was missing. Like sure you play Monster Hunter to hunt monsters but I always appreciated how much charm and color the older entries had.

Well Fallout really Fell out with 76, good luck with Elder Scrolls 6 guys! I am sure Bethesda can't make a bad game 3 times in a row.

It's the never ending cycle of "new bad, old good". Sort of makes these kind of topics a worthless endeavor.

My take is... The megami tensei franchise (I know somebody here already said persona but i'm expanding it to include the others as well).
The games are still great, SMT V, Vengeance, Soul Hackers 2, Raidou Remastered, 3 Reload, these are all still solid games by every metric. But I think there's a very noticeable difference in the gameplay balance and atmosphere between the older entries and newer ones. Not trying to say the older ones were flawless but like, 3 Reload is hilariously unbalanced towards the player's favor for example.

doesn't help that this *is* a retro games forum, so I would assume most of the people here prefer older games to newer ones to start with lmao

If they would just stop trying to copy Devil May Cry in the worst way possible i would like 15/16, i like almost everything about 15 but the worst part about the game is 100% the combat. Either give me better DmC like combat or give me turn based stuff back pls -.-

The exact same? Dude there hasnt been a turn based FF in 20 years. just give me turn based stuff back and im happy. Stop trying to copy Devil may Cry very badly or whatever the fuck XIII/2/3 was. I actually like 15 but the combat is torture. I still havent played 16 or the 7 remakes because i know that the combat and the rewrites in 7 specifically will just make me sad (theyve been installed for years at this point though and i cant bring myself to start any of them -.-). That combat in the original Crisis Core on PSP was bearable and a nice distraction for a while but thats about it, i wish it would have died there.

These kinds of threads work when it leads to good discussion about the content rather than just basic doomposting, to be fair.

I'd really love to see Medal of Honor make a comeback... Before the CoDs I've played a lot of Underground and Allied Assault. Really a sad thought but who knows?
I think it's still owned by EA, so who knows. Respawn made that last VR game maybe they'll get another go at it eventually.

Frankly... I can't believe I forgot about the top example of this sort of thing: Banjo-Kazooie.

It started out as the reason to buy a Nintendo 64 for, then delivered one hell of a sequel. But then... Crickets, a teaser for what promised to be one of the greatest third parts ever, a car-building game that had nothing to do with the franchise it was posing as, a weird (but good) demake on the GBA, and then the ultimate punishment: banishment to the gulag of handheld spin-offs.

Rare, Microsoft and Nintendo somehow turned a license for printing money into a forgotten dumpster fire.

Final Fantasy stopped being turn-based long before 20 years ago, they switched to ATB based back on the SNES. They have always been innovating and trying new things while building off previous systems. From FF4 to FF9 they used the ATB system, changing up the gameplay with different characters and jobs, building off what the (admittedly far more basic) first three games paved way for. 10 then introduced the conditional turn-based system. 11 ignored 10 and went with its own combat system as it was an MMO, although still taking inspiration from the previous entries in other ways (mainly the job system, although traces of the original battle system can still be found). 12 was then taking inspiration from 11, but with much more ATB influence. 13 went back to being purely ATB driven, although its own take on it. 14 took most of its inspiration from 11, as it was the only previous MMO, although by this point its been updated and changed so much over the years that a lot of that inspiration is less visible.

The two (2) FF games to then be completely different than the rest of the series are 15 and 16. And even then I could argue for what comparisons they do have, although less explicitly obvious than previous entries.

Final Fantasy's strength has always been in its stories and characters for me, and that's the one thing I think this franchise has never compromised on in any mainline entry, but I will defend its gameplay because I think it being an anthology series with each entry having its own unique gameplay mechanics that fit the game has been one of its strengths since the beginning (since 2 technically but whatever). You aren't going from 4 to 16. Its 4 to 5. 5 to 6. 6 to 7 all the way to 16, and in that manner 16 builds off what came before just as the earlier games did. Its gameplay and narrative were chosen for a reason. It does not exist in a vacuum.

The Wild Arms series starts strong on PS1 but I think the art direction and mood starts to get watered down after that.

I feel like Gran Turismo keeps feeling less like a "CarPG" as it goes and that's a bummer. I didn't get to play the last mainline entry though. To me, 4 was the last really fulfilling one.

Star Ocean just completely shits itself as far as I'm concerned lmao. Huge letdown because I'd love a good JRPG space opera. I always hope it's gonna lean into the whole "Star" part promised in the name and not the excruciating casts of characters landing on generic fantasy worlds. Combat is always fun though lol

franchises doomed to weird handheld/spinoff hell for all eternity... May they get the love they deserve in the future

Nostalgia is both blinding and true.

I don't think there's a single franchise from my childhood that I can honestly say improved over time. It's the natural way of things... Games evolve with every new entry to their series and that's perfectly fine (and the basis for a worthwhile conversation if taken as such), but it also means that they slowly lose the identity that had started the whole love affair in the first place.

I think that my favorite example of a series changing drastically but remaining the same is GTA: the first two don't look or play anything like anything that came after the third, but the core idea has remained and been built upon perfectly. Too bad it's the exception rather than the rule.
