Front-Mission-2-jpn-psx-coverart.jpg

A translation effort that builds on top of the Front Mission 5 Team's version to cover what that version could not. It is considered 90% done and fully playable from start to finish. All that seems to be left untouched as of now are certain graphical elements from the UI.

Author(s): Grand_Veterinarian68
Type: Translation
Version: 1.0
Date: 30th of June, 2026
Status: Playable
Source: https://www.reddit.com/r/frontmissi...elease_front_mission_2_translation_extension/

RB's Notes 1: If you are using Duckstation (you should), in order to preserve your sanity, tweak this particular game's settings so that the CD seek speed setting is set to maximum, otherwise, look forward to almost 8 seconds of waiting before battle animations load for every engagement.

RB's Notes 2: MTL regards only descriptions and is placeholder. Text will be either human translated or sourced from the remake going forward.

Thanks to all for your replys, i have a general idea now. The only mecha srpg i played was Ring of Red on PS2 way back then and totally loved it, i might end diving in FM now.
Ring of Red is really good. Front Mission plays a bit differently, but the gameplay is still great, especially in terms of customization for your mechs. The storyline for all the games is great too, and it has the same kind of industrial real robot vibes as Ring of Red. Some of the spinoffs like Evolved and Left Alive are pretty bad though.

So glad for the hard work on this TL!
I'm a big Front Mission fan, though I admit I got into it with 3, though I always wanted to play 2.

I'm swimming against the current here, but I really like the remakes. Given how little SE cares, I'm glad there's some form of widely distributed option for the series that sits somewhere between classic and modern. I think it strikes a good balance.

Equally, I'm glad we have options for a classic experience, too thanks to the many translation and bugfix patches for the original games.

I'm totally noob on this series, but i heard that people prefer the original FM2 version over the remake, why is that? censorship? bad translation? bugs and glitches?
There is a lot more issues than you think since I beaten the Remake version more than multiple times and here is the list of issues presented on the game :

1. Battle animation are stripped down to FM1 Remake style instead of the Original FM2 which totally ruined the aesthetic of the game and when the battle animation happened, the wanzer sometimes still persist on Battlefield desipte they are completely destroyed during battle and this will give you lots of annoying things happened on the map.
2. The accuracy of weapon are completely misleading due they did not calculate the Terrain effect, weapon accuracy modifier etc especially on Long-range weapons like Rockets, Missiles, Bazzokas and Cannons always prone to miss even if says 90% Hit but in reality like 70% or below due the terrain effect are being excluded. FM2 Original version have much more accurate Hit Rate while Remake doesnt care abut it thus miss shots are very common.
3. If you recruit Arena teams during POW Camp revisit on later stages, you should not save too much in the mission because they will gone and your squad will be pinched on both sides instead of your own team on the front while the Arena squad holding enemies from backside.
4. Translation on Remake are meh at best with lots of typos and mistranslated everywhere, its like they just MTL and did not even tried to proofreading it.
5. Even with 2 years of updates, there are so many issues everywhere in the game and sometimes your game get crashed without warning and you need to restart the game few times in order to make it run.
6. The Wanzers are STIFF and PLASTICKY due the effect of Unity games and the polish effect makes the Wanzers feel Low-quality build instead of High-quality build.
7. Savefiles are mostly corrupted and even if you make multiple savefiles on the game, there will be few corrupted one and you need to remove them for good. Also, I dont reccomend save the game during battle because you will realized that so many bugs happened like I said in Point 1 and 3 which completely destroy your progress and start from the beginning once again.
8. The atmosphere of the mission getting toned down so much that I dont feel like playing Remake version but instead I play on DEMAKE version of it. The Original version is way superior than the Remake and you can feel it immediately during mission play.

In the end, the Devs who make FM1-3 Remake are INEXPERIENCED and WORSE like how Rockstar did on GTA Trilogy with GSG Devs which caused almost infinite issues presented during the launch and still bugged after so many updates to this date.

The original localization was basically AI translated gibberish, but they did update it so it’s much better now. What’s not better is the actual gameplay, because the game is still extremely buggy, prone to crashing (on PC at least) and has multiple game breaking issues including at least one known save corruption bug. It also doesn’t help that the new visuals look more like a generic Unity asset flip instead of the distinct PSX visuals of the original. It robs the game of a lot of the tone and atmosphere that makes the story of Front Mission 2 so good.

The FM2 remake was outsourced to a studio with a poor rep for quality and I've heard bad things about that version including bugs and poor localization.

it sits at a 5.6 user score, which is pretty bad for a SE release.

Man, the translators been cooking this year! FM2 was on the top of my wishlist for years. The Square Enix remake got some pretty bad reviews for supposedly using machine translation so I never tried it. I'll give this one a shot.
Updated. Now integrates hotfix #4.

The graphics in this game looks like PS4 Quality back in the days. Unlike Front Mission 3. Front Mission 5 is good when doing combo attack links. The battles in this FM2 shows wanzers driving, skiing, running. It's nice though I haven't seen stages that are not at night. I played the JP version on real hardware years back, the loading time is atrocious, this emulation is a good option so far (no lags), and it shows important battle map enemy/player positions before every battle.

Anyone else having trouble with duckstation freezing before mission 3 during saribash dialogue?

Hotfix #3
- Fixed crashes in shops when selecting certain items.
- Fixed a bug where Japanese text was displayed instead of English in DNC News.

There's a new version, could you please update the link?
I won't be able to update anything for the next 2 days or so.

Thank you for that. I used to follow their progress via their blog and I would never have suspected any of this. I remember their project leader's posts and his transmedia theory as well, which included all kinds of cameos and recurring characters.

I have no problem with some inaccuracy, it's expected in these old projects. But the fan translation having actual fanfic level stuff inserted into the narrative is kind of deal breaking for me in these story-heavy games. I hope someone reverts these changes to something more accurate in a future patch.
No problem. Remember to do your part in quashing these rewrites that have persisted for way, way too long. The only way the fanbase as a whole will stop believing the lies is by informing people.

It's historically important due to being set immediately before FM1 itself, so I'd love to play it.

I see, thank you!

The author seems to of uploaded the patch to Romhacking.net with the version, at the time of writing this being 1.0.1. Hope that helps with the versioning

where can i find the first game?
there is no translation of Front Mission 1st (PS1 version) but the SNES has a good translation. It reads better story wise, but however, the DS version includes the Front Mission 1st content since it's a port of that version as well as there is a hack to fix the battle lag. The modern remake of the first game is the better of the two I've played, but I don't recommend either of them.

To clarify, I don't recommend any of the remakes. I do recommend the DS version with the lag fix or the SNES translation by Frank Hughes with mziab's addendum.

For Front Mission 2 specifically they changed Franz to Morgan (an entirely seperate character from 5) and tried to insert Royd, Sakata, and Keith into the story. What's really funny is that the character they claim is Sakata is a generic NPC portrait used throughout the game.

For the series as a whole there's the fact that they continuously lied about a prequel manga called Front Mission Zero and a movie for Gun Hazard. Neither actually exist. Their "FRONT MISSION: AN ANALYSIS OF A TRANSMEDIA" paper is full of nonsense, like claiming that Kevin appears in the Front Mission 1st manga when it's actually Sakata.

Their old site is down but it's been archived if you want to see the the lies about Zero.

I think that with both the remake out and this extended hack almost complete, that this is probably the chance FM2 at getting a fair shake on its original console. A variable-width font would have to implemented too for the best results.

He doesn’t. The old team are sole reason that a lot of Front Mission media is accessible outside of Japan at all. This dude is just talking out of his ass.
That was my first reaction as well but this isn't even the first time I've heard this mentioned, or even the second. I know they're not bad guys because I was there when they were still active, along with everyone else who was there at the time. There was 0 drama, just pure fandom, so I'm not paying any attention to the animosity towards them, only the claim about mistranslating parts of the game, which can happen to any project.

I agree with you 100% that the Front Mission Translation Project made some amazing contributions, namely their FM5 and FM2 patches. And FM2 wasn't even in their plans originally but they still went out of their way to make it happen.
