Front-Mission-2-jpn-psx-coverart.jpg

A translation effort that builds on top of the Front Mission 5 Team's version to cover what that version could not. It is considered 90% done and fully playable from start to finish. All that seems to be left untouched as of now are certain graphical elements from the UI.

Author(s): Grand_Veterinarian68
Type: Translation
Version: 1.0
Date: 30th of June, 2026
Status: Playable
Source: https://www.reddit.com/r/frontmissi...elease_front_mission_2_translation_extension/

RB's Notes 1: If you are using Duckstation (you should), in order to preserve your sanity, tweak this particular game's settings so that the CD seek speed setting is set to maximum, otherwise, look forward to almost 8 seconds of waiting before battle animations load for every engagement.

RB's Notes 2: MTL regards only descriptions and is placeholder. Text will be either human translated or sourced from the remake going forward.

Got any examples or source on that?
For Front Mission 2 specifically they changed Franz to Morgan (an entirely seperate character from 5) and tried to insert Royd, Sakata, and Keith into the story. What's really funny is that the character they claim is Sakata is a generic NPC portrait used throughout the game.

For the series as a whole there's the fact that they continuously lied about a prequel manga called Front Mission Zero and a movie for Gun Hazard. Neither actually exist. Their "FRONT MISSION: AN ANALYSIS OF A TRANSMEDIA" paper is full of nonsense, like claiming that Kevin appears in the Front Mission 1st manga when it's actually Sakata.

Their old site is down but it's been archived if you want to see the the lies about Zero.

Using the old fantranslation as a basis is a big misstep. It was handled by a team of borderline schizos that would make up plot points and constantly lie about Front Mission media.

I recommend playing 3 first. It's the easiest and has a better story.
Also, i think the first game sucks. It's a boring slog imo. I recommend skipping 1.
I'm a completionist so im most likely going to search for it anyway
also is it in English anywhere?

my issue with FM1, is that the battles are very boring, repetitive, and devoid of strategy. If you've played ff tactics, tactics ogre, fire emblem, or Advance wars, you'll find it disappointing. You can just range every enemy in the game, and it's not like I'm some strategy guide abusing min maxer here, I just naturally ended up bullying the Ai with missiles.
I already play those game you mentioned and I will say that FM1 doesnt that bad considering that was released as the experimental due SquareSoft back then trying to make new Series instead of focusing only one series. Every Tactical RPG have their own issues too but compared to FM1, FM1 was way worse than those games you mentioned because it was the new series being introduced to new players and they dont have balancing like how FF1 introduced at that time. Only when FM2 that they have massive improvement in gameplay and other things BUT still flawed a lot until FM3 sorted it out with simpler and better mechanics.

Also, if you play as Striker or Melee oriented, you easily one-shot them by using First+Double activated compared to Speed and Switch which takes long time to kill them even with Duel effect being used. Missiles are just MEH because they are not useful on mid-late game where your pilots and wanzers have way better skills and powerful armory that makes Bosses like a newcomer who dont know how to use them properly.

Yup Missiles are far above the other setups. Some units are slightly better at melee than others but there's not much difference between units.

The later FM games add more variety to units and builds. Even then I wouldn't say strategy is exactly the strong suit of the series. It is very much a min maxing customize your robots type of series.

FM1 is not that sucks, its just a game that was being made as prototype for sequel versions. Sure they have lots of issues in term of balancing and how wanzer works but at least it was decent and had their own identity.

FM3 by far the EASIEST compared to other series while FM2 was the HARDEST one to play followed by FM5, FM4, 2089 : Border of Madness and lastly FM1. As for story, FM5 is best one because not only you see the complete journey from intro into end of the game itself.

I played FM5 way more than other series combined like 1000+ hours on both Normal and Hard difficulty, this is the main reason why it was so addicting since there is a lot more to discover than you think and the freedom you have on Wanzer Customization was the biggest reason why I like it so much.

I had heard good things about the ds remake of the mobile games, and with AI sadly getting better, we may see a quality ai translation of it.
While i would prefer someone at least proofread it lol.
I said it earlier on in the thread, but there’s an active fan translation effort going on for 2089: Border of Madness. They’ve got a discord where they keep people updated and they seem to be making good progress so far.

It's historically important due to being set immediately before FM1 itself, so I'd love to play it.

I see, thank you!

Maybe one day someone will translate the DS remake.
But judging by how cursed this series is translation wise? lol

As for canon status of alternative, it is still canon as it covers the african conflict pre FM1.
I see, thank you!

Well I haven't played Alternative (I'm not sure if it's considered canon at this point), and as good as Gun Hazard is, I also do believe it's non-canon (and IMO not quite up to to the standard of Leynos).

Now, what I'm hoping for soon is Border of Madness. I really want to play that.

I see you forgot about Alternative and Gun Hazard::eggmanlaugh

Every Front Mission game deserves to be played. 1 is still my favorite, even if 2, 3, 4 and 5 are more polished. It's basically a sequel's obligation to do as much.

FM1 has its own identity and I love it. Is it perfect? no, but it's one hell of a game.

where can i find the first game?
There’s 4 versions of it, only 2 are translated. The SNES version has a fan translation that got updated relatively recently with a lot of bug fixes. The DS version got an official localization with a different translation and a ton of bonus content, including an entire second campaign that was added in the PSX version.

I remember when the translation was first released someone said that something like 30% of the game was still untranslated because the size allowance (not the disc but however the code works) was not big enough to fit an entire english translation.
Does this version change that? Can anyone confirm that at least all story stuff has been translated?
Been waiting along time to play this. I think Front Mission looks it's best on the Ps1!
Thanks everyone!
Btw, this is my first post on these forums. Do I win anything?!

It's great to see this after so long. I was also pleased to note that the engrish map screen text seems to have been left intact.

The translation was handled by The Man, The Myth and The Legend itself, its LegaiaRules. He makes a comeback after he made so many FAQs and Guides about Front Mission series and I enjoyed it a lot because his information was so detailed that you can see what kind of enemies you fight and what kind of build you need to use against them. Without his Guide, it will be much harder to beat this game because it was not translated for so long that I dont know what to do and get destroyed so many times then Rage Quit back then.
