Forgotten Multiplayer Games that are still playable

Tribes: Aerial Assault (2002) - PlayStation2

One of the few PS2 games I've played online back in the day has a small but active community that is active (https://www.tribesaerialassault.com/) and are looking for new players.

Tribes is cool,
And its parental series: Starsiege is still playable online too

I also recommend 2005's Star Wars Battlefront 2, with Game Ranger it still works.

If you're willing to do a bit of work, you can play Resident Evil Outbreak: File 1&2 online on PCSX2! I would super recommend doing this if you can get at least one other person to play with you, it kinda sucks offline with bots. Even online is a bit janky, but we're retro gamers, we can handle it! The game can be esoteric, but once you get the hang of it, it's honestly my favorite online co-op game. I'll leave a video and a link to the server's wiki that tell you how to set the game up. I would 100% recommend that you use the optional memory card file with everything unlocked, otherwise you have to beat every scenario in offline first for it to be available online. The wiki even instructs you on how to dump your bios and legally obtained copies of the Japanese releases of both games! We're good boys and girls, we wouldn't do it any other way, right?

Schthack is dead? What about Ultima?

Also in PSU there's Clementine.
Both of those are still up but neither is as active as Ephinea. There is usually around 300+ people playing PSOBB on the weekends in the evening. The other servers have around 20-30 playing at most.

someone in this thread will eventually post a game that causes a lot of interest here and then everyone goes and plays said game together the in-game player count will be full of nothing but rgt users

but for me its microvolts. fucking loved this game not sure how the relaunch is doing though

There is actually a cool DBZ MMO i was having fun with a while ago
i need to check it out again, they were in the process of translating all the quests to English.
your character gets bigger and older as you level and you unlock better sub classes n stuff :P
and you get to fly at level 30!
but its kind of a lonely dead-ish game because its been around a while, not many people know about it & the other people you do encounter only speak Japanese so cant really help

Well of Souls. A 2D RPG that can be played online or off. The engine allows for users to make their own player skins and worlds as well- it's pretty impressive considering the time it came out, and that it was made by a pretty small team. Think it was just one or two guys that put this out.

I've been getting back into playing it, wanted to max out a character in the default world that comes with the game. Level 100 and finishing all the quests and whatnot- make child me happy before moving on to the other worlds people have whipped up. I never got far as a kid lol.

Phantasy Star Online Blue Burst is still up and running on the ephinea private servers.
I used to play Ephinea a lot. Honestly, I feel like it's the best way to play PSO online nowadays considering some of the QoL and bugfix changes they've made.

I gotta give File #2 a shot sometime. I've only ever played the first Outbreak, but I've always heard the second game improved on a lot. It's just a hard sell to my friend group, even if I offer to send over pre-configured ready to play packages. ::lol

Yeah, File #2 is better in a lot of aspects, mostly QoL improvements. But it does revamp the main cast and give them more abilities and items too. If you use the completed save file, it also unlocks all the NPCs from File #1 and the canceled File #3 for use. There's a lot of fuckin' characters. Some just suck, some are OP as hell. You can have fun with any of them, even the characters that start in Danger status. They are usable, but just a pain starting out.

I don't understand your friends though. D: They better not be pulling you into the Fortnights or Robloxs instead. >:C Friends that survive together stay together.

EverQuest Online Adventure on the PS2 has been revived, at least partially.

So have a bunch of other PS2 and PS3 games (as mentioned about about Outbreak 1&2. I really want to play .Hack Fragment online sometime, it looks like Phantasy Star Online and there aren't enough MMOs like that.

Haha they're chill, I think emulators just intimidate them a bit. Either that or it's the old game aspect. It'll happen one day, I got a friend on WoS so anything is possible! (Sometimes.)

Also no I don't Fortnite, as tempting as it is to run around as Oscar and orange justice all over people.

Fragment mentioned!

It has a sort of "early game hell" whether you play online or off. Monsters will all hit you, be a higher level than you, dodge your attacks, kill you, dance on your body etc etc.

You start at level 1, and in the offline mode all the party members you get access to at the start are a much higher level. The devs expect you to use these characters to grind a bit before jumping online, and you should, but let's be honest making your allies fight everything while you sit around and leech exp isn't fun. ?

The SIGN fanservice is neat though, I liked running around with BT and Bear.

The online mode is where it's at imo. There's definitely an aspect of preparing yourself before you go out into a field compared to how brutal this game is compared to IMOQ. Because of the lower exp curve, and the whole "levelling down when you die" thing it's important to bring buff and debuff items and actually USE them, and know when to run.

Anyway, I can ramble on about this game for a while. IMOQ and SIGN are probably my favourite eras of .hack and I don't get to talk about it enough. You should definitely try it if you're into either PSO or the aesthetic the .hack universe has, but take it in small doses. If you mainline it, the crawl will become rote by your 20th hour.

Also EQOA getting a revival is something I didn't really expect but is really cool to see. My dad was huge into that game on the PS2. I'm glad it's happening.

I'm really surprised with no one mentioning ME3's Multiplayer:

Holy shit, do I miss that. It can still be played, but that would mean giving EA my most precious resource: time. And they've really proven, over the years, that they don't deserve it one bit.

Used to be you could only play via ET: Legacy, but amazingly, it's been supported in recent years by the devs and resurrected on Steam. I recently re-discovered it and am having a blast.

Playable via FreeStyle gunz and others...Whatever client you download, just make sure to scan it first lol.

I'm really surprised with no one mentioning ME3's Multiplayer:
...That's still online? I'm legit surprised. I figured it was either nuked long ago or when the Legendary Edition came out. I had a ton of fun playing that with a friend, though the loot box style unlocks were always shit.

New World Order. It's like counter strike but instead of money, you can only get gear depending on your carry weight.
I think nobody knows about this game either.

Do multiplayer MODS count? If so, Liberty Unleashed, a multiplayer mod for GTA 3, is absolutely dead lol, most people went on to VC or San Andreas which were simply better in every aspect than 3 so it was just left there

one that really surprised me was Street Fighter 3 Online Edition on ps3, i can still regularly find people to fight... when i bother to sign in to my psn account. it is a really good version of the game, so i guess it's not that surprising, but still.

Oh this looks fantastic ::blush I love early MMOs that just let you make your own character from scratch, sprites and all. You can tell that a lot of these titles were born from the MUDs and roleplay chatrooms of the 90s, before cosmetic items that you have to pay for became the standard.

Well of Souls reminds me a bit of Furcadia, a 1996 furry MMORPG (more of a graphical roleplay server than anything) that's still kicking today. Everything's player generated, from items to characters to the maps you explore. Not sure if it remains active but the servers are still up regardless.
