I was just thinking about this...
Before RWBY got incredibly stupid - and it wasn't fucking Shakespeare to begin with -, the main point of the series was that negative emotions attracted the Grimm (nightmarish monsters that would maul and main you for fun), hence the need to train kids to become Hunters and Huntresses to fight them off and kill them.
There truly was something there, but it got shoved to the side when the writers decided to tackle twelve half-baked allegories at once.
But even before that shitshow, I thought that the Grimm idea could have been done better...
I mean, what if people were either taught to suppress negative emotions until they cracked (thus making the problem a whole lot worse when it inevitably backfired), or have the entire population secretly drugged to keep them calmed like in Quarantine (excellent game, by the way).
That would be much more interesting (IMO) and would also give future villains something real to rebel against instead of trying to topple the government because... reasons.
This would also work because the show desperately tries to humanize them at every turn anyway.
The more I think about it, the more sense it makes.
