Dreamcast Finally bought a Dreamcast!

(*me remember I start this flames about prices*)
Ah....well...ah let's don't talk about price anymore.

I really miss playing Marvel vs Capcom 2 on my Dreamcast. Crazy Taxi is also a fun one, even if I'm not really a car fan. Resident Evil Code Veronica, Soul Calibur, Dead or Alive, Skies of Arcadia, Capcom vs SNK 2, Space Channel 5. Phantasy Star Online actually got a solid single-player story if you don't mind solo-ing an RPG.
As much as I enjoyed Shenmue 1 and 2, I'm cautious to recommend them because I have the feeling that they might not have aged so graciously like some other titles (see Shenmue 3). If you can burn a CD or watch a gameplay video you might make a more informed decision.

Space Channel 5 - A brilliant rhythm game. I may love Vib Ribbon, but I’m not typically a rhythm gamer. Space Channel 5 kicks my butt, but I still love and recommend it. Preferably the physical version, because it is GORGEOUS (foil packaging, lenticular cover UGH😩)
i am glad to see people continue to appreciate the cover art work for space channel 5 as it is one of my most loved game covers
i remember seeing it for what translates to four united states dollars and i immediately got it

just look at that shimmer (it is so shining and bright my own shadow is adding details to her face)

I paid $50 for my copy….
It was for a U.S. copy. The U.S. cover has a lenticular cover with a character profile for Ulala on the back, and then the manual which itself has reflective silver on it, so it’s still a looker even without the cover piece!

DUDE!
YAS!

You're in for a good time.

There's already so many great suggestions for games on this thread and there's a ton more all over the forum (search 'Dreamcast").

My recommendation, like a few others have said, is if you want the thing to last grab a disc drive emulator. At this rate, the drive may take a dump on you at any time so it's worth at least shopping around for what you might need now.
There's a lot of great options but prices vary and may continue to for a bit, so keep your eyes peeled.

Let us know what you en up playing!

Dreamcast is not my favorite SEGA console. I have beef with it in some regards. But I could NEVER disrespect that library and those vibes. This console is DRENCHED in its own energy, and the games that are from it which got ported elsewhere just feel RIGHT on it. There’s so much to play, so many great games, and while it lacks the discoverability of other systems because its library in the west was so small and so quality that most great games are already well known and frequently recommended… I mean, yeah. Its library is nearly ALL HITS. This console was literally built different. The quality is so CONSISTENTLY HIGH that it’s insane.

OMEDETOU!

The dream never ended, it just took a break

Gotta put Grandia II and Marvel Vs Capcom as soon as you get the chance

This is the best commercial. I love the idea of, whenever it’s brought up, that all these games we play on consoles are actually living inside the console. It’s very Toy Story-esque.

Same thing goes for this incredible art piece.

My bf took me to the mall for our anniversary, and i found these at the game shop! Dream passport 2 was $8.15. I know it won't work given i have an american Dreamcast but a cool thing to find regardless! I love more obscure titles/software

I really REALLY recommend getting a codebreaker disc downloaded.
Here’s the link. Burning them may take some doing, but please do it. You’ll unlock the power of your Dreamcast in ways you never thought possible.

phantasy star online is one of my favourite games
beauty and majesty in the love of others
i am curious as to how your experience with the game will be given that on dreamcast i believe it is very difficult to play on private servers directly from the console
i have all of the dream passport releases!

i think that is a very reasonable opinion - i has not used an original model cheeseburger or playstation 3 in a very long time, but i think that the dreamcast even then may be the loudest video game console i have ever owned
but i only minded that for a short time, the dreamzors whirring and clicking has been like music to me for a long time now

Dreamcast is one of my favorite consoles.

That's my holy trinity.

Aahhaha yeah, it's so true! But I love the DC loud noises. I think it's charming. "just hear how hard it is working!"

It's actually pretty easy to play PSO in private servers in a real Dreamcast. Schtserv got a boot disc, Ragol.org have its own DC ISO, Sylverant got a patcher, etc. Just pick a server, follow the instructions and have fun!

Never…NEVER underestimate the dedication and love of the PSO community. I find it disgusting that so few people even know what the game is, let alone how amazing its community is. It’s not my game, but it has a very similar vibe to the Virtua Fighter community, which I AM a part of. Just this niche little world of people who will do anything and everything to keep the game they love alive, mostly older folks, and very inviting to newcomers and returning players.

I legitimately love the use of patterns on this image. It may be a BIT overdone, which gives it a very amateur feel, but it’s a total vibe and I personally mess with it and the dreamy expression on their face. It says so much and I desperately want context to what this image is about because there’s clearly a story here.

Here is an image of all the North American launch games on Dreamcast, assembled into the iconic spiral. I think Virtua Fighter 3 TB is missing, but I understand that wasn’t a launch game. I also am shocked to find out that Sega Bass Fishing wasn’t a launch game. It came out less than a month later, which is when more titles came in as well, and I think that was a good move. I’ve made a whole thread about my love of SEGA Bass Fishing.

I’m playing Chu Chu Rocket with the family. I don’t have three controllers, so I had to play on a fishing rod. They’re now playing the puzzle mode. They love this game and I’m so proud. They never played a Dreamcast before this day, nearly thirty years after its launch.

It’s this kind of moment which is why gaming matters to me.

That thing SCREAMS at you. That’s why I hate using bootlegs or burned discs in the thing, it sounds SO MUCH WORSE when you put those in it.

Dreamcast is the only console I’ve ever considered an ODE solution for. That’s all I’ll say.
The whistle is from the VMUs. The more you have plugged in, the more it whistles. HOWEVER you can turn the option off on the VMUs. I consider it part of the experience. My cousin had Dreamcast before i did and those fan sounds take me back every time. ^_^

Is this console still available for purchase ?
If you count resellers, old stock, retro game stores, and other such things, yes!

Not at all Walmart, no. It’s an older system (1998 to be exact) so go where retro systems are sold and have a good time!

Some games that are worth playing around the $30 - $40 price range:
- Shenmue
- Crazy Taxi
- SEGA Marine Fishing
- Chu Chu Rocket
- Star Wars Episode 1 Racer
- Virtua Tennis

That’s looking at my own collection. There’s several games that are amazing through the entire library that range in price, and that’s not even getting into ODE’s and emulation and such.

virtua tennis is a wonderful underrated game
a very strong example of a game that is intuitive and simple to understand for a beginning, but has a depth to the mechanics that may surprise some
