Final Fantasy XIV Thread

This explanation makes the most sense to me. I was in a really bad place health wise during Shadowbringers which is when G'raha got reintroduced to the crew, plus i started skipping the story after Stormblood 4.0 msq anyway; I barely remember any of the story from SB and SHB (and by barely i mean like maybe 1% max)

That makes sense too, I'm a woman and i also have my waifu (y'shtola). but im pretty sure most ppl actually like G'raha cuz of the emotional bits in the story with him. that's why i like Haurchefant so much, i actually stopped paying attention after HW wrapped up in 3.3.

Heavensward Spoilers:
I have a headcannon for my character that fits into me skipping like all the cutscenes after HW. My headcannon is that after Haurchefant sacrificed himself for her, all she wants to do is kill and fight because it's the only way to take her mind off of the trauma of losing her best friend. Otherwise, when she's not fighting, she's either dissociating or being a degen LMAO
Haurchefant was a true bro. I really liked him, too.

FFXIV has some truly excellent FF characters, but it simultaneously features some of the worst and weakest the series have ever seen.
This one takes the cake for me as probably one of the least likable FF character ever:

BUT ENOUGH OF ME BEING A DEBBIE DOWNER! Here’s one of my ACTUAL favorites from very recent in the game’s life:

Also, as someone who played FFXIV for 9 years 2 months and 8 days straight; i loved this game to bits. it was there when i needed it to be for me, but now its more of a hindrance to my life.

that said, i DO love this game, and it will forever have the warmest place in my heart. i met most of the people who i still talk today from FFXIV.

I wouldnt have made this thread if I didn't love the game nodders
(a bit late of a reply from me)

Oh yeah no, games are meant to be fun. If its feeling like a hindrance taking that step back is really good.

On another note, I enjoy the small touches that acknowledge what you've done or the grand company ranks

i only play the game to gpose and keep my houses. 5.x patches were boring and Yawntrail made me sleepy. but i also have like 8000 hours in the game. it was bound to wear out its welcome for me~

Been playing since the original release! I was even able to play the beta test for a bit when it was still on PS3. I play off on, but mostly during the summer when I have more time, I'm SAM main on Excalibur server, I just cleared Heavensward and started the into the Stormblood areas.

The first friend I had ask me to get into FFXIV was on Excalibur!

I played on Coeurl for the majority of the time I played. I transfered to Balmung during my last month xD

im hella new and im waitng until i find friends who love final fantasy to play with
final fantasy is my favourite series but i do not play ffxiv and know very little about it in spite of playing the base game and heavensward, i was heavily medicated at the time so really i do not remember much of anything during those times
here is a dubsteb terra. it plays when you are on a magitek mount in final fantasy xiv too

NOW I NEED THAT MOUNT
THANKS FOR SHARING !

I accidentally let my subscription renew so I guess I should play again...I had gotten really bored of the MSQ to be honest. I know it gets better, but after I became a paladin somehow I just fell off and started playing Dragon's Dogma again lol.

im not currently subscribe but when i am i will make a post about it , im in the jonva server and im a white mage .

I never played any MMORPG but during COVID I Spent too much time for this game. I joined patch before ARR flying unlocked and totally I was into it. The most important for me was a Story and one of the best Villains in FF series. I joined some FC and found many friends ig but some time after Endwalker when everything got back to norm everyone parted their ways it was amazing experience but sadly I dont think this will ever return cause FFXIV will not repeat the success of COVID player exodus. And story in Dawntrail sucks. It's kinda is like Marvel or many things after one big event in story takes place and they have to to continue story onward. I think FFXIV would be over after Endwalker and the game would come to maintenance mode but COVID success made Square force CBU to dig in this game rather than make new MMO FF on new engine and tech.

i played it for about a year straight from heavensward to endwalker and kinda burned myself on it so im taking a break. i'm a little demoralized to continue playing because the process was a little lonely (even if a friend on discord invited me to their FC) and dawntrail has a mixed reception.

I was addicted during the pandemic but I eventually found it's a boring experience alone. Not being able to explore the world and do the main quest with friends got so annoying at a point; like the most essential thing for an MMO. "Oh you haven't unlocked X Dungone or Y Raid??" you need to sit through cutscenes.

And I wanted to pay attention, but it's such a time sink to listen to Alphinaud lol, I love the world, theme and story to a certain point but the entire design philosophy of this game is frankly a disaster, and adding NPC party to dungeons is like, why even make it online anymore?

I was in an RP server because I thought RP would be like role playing, people being into the world and lore and boy I did not expect a sex chat and weirdos typing walls of text.

I fucking hate Tanks in MMOs, I fucking hate Tanks in MMOs, especially in FF14. They just rush everything, like some of us wants to take it slow and enjoy what we are fucking playing or seeing. I just have to catch up to this dumbass and spam AoE; MMO design is fucking garbage thanks to these people. Had to switch to Warrior and take it slow, have some respect and ask if people want to rush.

I mainly stayed with Black Mage and White Mage. I let Tanks die if they rush and are assholes; some classes are not meant for that play style.

It sounds like u just don't gel well with the play style of 14.

If I got u as a tank in my expert I woulda left the dungeon LOL. I liked to be in an out of there in 10-15 minutes, and single pulls are so lame for that.

Also I wonder if u ever came across good warriors while in an expert dungeon. They literally don't need healers at all so they wouldn't have died even if u were ignoring them on purpose xD

nah, I invested a lot of time into it; I just don't find that particular aspect "better" or "fun"; plenty of people have asked me too when doing the dungeon for the first time.

Sorry in advance for the wall of text, it just sort of happened ::thank-you

Idk if this was @moonbits point, but I agree with the point of rushing stuff being anti-fun. I'm in the camp of "it shouldn't feel like that because it sucks in general", meaning that I think the game suffers because dungeons aren't meaningful content, and that it sort of fostered a mentality around certain content that people don't want to do it, they just want it done (and also to the stereotype that FFXIV players don't like playing the game lol).

Wall-to-wall tactics aren't boring because they're fast, they're boring because it doesn't feel like you're playing the game, and many MMO players like doing dungeons because it's a cool experience. FFXIV only ever had "hard dungeons" as a design point in ARR, so it's somewhat a relic to be in that mindset. I think they'd benefit greatly from a Heroic or even Mythic like approach, and to not tie every single dungeon to story content. Fighting monsters for cool rewards shouldn't be braindead, it should be engaging and fun.
I know they're actively trying to bridge the gap more than before, but it still feels like casual and hardcore PvE content is too divorced from each other (I've seen the term midcore tossed around but I don't really know what it means), though Dawntrail had some new and fun chaotic envounter designs in both dungeons and normal-tier trials/raids which was a fun toss-up compared to years and years of "remember to not stand here when attack happens".

But I don't have any ideas for a solution or anything, I just know I don't like how it's presented to me currently.

FFXIV gameplay hasnt been truly fulfilling for me since HW

Its why I stopped playing earlier this year.

Duty Roulette is such a nice idea on paper.. because all we get are zealots that want to rush through the content "because it's boring" and all of us, new players are just lost. The best experience I've had with FF14 was when all of us were new to a dungeon, learning it's mechanics and puzzles.

I don't rush and don't pull everything, I team up with the healer and see how much he'd like to deal with, we are a team after all.

I think this is probably where it gets tough for MMOs in general

The best times I've ever had during FFXIV were during content launches when nobody knew wtf was happening and we were all figuring it out. After almost 10 years of doing that, yeah it gets to be mundane.

I think their whole system is flawed. The roulettes are needed for tomes to buy end game gear, which forces older players to play with new ones. It's good for keeping that older content alive, but for those of us who've been doing it for years and years and years and years, it's mundane.

I sorely miss Heavensward. Back then there was less content and the community was much more tight knit. There was no cross-world, no cross-data center. Everyone knew each other. Jobs had their own identities and depth to them. There was a true sense of accomplishment from playing the game.

Now everything is being made to "please everyone" and the divide between casuals and raiders is too high.

This a thousand percent. It also made more sense when the game was younger, and doubly so when not every dungeon was part of the main story, which made them feel more spontaneous and just "go into a dangerous place to kill monsters and get treasure".

I don't want to come off as nothing but a hater or whatever, I'm just bored with the game (I never did any hardcore stuff but I never do) and it's fun to talk about stuff we want changed because one wants it to be good. It seems to have operated under a "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" mentality for a long time, and now criticisms have finally caught up with their pipeline, and many players seem to be bored with the standard fare now. I was really disappointed with how criterion dungeons awarded nothing but cosmetics, because I initially hoped we would get a new way of gearing, and the new ways of gearing we do get still just boil down to tomestones in the end.

I don't know about you guys, but I think it's boring when the monsters don't actually drop treasure (outside of dungeons and Alliance Raids, which are my favorite content), and instead just give us tokens or currency to purchase said gear.
I know it's how the game's been desgined from the beginning or anything, and I hate to be the one to bring up WoW as a comparison, but I'd like to think that they could take some cues from WoW again, like how they originally did with Tomestones, but that concept has been sunset in WoW for probably a decade now.

Are there any other old heads here (ARR/HW babies)? What do y'all think of the direction the the game is headed in now?

That's me I guess!

I think in general toxic postivity of the great community btw, Yoshi being checked out, the A listers working on other games and Square treating XIV like a source of revenue has lead it down a negative path. I feel like the systems that surround the MSQ, quests and so, are quite dated. It needs some serious love. And I really wish they would stop dumbing down the jobs. Checking back to see what they've done is honestly just painful. It's more criticism than I could ever possibly sum up in one post. I'm personally waiting to see what happens next expansion, if they start taking serious steps to fix issues with the game I'll come back.

LucyPyre's video is quite a good summary, there's definitely more that needs to be said that she didn't touch on but her criticism of the game is pretty good.

Discuss FFXIV shenanigans here

FFXIV was my main game from the beginning of 2016 all the way until March of this year. I don't play anymore, but I really do appreciate FFXIV and the friends that I made from it.

Are there any other old heads here (ARR/HW babies)? What do y'all think of the direction the the game is headed in now? What are your cutest glams? 😄

I never played, but my ex-girlfriend used to play a lot ::nervous-prinny
