Final Fantasy Thread

Yeah so much wasted potential , just if they got each character an arc would have made things better firion the protagonist is the most forgettable protagonist of a ff game he has nothing going on for him only a cool looking outfit and pretty cool artwork the only thing he got is "I want to fight the empire" like cool bro but didn't you say your parents died or smth why not show us the characters grieving and missing their parents , Gordon is like the only one who had somewhat of an arc going from low self esteem dude to leader of the rebel army and the rebel army....we never see them in combat all they do stand there unfazed while you do all the work the devs didn't even bother to make a fight scene in fynn when the rebel army attacked like damn how just how can you mess up this badly I would be understanding if this was how it was in 1988 but they no longer in that era they have the technology to make ff2 a game with proper story it got the Tools for it the world is pretty dark compared to lets say ff1 and ff5.

Heard a statement once that said final fantasy only got good at its 4th installment having played the first 2 games I can see a bit of a point into this statement but to really see if its true I have to get ff3 the original version or any non 3d version that isn't well pixel remaster anyone know where to get it? Since its the first iteration ever of job system which was pretty decent in ff5 when I first saw the job system I thought you will pick a job and work and such the word "job" must have been replaced with class its way more fitting.
This is a really bad take honestly.
FF 1-3 are all fine games hell l like 3 more then 4 because of how boring 4 is to play.

I respectfully disagree ff4 is pretty fast paced compared to 1 & 5 the levelling is much smoother and each character has unique skills not an exact substitute for job system but its good.

FF1 is an alright game

FF2 is underwhelming

This game is literally exactly what you're requesting.
I think it's awful, but if you want to play a weird take on FF1 with actual "characters" and lots of focus on Garland (I really can't say more without spoiling the whole thing), this is the one:

Enjoy! I think the Pixel Remaster is the best version of FF1 (would've been PSP if it had the old-school magic system!)
I love Stranger of Paradise, probably the best Final Fantasy game since 12; it's also a much better action game than XVI

early nes/famicom games have an average size of 30-60 kb. that includes game engine, sprites, music data and text. later games could get bigger, but only unofficial games ever got to or past 1mb in size.
that is not a lot of space to work with, and games in those days had short development cycles. six months was about the average. 3-4 months was more common.

Exactly. Complaining about retro games being limited is kind of weird. That's the best that could realistically be done in that era.

You can party up with your friends and do some quests. Like Leveletes (which are just basic fetch or kill quests) and FATEs. You can't however, play the main story with your friends. So, if you want to do dungeons or raids, you have to unparty, and your friend has to go through the story alone; and unlock the dungeons, which you can do together.

So the game basically works like a single player game, but the dungeons and raids are co-op.

What do you mean by this exactly? You don't have to unparty with your friends while they unlock dungeons or raids or anything.

I understand the limits of that era its acceptable at that time.

But we are no longer in that era they have more space to work with and better technology and everything yet square decides to keep the early games as close as they were in 87/88 not making use of increased size limit and such features that are possible now they could make it better but again decides to not improve story for some unexplainable reason.

the people who originally worked on those games are most likely not there anymore. and i doubt the company keeps any documents, notes or sketches from back then. i'm fairly certain that is the main reason capcom can't make a legends 3 game.
now, that's not a major concern, you can remake a game and add stuff in. ff4 ds did that. new story stuff was added in during the last part of the story.
you do need someone who's good at storytelling to work on the story; and someone to keep an eye on them so they don't go overboard with it. there is a novelization of ff2 in japan, it could help serve as a template or supplementary material if need be.
their could be a cultural reason for the decision not to alter or improve the story. i learned from reading some comments on a youtube video that nintendo is the it is because of the scarcity mindset. they keeping taking sites down with their games because if people have free access to the games, they will never buy a rerelease of the old games.
kind of hilarious in my opinion, i got metroid dread from playing metroid fusion on my psp. i liked how it played and the story, so hearing that a new game was coming out in the 2d style like that game made me get it.

But then it would be a different game altogether.

indeed. a little bit of stuff wouldn't hurt, a few scenes while the characters are traveling and talk about stuff wouldn't hurt; ff4 has thought bubbles for the overworld character to have that shows off some thoughts that the character is having about current events.
ff2 was made in just under a year; coming out a day beforeff1's first anniversary. the story is barebones due to that and space restrictions.
add too much stuff to the story and it essentially becomes a new one. might as well make a new game at that point.
at this point, it's just square enix archiving the early games and making some profit off of them with some quality of life improvements.

it hardly limits you. speaking as a final fantasy game its a completely serviceable "trial" as it allows you to go through the main story which is the appeal anyways. its meant to be for the singleplayer ff fans that dont have any interest in multiplayer games and mmos, most of the limitations are just traditional mmo stuff

But then it would be a different game altogether.
Not really ? The gameplay is still the same adding more scenes and exploring characters more won't change ff2 into something else its for the good of the game really....the game is not received very well I heard its callled a black sheep among the fans I doubt anyone would oppose having the emperor appearing more in the game or having maria and her brother leon story plays differently where its more of back and forth until he breaks free from the emperor control he is one scene our enemy and the next one he is one of team like nothing happened LOL peak storytelling.

Cid , and Joseph deaths and mindu death doesn't hit as much you don't spend much time with them to feel attached to them they could work on making the parts with these characters more lengthy , im fine without romance but it won't hurt if we see gordon and hilda getting along maybe gordon comforts the princess after her father death and scotts too , maybe add something between firion and maria give Gus his own character arc that explores the character more he already has the ability to speak to animals expand upon that would be hella cool , give gareth the only character along with gordon to have be interesting give him some arc too maybe he feels guilty that he wasn't with his brethren when the empire decimated the dragoons explore his background more and such.

Same goes for leila I mean she does something cool when she barges into princess hilda room to save your butt from getting killed but like that's really it where did she come from? Does she have ties to the empire? Etc etc etc...

Also can I mention how the game constantly strips you of your equipment? When gordon leaves the party you don't get the items you gave him back same case with gareth leila (WHERE IS MY TRIDENT GORDON?).

These are just few ideas I came up with right now.

Sorry, I thought you were talking about FF1, my mistake.
I guess I just disagree, but I don't think you're wrong or anything. I just don't care about updating stories for old games in that way, and I don't think simplistic stories in older games hurt them really, I suppose :)

FF1 for PS1 looks much better than the pixel remaster or any other release. it has nice dark graphics

Im fine with ff1 being the way it is but making warriors of light speak would be appreciated just few lines won't hurt really and change these lines according to the character class black mages can be arrogant , white mages humble , thieves can be rash and bring too much attention to themselves etc also making princess sarah react to what you do in the world would be cool as heck as she is featured in the iconic artwork of the game more dialogue and interactions with characters would make them more memorable like everyone commenting on your airship things like that would make the game world far more engaging.

the battle mechanics are the main punching bag for the hate. it's a good idea, just not well executed. quest 64 follows a similar path but gives every stat an experience bar, which makes it easier to see if a stat is getting enough to level up. it is very random even in the psp version.

Totally agree. It used to be my go-to before Pixel Remaster, but I haven't replayed any version since that one released.

Yeah the system isn't that bad it could use some modernizing.

And making the emperor hard to kill cuz with mesrueme? The blade you get in castle pandemonium I 4 shotted the emperor with level 3-4 berserk most underwhelming final boss ever.

i hardly ever used stat buffs. i was under the impression that they did nothing.
but that was because my first final fantasy game was ff4 for the psx. the hard version.
i just had my characters attack with whatever was the strongest move that they could do.

So does protect not work in ff4 on the ps1? Guess I wasting my time trying to get rosa to cast it on the whole party then?

i think it works, it might just have low accuracy or something. it works in other versions and other final fantasy games.
younger me would just tell you "FUCK NO! summon bahamut, spam jump and heal like crazy!"
ff4 had 2 versions in japan. easy type, which is our ff2 for the snes, and hard type, which is the psx version.
i would listen to younger me for playing ff4; or try out a rule set that i came up with for when i finally did beat that version.

I think you mean the final fantasy chronicles version idk I beaten it by removing the essence of life in the final zone before zermus room it housed dragons and behmoths who give very decent XP got to level 68 and could hardly beat zermus I won at 38 health the rest of the party all down in the end just me cecil XD was such an exciting moment.

yeah, that's the one. i could never be bothered to go from level 45 to 60 to beat the game. it was too much grinding for me when i was younger. i'd get to lvl 50 and lose interest. i managed it a few years ago by strictly following a rule set after cecil becomes a paladin. it worked, only had to gain a few levels for the final dungeon. it took longer overall, but it wasn't too bad with breaks here and there.
