Final Fantasy Thread

Type-0's intro is so sad...
I've read the prequel manga, Ice Reaper, and liked it a lot. Can't wait to start this.

I think it's the last Final Fantasy game made that has a world map? Anyway, HYPED!

I disagree. If you look at the Nintendo Power article, they tried to sell it as the starting point for the next Final Fantasy game on the N64. Of course, Nintendo Power is a marketing magazine for Nintendo, so they aren't exactly objective but it wasn't outlandish to make that claim based on the information at the time.
That's nice and all, but we're also discussing Nintendo Power, a magazine that's been out of print for over a decade, and an article published therein almost three decades ago. The truth about this particular tech demo and it's existence in general has been common knowledge on the internet for an extremely long time.

There is nothing about this that merits a news article on a site, and it certainly doesn't merit a clickbait headline that's known to be completely incorrect. Would it merit a wikipedia page on an FF and/or Nintendo wiki somewhere? Sure. But this ain't news, and trying to make it news by muddying the waters with a sensationalist headline that we all know isn't true is scumminess of the highest order.

Square wasn't really committed to a platform at that point, they just recently finished FF6 and they were experimenting with the Sillicon Station and showed off their work at SIGGRAPH. Given Square made FF for Nintendo it was an easy hype machine to push it as a N64 FF.

now imagine Yoshinori Kitase, Hisashi Suzuki and Hironobu Sakaguchi inviting the president of Nintendo to casually... after a few drinks.. tell him that FF7 will be a Playstation exclusive.

Oh I hope you like it! I bounced off Type-0 ages ago when it had its PS4 release in the states, but I've always wanted to go back and give it another shot.

I'm currently doing that with Final Fantasy VIII. I'm somewhere in Disc One of the Remaster, and liking it much more than I did the first time I tried it.

Reminds me of their other gacha, FF7 The First Soldier. I don't hate this because I actually have fun with their mobile games, but I strongly dislike this, because eventually it's going to poof and disappear like so many of the others. Ugh.

Nothing special but recently I finished achievement hunting FF1 PR. I'm going to move onto FF2 PR soon.

Even worse how they killed their only good mobile game (Opera Omnia) to make this garbo looking thing.
Opera Omnia wasn't the only good one. They also killed Nier ReIncarnation, Brave Exvius and War of the Visions. Those games kicked ass. And before those we lost All The Bravest, First Soldier and many others. I really wish Square would make multiple Mobile Collections so we can play these games again.

Ah true, I was only talking about Final Fantasy games so I can't speak for stuff like the Nier game as I haven't played any of them, but Opera Omnia was the only one I ever enjoyed, but it was also like the best mobile-only game I ever played, so even then I'm like super biased haha
I had a super powerful Wakka I had enhanced like crazy, and I never even spent a dime on the game!

All The Bravest was probably one of the worst games I've ever played, though... ::sailor-embarrassed

I liked Final Fantasy Dimensions.
It was a bit of a nostalgia bait but if you like the 8 and 16 bit Final Fantasies then its more of that.

I now present to all of you FF fans... my "real world" timeline!

FF Unlimited > FF Lost Stranger > FF Dissidia Duellum > FF The Spirits Within

Unlimited and Lost Stranger both start off in Japan, and Spirits Within takes place on Earth far into the future. That's all I've got for now.

Edit- Ah, almost forgot that FF Tactics Advance 1 and 2 are like an isekai type of thing, but outside of a reference to a video game called Final Fantasy at the start of Advance 1, I'm not 100% sure they take place in the "real world".

Edit 2- The new Dissidia game takes place in Japan, so might as well throw that in there.

the first three could work like that. they also could all take place at the same time. but spirits within is its own thing. it really has nothing to do with final fantasy, outside of 3 small references.
the tactics advance games primarily take place in Ivalice, which is the world that ff12 takes place in. the grimoire that marche and luso find is a powerful spellbook that can rip open the fabric of time and space.

i think the two tactics advance games would go before lost stranger, either before or after unlimited

it's possible. i haven't watched the tv show yet, i don't know anything about the stranger one and i presume since the dissidia is the newest one, it takes place around this time period.
the most likely timeline is the release date of each series.
ff unlimited came out oct 2001.
tactics advance came out feb 2003.
tactics advance 2 came out oct 2007
and lost stranger came out july 2017.
dissidia deullum will be set in 2026, since it will release next year.
this is presuming that they take place after each other. it's possible unlimited and tactics advance start at the same time and then the others come afterwards.
its also possible that these series follow the mainline games and pretty much all occur at the same time completely independent of each other or happen thousands of years apart.

I got VII Rebirth at day one but that game honestly keeps repelling me for some reasons. Every time I want to play and make progresses I just stop after some cutscene.
It may be for the direction this Remake trilogy, it may be for how sick I am from seeing only FFVIIR as the only Final Fantasy rappresentative in socials.
I'm also very disgusted that Before Crisis and First Soldier (with the added additional plot) avaiable contents are exclusive to an already dead gacha.

And yet I don't have issues to play once in a while Crisis Core Reunion. Probably because that game slaps and I have amazing memories from the PSP og.
I really wish they could release FFVIIR3 asap so we can finally be done with that mainline game and moving on to new potential projects...even if the current Square Enix management is worrisome.

Oh, well, at least I'm glad that for this year I beat other FF, like Heavensward, Mystic Quest, Final Bar Line and XVI.

I cosplayed Locke an damn, gotta say that's really an amazing Celes cosplay.

yeah mystic quest mention

also i was wondering, is final bar line any good? is it worth buying?

It's fanservice done very well, so yes. My only disappointment was that the FFXVI DLC didn't included its characters at all. The real objective bad thing is obviously how the DLCs are managed, between the Premium Digital Deluxe stuff and 3 Season Passes...but if you love FF and Square Enix videogame history, you won't be disappointed. I was surprised they put Live A Live, SaGa, Xenogears, TWEWY etc.

technically, you would need all 3 games if you want the complete experience, since they don't include all of the music tracks in each game. i don't know why they did this, but despite the game seeming like it is the most content full installment of the sub series, it is not.
i played the demo on the switch. it plays like the first two; just with a bit more stuff in it. no touchscreen support for it though.
