Final Fantasy Thread

FF2 is genuinely good (at least the dawn of souls version which is the version I played). And while I understand the people who say it is the worse mainline FF game, I also still disagree and would say they clearly havent played FF3, but thats about FF3 not FF2. The game tried out a lot of different things and was very experimental, some stuff hit and has stuck with the series to this very day. Other stuff didn't.

Overall I'd say FF2 is misunderstood. I hear the SaGa games are inspired by it so I might try out one of those at some point

i've played both. 2 has a better story, game mechanics are on par with each other. the rabtoons video on ff3 is the best part of ff3.

ff2's plot is pretty wacky in a real entertaining way, yeah. always felt like the 'wauauuurgugh i have to equip 30000 pounds of armor and get hit by a slime for seventeen hours to even survive' sentiment was overblown.

it kind of is. i checked out the nes version a few years ago, and it had a set up like quest 64, where the individual stats had exp bars, so you could see how close a stat was to leveling up, so you would have an idea of when it levels up. that's not present in any other version. and the later versions are far more random with stat boosts. you can fight 3 singular goblins and get 4 stats upgraded, even for characters who didn't get a turn; but spend 20 minutes stat grinding and get one boost for one character.
the stats are supposed to increase more with stronger enemies, but there is nothing to stop players from powering up at the starting town for 10 hours. the nes and psx versions also had a mechanic where stats would weaken if not powered up after a certain amount of time. this was removed in the gba and psp versions.

I only like the pixel remaster of ff2 as it gets rid of the tedium.
this theme really suits the story as well.
I got rid of the tedium by removing all my characters’ equipment and boom! No grinding for levels or money!

Dunno mate, FFXV allowed me to buy soundtracks of the rest of the series to play as I rolled in my awesome whip. And did I sacrifice 1 slot for the mp3 player? Yes, yes I did.
I liked listening to Balamb Garden theme on repeat driving around pretending I was playing a good game

Also I played XV on the base PS4 and the load times were so bad it was legit faster just to drive some places than fast travel

I don't hate FF2 problem is the game drops the ball on every big plot point the game story was building up some epic stuff then drops it immediately after , you hatch a wind drake egg? Oh guess what? You can't ride it and can only use it twice throughout the game..... Seriously square? Why not give us a dragon to ride around the map with?? The emperor design is rather awesome but ends up being too easy to kill and an underwhelming villain i mean without the PS1 FMV you see him 3 times throughout the game.

The game could have been way more but characters don't speak much leaving them not so memroable the deaths are supposed to be sad but don't hit hard like any other FF game character death cuz there is no attachment to FF2 characters you have too little time and have 0 interactions.

Too bad really cuz the game has some more dark and tragic elements to it than other games this is portrayed even better with the FMV sadly the entire FMV is better than the game itself and that tells a lot , yet it seems square aren't so satisfied with how FF2 turned out so you see lots of FF2 refrences in FF9 and freya story being similair to Gareth one both are away from home when it gets destroyed freya breaks down but Gareth is basically 🗿

Its so much of a letdown story wise what could have been an epic saga fighting a very powerful empire and slowly dismantling it at the cost of many comrades but the game fails at delivering that.... Gameplay wise i have not much of a problem save for an issue that locks you with equipment you already use cuz if you switch spell/equipment your performance goes down to 0

I did however like the small detail of using too much brute force makes the character loss intelligence and using lots of spells creates the opposite effect , square tackled the gameplay a lot but left the story how it is which is a shame

Thats why a remake would be great for FF2

FF2 story was whatever but man I adored the gameplay. It made me realize that I ought to go try out the SaGa games and boy oh boy was I not disappointed. SaGa Frontier has become one of my favorites and I likely would have never bothered with it had I not had so much fun with FF2. Like I said though, I honestly don;t remember any of the story lol

Yeah that's the sad part gameplay has potential and a good story would make FF2 be among the best FF games many games with the number 2 in their name always overshadow the first installment , red alert 2 comes to mind along with red dead redemption 2 and resident evil 2 also WarCraft 2 and age of empires 2 so quite a shame FF2 ends up like that i swear square is sleeping on a gold mine....

That feeling when the string instrument kicks in
a close up of a man with a bandage on his nose

it seriously hits different after having played the game. Its Like Firion, Maria, and Guy's emotions on all the friends and comrades they lost along the way put in a way no words could ever describe

Man, Zozo is one of the coziest areas in the entire franchise. Top 5 for sure

Hey!
Update on me, i dropped the game almost instantly. I didnt like the game personally, maybe final fantasy isnt for me.

Oh sorry to hear that. Thanks for giving the series a shot anyways.

If you dont mind me asking: what made you drop it? (and also what version were you playing?)

anyone consider the bravely default series as being a final fantasy spin off? i certainly think so, considering it started as a sequel to a final fantasy game, and even has a lot of the same or similar items

I as a gamer totally despise when people use Final Fantasy as an innuendo.

Just needed to get that out of my system.
I'll see myself out.
