Final Fantasy Thread

Ah, shit, and the 1000th was off-topic, now I feel like an ass!

On topic, um.....FF13 is basically a dramatic misfire, with a scenario that's long on lore but short on character development and interesting dialogue. That said, the combat has a surprisingly engaging rhythm once you get access to all the options available. (That is *very* late in the game though, all things considered).
no, it was completely on topic.
ff13 was pretty much made to be an interactive movie; and it failed.
Tremors is a movie made about 30 years prior and it is a fantastic movie.
most characters in 13 are bland; everyone in tremors is memorable.
character development in 13 is garbage, it's perfect in tremors.
square enix seems like they want to make movies nowadays, seeing how 15 was handled and 13 plays itself; why not compare it to an actual movie?
see, completely on topic.

Why not hire Bacon while at it? On that sad note Square really did wanted to be a big movie producer. I'm not sure if it was for big payout turn arounds, were movie markets stable at the time?, or trying to branch out of the niche genre that was the rpg market? I don't know why and all it does it remind me of Kojima who was friends of the director of Vagrant Story.

there's no real telling. it could be the mindset of; if it isn't a movie, then it won't be taken seriously and is just for kids. movies were pretty stable for a while, and i think around in the 2000's and early 2010's, they were pretty big. that's around the time that harry potter was getting to the final couple of movies in the series. i think james cameron's avatar movie came out around that time too. metal gear was also popular and a lot of people did say it was like watching a movie with how long the cutscenes were. there's one cutscene in guns of the patriots is about 50 minutes long, which makes it qualify on it's own by both movie standards to be an actual full length movie.
13 did also come out during the "push for the West", movement that was happening in other companies in japan at that time. and movies are pretty popular in america. so that might have had an influence as well.

That also pissed me off was how fast they green lit a sequel while 12 was only given a DS title to tell a limped story and landlock me into classes I didn't build from the original PS2 title.

Putting that aside I think what really drove my blind hatred at the time to swear off Square for years was how they seemed to really push Lightning as the next Cloud. Moody, sword, spike hair, deep secrets of self loathing of past mistakes wait was that Squall too? Come on let's try to get a new face, I enjoyed FFX-2's Yuna and how more lively and forward she became after the events of FFX we can handle happy protags! There's also the shadow Lighting casted over the cast which is typical of JRPGS there's only one main protag that is the lead and face of the game but it felt like Aki from FF Spirits Within in that they wanted an exchangeable digital actress to suit their needs to plop into projects instead of being a fleshed character. They already had her lined up for her next movie so don't be too attached and don't give her too much personality we need her flexible so she's not pigeon holed for the next role.
Totally agree. I personally couldn't stand Lightning. Actually the only character I think I liked at all was Sazh.

FFX-2 was alright, but it seemed so forced, like Square just had to milk FFX for all it was worth as soon as possible.

That does sound right. Games are meant for children or adults with child-like minds. The real form of art is movies where all adults give you respect and prizes and prestige for. Even now when plenty of games more than qualify the title of artistic expression some old coot will say games are not art but then 10 years later be working on a video game directly himself.

And then Motomu Toriyama (the Writer for 13) used the same In-Medias-Res and Datalog style of storytelling for The 3rd Birthday.

I love the writing and characters in XIII, they’re not perfect but I can’t help but love them. The combat is also pretty unique and fun, though I can’t stand the eidolon encounters. It’s certainly different from the other Final Fantasy games but that’s not a bad thing.

Unique doesn't mean bad, no, but I think the near-universal negative reception to XIII in particular illustrates that Square didn't do it as well as they could have.

I may be biased regarding combat since I've never liked any ATB system, even back in IV.

In fact V would be perfect if someone could make a ROMhack without the ATB system.

doing something like that might not be possible. the game is designed around the atb system. the moves, spells and turn order depend on it.
you could try porting parts of the game to another game engine and fix, adjust or remove some parts that would make the game work in the style of the nes trilogy. that would be your best bet.

Yeah, I realize it'd probably be impossible. I think the job system in V was done perfectly, just always disliked the ATB part of combat. Not enough to not enjoy the game, granted.

what do you think about Bravely Default? i really like the job sistem on that game, i havent beaten final fantasy V but for what i played it's the same but with a dedicated space for pasives

@Pandaprewmaster325 @MasterEn @Mopeybloke @Strategist

On FF3(I only played the 3d remake btw for clarification's sake), I thinks that its the worst of the mainline ff games that I have played (1-5, 13 trilogy, and 15, and I'm also gonna say that I've played the first Bravely Default as well because its relevant to this discussion)

of the Job based games, FF1 is more unique in that you are locked into your jobs for the entire playthrough and both ff5 and bravely default do a job change system better by making every job more or less unique in some way. Out of the 22 jobs in the game (23 in the remake because it adds freelancer), 8 are just upgraded versions of previous jobs making them redundant, and 2 of those eight make all other jobs redundant, and then the red mage job is rendered useless by sage as well. Finally there is scholar, which only exists because of a gimmick for one boss in the entire game. so that's 7 out of the 22 jobs that are completely useless by the end of the game, oh and sage and ninja still outclass most of the other ones except for maybe black belt.

The gameplay is very gimmicky, in this dungeon you have to shrink down which makes physically classes useless, in this dungeon you have to turn into frogs which makes it just plain awful, in this dungeon you have to fight the boss 3 times, for this boss battle you have to use scholar, for this boss battle you have to use dragoon, etc. It leaves no room for experimentation, which is in my opinion half the point of the job based final fantasy games, for example in bravely default i tried a strategy where i used the move that attacks with your defense and double equipped shields and turned my characters into ICBMs, and in FF5, I beat the final boss with a party of all red mages plus the fact that the mimic class exists in that game as well, and even in FF2 i made guy a white mage/monk hybrid and Ricard into a pseudo Dark Knight. FF3 would never let you do anything like that, you have to use what the game s wants you to, when the game wants you to, it misses the point of a job/class system: to experiment.

And lastly the story is nothing special, it just feels like a different draft of FF1's story, though I do have one good thing to say here, when you leave the floating continent for the first time and see how big the world is compared to it and that it just looks like one town on the world map, and that up to this point you were just a big fish in a small pond, is probably one of my favorite story moments in the franchise from what I have played. But, that belies the problem as well, its the only memorable moment from that game, all the other ff games have multiple memorable story scenes or moments that stick with you, where i can barely remember the general outline of ff3's story and will probably completely forget it in a couple years

Overall I would go as far to say FF3, regardless of the version you are playing, is just a worse version of FF1. I genuinely think that it could be skipped by someone wanting to playthrough all the mainline ff games and they would lose nothing overall despite the one moment where you leave the floating continent for the first time
Story? What's that? Never heard of it probably an SNES thing , yeah FF3 is just bad quite meh i have high hopes for the 3d version however
Well thats not the reaction i hoped to get plans were ruined i guess

I haven't actually tried it yet. I've heard a bunch of good things about it, just haven't gotten around to trying it out myself.

Guys how would a navy seal copypasta look a sound like if it was final fantasy themed?

is that what your post was that you made the other day?
No that was just me going "how to describe final fantasy in the most horrid way possible" and it was what i came up with what do you think of it? Was it any good did i do each game justice or nah?

you did a pretty good job. i was certain that all of your frustration from 3 finally boiled up and exploded out and that post was the result of that. hopefully you are recovering well from the nightmare dungeon that is ff3's final dungeon.

I actually went head first and got clapped 3 times by cloud of darkness i was wondering why i keep missing my attacks luckily the emulator save is here to save the day so i went off to the 4 other rooms died couple times to the fire guardian and got clapped once by xande clone (very fun of you square to give some random creature meteor) so what i did was speed up the game and grind by spamming attack 10 minutes and i was few levels up i know its not the most legitimate way but man if square gonna fuck over like this by presenting me a very long dungeon and a boss like that i could give a less of a damn even then after all that slog hardly won.

Floating content was way more fun than anything else.

Glad you enjoyed my attempt at describing FF games in a bad way

yeah, i'm lvl 60 in the ds version but i wasn't aware of the hp stat being tied to stamina so going that many levels up and then getting to the final battle, i could get hit once with the particle beam attack. second hit was a instant game over. and with the ultimate gear being locked behind multiplayer in that version, and the onion knight job and the hidden dungeon behind that; i would have to grind forever in the crystal tower. i plan on playing the psp version the next time that i attempt to play 3.

Oh so characters gain stats based on job right? Yeah you need a monk/black belt it's quite lame as starseeker said like why i have base and upgraded version of the monk as seperate things? I actually forgot what level the team was on when i beaten the game probably something 50? 55? Its silly move from square to lock equipment behind MP.

PSP version might be the one i try next.

it's really good, i definetlly recomend it, i would also recomend to play around the encounter rate option to make the game much easier when you have to grind, and run around dungeons more calmlly, i'm really hyped for the remake, you can make crazy combinations with the jobs in that game, it's been a wile since i plaind the first one but i rememver beeing able to use a summon as a counter with mixing the off brand black mage that you get in the begining of the game and summoner, if you only care about game play i recomend bravely second more, it's way more polished and the jobs feel better, freelancer has a really situacional skill called halfsies, it turns a singel target item into aoe but with 50% power, i could honestlly keep talking about it i lot, it just feels really good.
tldr; game peak, play Bravely Second if you only care about game play

give me like, an hour to do something real quick
