Each game offers something different than the last or the next one , and for me it's difficult to decide on which one.

Final Fantasy 2 leveling up system is cool and what's cooler is if you use too much physical weapons the intelligence of the character goes down XD

Final Fantasy 3 job system on the NES is mediocre not the best really but jobs like scholar who kills people by slapping them with books is so memorable and of course DRAGOONS exist!

Final Fantasy 4 has a job system but it's predetermined , the jobs are unique to each character and it's a part of their identity and gameplay.

Final Fantasy 5 well do i need to say anything? Unique sprites for each character for each job that fit them , i beaten the game with double wielding spear faris! And mimic coin attack by all party members.

Final Fantasy 6 unique gameplay mechanics are like Final Fantasy 4 with each character having something unique , and the first ever system of summons empowering characters in different ways , whether you unlock magic which is severely restricted at the beginning or gaining more stats on level up.

Final Fantasy 7 the materia system is flexible and requires a little bit of thinking when it comes to deciding which weapon to use to house your materias , what am i saying XD Final Fantasy always required you to think , limit breaks are overpowered as hell and sad/angry status effects are definitely something to keep in mind.

Final Fantasy 8 flips everything upside down , even combat itself doesn't work like before , the role summons or "gurdian forces" play in this game is more important than the role summons play in Final Fantasy 6 , characters can be whatever you want the junction system is as flexible as 5 job system allowing characters to change their specialization in few seconds well who am i kidding if you play FF8 you will spend a good 20 minutes to junction everything perfectly , the game offers a unique 2 abilities or 3 depending on certain GFs ability slots similar to FF5 ability slots , these allow for making characters stronger in a certain direction Iike stronger magic or higher strength , you can switch your playstyle halfway through the game , more GFs mean more junctions mean more playstyles , want insanely high vitality? Get Shiva , want inhuman strength? Get ifrit! GFs level up themselves too extending the usefulness of summons that in previous and in the next installment would become weak later on , i found myself using Shiva in disc 3 and 4! Usually Shiva/ifrit and ramuh would be useless late game but not in 8 , you can also play the first card game ever in Final Fantasy series aka triple triad with a kickass theme and what's best about triple triad is you can convert cards to items for better weapons! , my favorite would definitely be the gunblade "fire" mechanic it requires good timing and each gunblade offers a different ultimate move , there are many mechanics to FF8 and it would take an hour to explain so this is enough.

For Final Fantasy 9 the game follows a similar formula to 4 and 6 , each character has a unique ability depending on their "job" , the game has a unique take on ability mechanic you see in 8 the abilities you could assign to characters required a GF but in 9 the abilities were built-in the character themselves , the ability mechanic however is restricted with gems that are used once you equip an ability depending on that ability gem cost of course , this allows for more specialized characters for example you can have a character with dragon slayer and maneater abilities this makes the character well equipped against human and dragon enemies , the game "limit break" mechanic i would say is one of my least favorite mechanics in the series as it's randomly activated and in some occasions the limit break activities in the wrong fight STILL if you get the limit break on an important fight you gonna have a blast! , card game returns but it's mediocre compared to triple triad and that one had a role in the gameplay well this one not so much.

Final Fantasy tactics is a strategy RPG meaning everything you know about Final Fantasy goes straight to the dumpster , it takes the job system of 5 and transfers it to its "ultimate" form customization is insane with this one , monks with knight armor , archers with charm , and mages with swords it's all possible with tactics job system , you can take assignments at the inn these give different rewards , a lot of cool stuff in tactics but i won't go over them all as this post is getting long at this point.

And now with all the FF games i played are listed detailing what each one offers (yes i played original Final Fantasy and it's the most basic of them) my picks would be after some difficulties with picking a favorite would be

GUNBLADE FIRE MECHANIC
FF5 JOB SYSTEM
FF7 MATERIA SYSTEM

Final Fantasy VII on the PSX has the best mechanic: you can shut that
crappy game off.

Whoa there, where you dropping that stuff?
I'd hold onto that if I were you!
Here are some examples:
- Healing spells/items/Fire hurt the Undead
- Reflect sucks if you ever need to heal
- Summons are a huge, flashy waste of MP
- Save your old equip for atats/statuses
GUNBLADE FIRE MECHANIC
FF5 JOB SYSTEM
FF7 MATERIA SYSTEM
Hey, you might be on to something here.
How would you feel about

- Timing-based Mechanics for every attack (like Mario RPG)
- FFT Job System
- Better story than anything after FF8

So I ended up fixing the hardlock. It wasn't too hard, I just moved my save to a usb using my modded ps2, and edited the save in a program called Hyne. I set the timer to the value it was BEFORE i left my console on irresponsibly.

Anyway, it's time to leave this damn place.

So i spent way too damn long trying to fight this thing, im not proud of how much time i spent on it. I was pretty sure it was unbeatable but i wanted to really find out. After all I literally just got done beating a really beefy and apparently optionally beatable boss. Alas, this POS full heals every few turns or so, and I can barely put a dent in him. You're not supposed to fight this guy. You're supposed to beat on him til he breaks down and then GET THE FUCK OUTTA THERE.

vlcsnap-2025-12-08-23h15m11s402.png

He chases you down on the overworld and you can escape a few encounters if you're smart. Fighting this guy is a pain. You just keep slapping him until you can run away, and it takes a while.

vlcsnap-2025-12-08-23h05m42s614.pngI'm pretty proud of myself for clearing the bridge scene without running into him.Its a straight shot, so he tries to throw a curveball by jumping around. I was smarter than that, and my stubbornness earlier had meant i had little time left.

carsmash.gif

It was tense. I had wasted so much time, I was worried i'd have to do it over. But I did it. I outran him.

CONTINUED PART 6

That boss IS beatable but make no mistake - it takes a lot of game knowledge and preparation to do so. Not like there's much of a reward for doing it either. You get an alternate cutscene when you get to the beach which is admittedly a nice touch and 50 AP for your GFs iirc.

thats fucking insane. i imagine you need to overlevel for that?? he heals so much when he breaks down

Can't overlevel with every enemy based on party average level 👉 👉

you're right... so how does one clear 5000hp with a turn limit??
- Draw all the magic you can early on
- Make sure to always, ALWAYS set the ability your GF is learning. I like to start with Stat-Junction abilities, they're always the top and first on the list (HP-J, STR-J, etc.)
- Junction all your strongest magic spells (having 100 of each) to your Strength, to deal massive damage with regular attacks. After Strength, you can add status effects or elementals, but don't forget to up your defense too, if you can.

Absolutely do not overlevel. FF8 will punish you for that. You have to use other mechanics to get better thunder spells than you're supposed to at that point. The card skill on one of your GFs. It's tedious af and not much fun.

I'd say you should just enjoy the game for now without looking into breaking it.

Oops forgot about those i was focused on the overall gameplay being entirely different , oh and potions work with reflect unless they don't.....summons actually have a large area of effect in tactics if i recall? Summoners were actually difficult to fight in multiple occasions i always made sure to kill them , and what makes summons useless? Odin and bahamut were always good.

Hey, you might be on to something here.
How would you feel about

Well i can't really judge Mario RPG time based mechanics since i only tried FF8 when it comes to time based mechanics i would have to play those games and see how the mechanic works/fits

For tactics job system i said it's more fleshed out than 5 but i prefer 5 over tactics gameplay and so the less micro management requiring system of 5 i find more enjoyable.

Better story than anything after 8? Well 8 had a good story didn't it? FF9 had a decent story too that game felt like it went back to the roots with the gameplay , story and the overall vibe i didn't play the last classic FF game yet that is 10 to finalize this judgment.

It's really cool seeing someone do one of these old-school forum LPs.

Also fun to see you playing this part of the game. In many ways, knowing how junctioning works makes the game too easy as you can give yourself insane stats really early on by using the right spells on the right stat.

Going in semi-blind like this for your first time is deffo the way to go!!! Thank god you escaped the soft lock lmao

Good luck !!!

and edited the save in a program called Hyne.
You know what's funny about this? Wait, nevermind.

Now I'm wondering if the person that made that program named it that after playing FF8...

Indeed
A boss in Final Fantasy III:
FF3NES-Hein.webp

He's the reason that I believe FF3 and FF8 share the same world.
X/X-2 and Vii supposedly do according to someone who worked on X/X-2 but the main series head has poo-pooed it. Still my head canon that little kid Shinra started the company from 7 after travelling to a different planet from Spira.

You know i'd be down to do some of these but i'm worried I wont have anything of value to say about the game i'm playing lol.

I'd be down to see it! I often worry i dont have much to say about things but just seeing a different perspective can be fun. In my video LPs i like to infodump, but its not exactly obscure information i talk about. its all about the experience of it all coming together, the personality, the commentary, the formatting.

Maybe I will. Would give me more motivation to actually play something new.

Hey everyone!!! Welcome back to Final Fantasy VIII!!!
vlcsnap-2025-12-09-16h03m24s241.pngAs we pull out of that awfully dangerous school exam, we find ourselves In the comfy resort town of Balamb.
There's even a giftshop here!

After getting some souvenirs and staying at the deluxe hotel, I find myself in the mood for... A game of cards. It only makes sense right? After all, the
Queen of Cards is here!

vlcsnap-2025-12-11-22h12m31s332.png

I've yet to play triple triad thus far.
But y'all have been telling me I should be playing it so here I go!

vlcsnap-2025-12-09-16h03m46s400.png
dammit.

SHIT

vlcsnap-2025-12-09-16h04m28s579.png
Y'know what they say, desperate times call for desperate measures.
Sure, savescumming like this is KINDA cheating, and sure it also wastes a lot of my time buuut.
I don't have many cards to afford to give up at this point.. I'll prob be less cheap later in the game.
Besides, i'm using these failures as a teaching tool.

vlcsnap-2025-12-09-16h04m49s012.png
YAYYY!!! (ff6victory.wav)
So I've gotten the hang of it better. To be honest when I first played I just winged it. But after reading the tutorial and doing some "test matches" i've gotten the very basic hang of triple triad. It's something between Pokémon and Reversi. Pretty simple on the face of it, but it can be really easy to get screwed over.

Alright, I've spent enough time here, let's go home.
We rented a car for... a lot of gil. (not like car rentals aren't cheap in the real world I guess ^^; )
Let's go for a ride!!!

vlcsnap-2025-12-09-16h06m52s992.png

Now that we're back at school its time to see who passed the exam.

vlcsnap-2025-12-09-16h07m58s146.png

I'm not sure who she is, but I saw her before.
Something about her feels very important, I mean she's in the fucking logo after all. I'm so curious what this mysterious girl is hiding.

I'm gonna close out this part with footage of a frankly, beautiful FMV. Gotta say, this game actually does mocap pretty well. A lot of early mocap games can look a bit uncanny but the animation in this game is just beautiful.
Embedding video isn't quite feasible so my apologies if my "unlisted video" technique isn't quite as immersive as pasting GIFs into the thread is.

CONTINUED PART 7 (wow just like the final fantasy game)

Insane patience and dedication posting these in such detail, I respect it. This style reminds of really old internet guides, back when there was dial-up and no youtube.

The more I try classic Final Fantasy on CRT filter, especially from the SNES era, the more I start to believe how much the Pixel Remasters could have been so much more. These latter ones are made with modern hardware in mind, so inevitably they will look wrong by forcing CRT or similar filters with mods. I think people already made plenty of comparisons and examples about that.

I can imagine how much you in this forum you have discussed the Pixel Remasters treatment here, and I can presume mostly negatively. I believe they're not the worst versions, but neither the best ones. And ofc not because of cut content based on remakes/other remasters.
Final Fantasy VI was definitely the most disappointing of all of them: too much bright, so many bugs and glitches and sprites that look much worse than the originals.

It's cool we got og III for the first time ever thanks to those. And, sure, the opera scene in VI that got HD-2Dified and even voice acted. Yeah, that's about it.

Actually no we didn't discuss the Pixel remaster as much.

I did see some members saying the pixel remasters made the games easier and all , personally when I see the pixel remasters i just think of how much these games could have been better if remade , especially FF1 and FF2 they would look amazing with modern technology.

I do agree the original FF3 getting a remaster for the first time was cool i do think FF3 is one of the least liked FF games by square or not that popular or brought up in discussion as much much 7 or 6 or 9 , suffice it to say the PSP ports look the best just look at how FF2 looks or FF1 looks on that device quite insane!

I do find the PR sprites to look quite more pixelated than the original games sprites XD the backgrounds look very modern but the monster sprites look less so it ends up looking a little strange? , i didn't google it yet but i do hope they got the warrior in FF1 pixel remaster the correct looks.
