Another issue is that if you play online, the harder combos will usually not work because of the lag or dropped frames and inputs. Pros even adjust to the lag and change the combo's timings.
You have to do same combo twice for offline and online, which is too much for most newcomers
i would say this mostly applies to older games since for the most part you can play like sf6 or t8 online thanks to rollback (although yes there are differences between ports like pc generally having a lower input delay than say ps5)

My top favorite fighting series:
Marvel vs Capcom (1 and 2 are the best)
Soul Calibur (3 and 6 are my faves)
Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi (especially 2 but 3 is good)
Smash (all of them)

this article explains the problem with rollback

"Rollback is completely unpredictable for the player (you have no idea when or where the rollback will occur, and as such if an opponent’s move suddenly jumps forwards three frames, you will be completely unprepared for it). In addition, players often recognise an enemy move by the ‘signature’ startup frames associated with that move — and in some rollback scenarios, this can cause a player not to recognise an attack they would otherwise recognise and realise it too late.

Due to the fairness issues with rollback as described above, I think it is important that competitive tournaments have rules around rollback settings (and that games allow for players, or spectators, to see the settings of each player).

While it’s almost impossible to detect a player who has caused their connection to be bad on purpose for a particular match, in order to throw off their opponent (which you could e.g. do when facing a strong opponent in brackets), ensuring players aren’t unduly fiddling with their input delay settings between matches can help to ensure that a player isn’t exploiting the rollback system to get any advantage

technically this is true but the only time ive seen something like this where it mattered and was also one sided was that sfv clip with cody doing air ex knee
the clip in question

whats important to note about the article though is that by its own admittance its working entirely through "this COULD be done to cheat" and not based in anything really concrete like tournament results or even anecdotal evidence (yes it mentions the jago overhead but the author didnt even bother to check the frame data which would take like 5 seconds)

rollback isnt perfect (desyncs are worse in this system) but now that most devs have created their own (mostly) stable version and ggpo is open source the question of this or delay is one that doesnt get considered with good reason

on PC it is rather worse and they opened a new can of worms, especially with crossplay active as not all machines are the same and in case the machine meets the minimum or lower requirements, especially in gpu intensive games where frames deep below 60fps , it can cause even more desyncs. As a result you had the paradox that in SFV the native console lag became the preferred tournament standard, as opposed to the PC version with lower lag if you disabled vsync, something that would cause desyncs online.

i dunno if id say thats on rollback specifically since shoddy pc ports or going up against a gaming laptop is more of a hardware/the game itself issue rather than networking

i havent really kept up with the newer stuff like sf6 or tekken performance wise (i just watch sf casually rn) so i havent really had to deal with crossplay fuckery which means i could be just talking out of my ass for this

While we need more cheat-proofing I don't like when people assume everyone is a potential cheater.

Or else let's no longer to Olympic games solely because of any undetectable form of cheating.

I remember on Shoryuken, a top Sagat ranked player was notorious for using lag switches, as it was evident from the replays. He was ass in real tourneys as a result.
Anti-cheat tools are useless in that case and those switches are used in other online genres too

So how is Injustice 2 really? It’s on sale for peanuts and I’m a bit tempted because I’m in both superhero and fighting game mood.
I’ve never played it because I’m not really a MK fan so I kind of always dismissed it.
One of the things that’s currently holding me back is that it seems to have some tacked-on gear/equipment system. Does that come into play in regular matches at all?

Got a month of Gamepass earlier and just noticed it was on there so might as well just try it for myself right away.

As far as I know, the gear system doesn't affect regular matches at all (apart from maybe extra HP if you level up). You'll maybe gain a new ability if you level up your character a bunch, but even that won't interfere as long as you don't equip said ability. I see it more as an excuse to people keep playing the single player modes if nothing else. Plus this is all turned off in competitive matches anyway.

If you played the first game, you'll feel right at home, it's more of the same except it looks nicer.

Thanks for the clarification.
I never played the first one either which is why I’m kind of excited. Only sad part is that Martian Madhunter isn’t here, but other than that it looks neat.
Seeing Flash’s super move really got a laugh out of me

What’s everyone’s opinion on the latest Mortal Kombat (1, I guess)?
I’ve never played any MK since I found them kinda corny and the fatalities too intense for my fragile little boy mind, but I’ve seen a bit of gameplay from it and it looks pretty neat. It’s on sale, but still a tough sell since I’m a stranger to them and since it’s like a billion gigs in install size.
Also helps that Conan is playable, since it’s like my favorite movie and he looks incredible.

I’ve heard pretty mixed opinions in general about (both story and gameplay-wise) it but figured I’d ask. I don’t mind that they rebooted the timeline or whatever since I’m totally new to the series. The only thing even I catched is that Shao Kahn has been downranked lol.

Does it qualify as a fighting game?

Update: I boughted it 👀
The complete edition for 20 bucks, what's the worst that could happen?

This has gotta be the biggest fighting game I've seen, that install size is completely bananas.

I'd say it does! Man the box art for this game is wild

NetherRealm Studios games are Stange to me, On the casual/single player side there usually pretty fun to go through with lots of single player content, but the competitive side tells a pretty different story. The scene usually dies off within the first year of the games release, then they all wait for the next game to come out and the cycle repeats. This is usually why I stay away from them, I don't really want to commit any time to a game that has poor staying power. I'm also just not really a fan of how they handle game mechanics and they're general art aesthetic, but I could write a whole novella on that so I'll spare you 😅

Transition to hitbox was not as difficult as I imagined. Reason was that prior to that, I had issues using wasd keys for any genre outside fps and third person games. I was used using right hand and arrow keys instead and left hand for action buttons.

No issues when using a gamepad or arcade stick, but except thumb, rest of left hand fingers were not used to directional inputs.
Only downside the 720 moves without shortcuts. Huge advantage is that you can not accidentally press the jump button during play and training, unlike with pad or stick.
Got a Cosmoxgaming c16, updated the firmware and is very responsive with almost zero input lag. Perhaps the most responsive stick I tried, like using run-ahead. Lighting is also very helpful playing in the dark. Though it has far too many extra buttons and it easy to press the wrong button sometimes.
Will stick to it, though I'll use also pad and stick from time to time in order not to lose shape.
It's quite interesting to see a controversial game from before Doom and Mortal Kombat

I'm surprised they didn't get sued over the Conan imagery.

There were many trendy movies with barbarians back then, not just Conan.
