I recently decided to do a replay of Final Fantasy VI for the first time in probably close to 20 years. I originally played one of the fan translations of the Japanese version. I went to have a browse through the repo and I'm kind of overwhelmed by the choices available. FFVI was never really one of my favourites. I liked it more than 4 and 7 but less than 5 and 9. So I was thinking of trying one of the many hacked versions. The changes in T-edition seemed the most appealing but, after making it to Figaro, I'm really not sure if I'm enjoying it much.

The combat is just a bit over the top. The battle with the two soldiers after Figaro sinks into the desert almost made me quit. I ended up having to turn wait mode on and slow the battle speed down and basically reload until I didn't get an RNG that immediately killed Terra before I even had time to react. Every battle so far, even random ones, has been the same. Enemies that attack 2 or more times before your first turn and do enough damage to kill a character in one round at a point in the game where the only store I've even been able to access was the one in Figaro. I don't mind difficulty, but this feels more like playing against the RNG than anything else. It's difficult in a way that doesn't feel fair.

So, I thought I'd ask what version of Final Fantasy VI other people like the best. I only had enough poll options for the snes versions and I don't really care that much about later ports of the game. I'm more interested in hearing about which snes version people like the best. Obviously if all you've played is a different version than feel free to mention that but I don't plan on playing any of the other versions.

I don't see the Story Mode hack there, where you can kill any enemy with one hit.

I didn't see it in the repo, also there's a limited number of poll entries you can make. I probably wouldn't have added it anyway because it seems more like watching Final Fantasy VI: The Movie than actually playing the game.

The thing is: I don't wanna spend another 10 years of my life to finish this again 😅

A Soldier's Contingency, AKA the only sane version of FF6 as far as I'm concerned.
