Genesis Favorite Genesis games?

I'd still say that the original Universe really has big issues, several downgrades compared to Online (mostly the story being more shonen-esque, no combo until AotI came into play and perhaps it being Photon Art spammy that makes you better as a Hunter in solo).

Agreed

And even then my issue is that they feel "cheap" (not big remakes) as well as an art style that lacks the 80's feel.

I would still play them once I'm done with 2 and 3.
1 i mostly agree with, 2 on the other hand is a improvement over the gensis version, though that comes at the cost of some of the cost of the 80's feel.

One benefit of the generations games is they have a save transfer feature from gen 1 to gen 2, though explaining that is in itself a spoiler for gen 2.

2 and 3 are harder to get into imo (maybe because of the dungeon design and walking speed for the first and many other issues for the other). The first game had the excuse of being 8-bits and even then there were were various battle backgrounds instead of a blue grid.

Eeeh, Zero is good. Rough on the edges but still impressive for the hardware it was on.

Of course it feels like a downgrade because of the lack of a secondary d-pad but you can still play it mostly like PSO (with PSU's Photon Arts) and chaining makes you do more damage.

At least Ambition and Portable 2 really improved upon that and 2 Infinity is as good as Blue Burst.

Generations of Doom had good ideas but not executed well...

I would rule out Ys as it's an ARPG and not a turn based one personally.
ys 8 is my favorite game of all time, not favorite rpg of all time, if we're talking pure turn based rpg, ps4 still holds that title.

Lacrimosa of Dana is arguably one of the best Ys game and even a great ARPG.

I would still rate Origin and Felghana above in my personal list but it's because I prefer the 3-weapons/magic system over the Team-based one that Seven introduced.

When it comes to ys, 8 for me is a good balance of action rpg with party based rpg, hence why it's my favorite game of all time, lightning in a bottle if you will.

Oath is a very close second for me and while i love origin, to me oath is just much higher than it.

I wish X was on the same level but I feel that it was more of a draft of a new system than a proper game...

IX had issues even if I liked the Monstrum Powers and the whole Prison theme of the game.

Oath is great as a Metroidvania experience but sadly it's very short and I'd replay the game to get "fed". PS: It's out in the west as a remaster.

PPS: I do love Origin for being more like a Diablo-esque game with levels in a tower (but no outside area sadly).

Honestly X has alot of problems and alot of them i put at the foot of adol feeling more like a side character in his own game, combat wise it was good, but the ship combat effectively was pointless and the characters were in general far less interesting in comparison to any of the games since 6.

General Chaos. Funny and expressive sprite animations in a real time squad war game.
Haunting starring polterguy, "funny short bursts kind of game, it can be a little repetitive in long play sessions.
Awesome games, both of 'em ?

I'm a big fan of General Chaos, it's so goofy. What a great animation style for the Genesis-era.

I also played Haunting starring Polterguy for a bit, I didn't actually intend to play much gameplay when I set out to, just to test the ROM and make sure it worked.. well, I ended up playing it for hours after I started it up and made sure the controls worked. ?

The funny thing, it's that I never played these games back in the day(I was a Nintendo nerd until around the end of the N64 life cycle).
The megadrive, with it's bigger(than the snes) max resolution and processor speed, was perfect for games with lots of sprites onscreen and fast action, like shoot em ups.(Blast processing jokes aside).

I can think of a few:

The classic Sonic Trilogy
(Requires no explanation).

The Classic Streets of Rage Trilogy
(SoR3 JP please, don't sully my games with artificial difficulty to try to curb rental clears).

ESWAT
(Cooler and grittier than the arcade counterpart).

The Super Shinobi Duology
(Revenge of Shinobi and Shinobi 3,
but allow me to be pedantic and use the Japanese names to keep things tidy).

Gunstar Heroes
(Legendary, needed to be longer, or a sequel on the same system).

The Road Rash Trilogy
(2 and 3 are more fun than the first)

The Strike Trilogy
(Desert, Urban and Jungle Strike)

Ranger X
(Beautiful visual tricks here)

Phantasy Star 2, 3, 4
(That one is rocky, only 4 is truly polished enough to be a classic IMO)

Strider
(Strider 2 for the Mega Drive doesn't exist, it's just a bad dream)

Rocket Knight/Sparkster
(Super confusing franchise split between the MD and SNES with very
different games, but all excellent).

Contra Hard Corps
(SNES lovers will hate me, but this is the finest Contra by my reckoning
JP version is kinder, so I prefer it because I'm not so hard core(ps).

Pulseman
(Creative platformer from Gamefreak before they were stuck churning Pokésludge for the N overlords.
Can't beat the greats, but worth a play).

i've never fully meshed with the genesis personally, i really only have one game on it that i can confidently say that i like, and that's Toejam and Earl. never been super big on 2D Sonic unforch, and outside of that i don't know all that many Genesis games... any cool and unique recommendations from you folks?

i played about half way through phantasy star 1 and really liked it, i guess i didn't consider there'd probably be some sequels on the genesis... now i really gotta check that out!
PS1 is my favorite master system game yeah. The sequels on genesis are great.

I second Shining Force, as well as it's sequel. Gunstar Heroes has to be my favorite game on the platform though. I never heard about it or anything, just got it as a present, but I'm glad I did because it's easily my favorite run and gun game. Contra: Hard Corps is another good choice for a run and gun game if that's your thing. Chase HQ 2 was one I never owned, but rented often. Mutant League Football is one of the only sports games I play and I remember having a lot of fun with Shadowrun as well.

Some of my favorites. All platformers.
Aladdin
Animaniacs
Quackshot
The Return of Shinobi
Shinobi III

Definitely Alien Soldier and Gunstar Heroes. Contra: Hard Corps and Monster World IV are also well-liked, but play the JP version of Hard Corps for balanced difficulty. Shining Force II and Phantasy Star IV are great RPGs. Ranger-X and Alisia Dragoon are cool/weird action games. Twinkle Tale is a "hidden gem."

Personally I have a soft spot for Toejam & Earl. Weirdo co-op roguelike that looks like a 90s Nicktoon. Nothing else like it.

Growing up with metal slug, it was fun discovering contra and Gunstar heroes. MS is still number 1 but I adore contra now and I really like GSH
