Favorite "AAA slop"?

That's true, I really enjoyed Far Cry 5. The setting alone was enough to interest me, and it's fun to blow rednecks up in crazy ways.
Ubisoft sure managed to appeal to me for some reason around 2018-2020 lol.
Far Cry was quite enjoyable, I like seeing father or I guess Joseph Seed as a character

I can't think of any in recent memory but overall probably Skyrim. As much as I did enjoy it, After playing two characters I kind of reached my absolute limit and don't feel like ever playing again.

When I got older I made it a "mission" to only have one character per Elder Scrolls game that I tried to immerse myself as much as possible as.
So far I have a save in Morrowind from 2019 and a save in Skyrim from 2021 which are the only ones I've played on in those games since starting them, and it honestly made the games much more fun, for some reason.
Some sort of Dark Elf battlemage-type character in Morrowind, and an orcish warrior-type in Skyrim.

Its a very good policy! my first character I played seriously, it was a High Elf mage and he made the decision to remove Thalmor presence from Skyrim because it made him look bad.

The second I played absolutely for the LOLs and went for something unusual in an Argonian assassin that could one shot sneak kill everything.

Try and guess which of those was actually fun, haha.

I genuinely did like a lot of the early battle royale games, like Fortnite and especially the original CoD Warzone (which I guess got a sequel somewhere down the line?). They were incredibly simple and didn't really scratch my TF2 itch at all, but as free little multiplayer shooter games they were an awful lot of fun. I wiled away a few summer days during the pandemic on each of 'em.

These days, the genre is either dead or loaded with so many gimmicks it isn't fun anymore, but I do think there was promise in it during the late 2010s. I preferred Warzone to Fortnite because you didn't have to do anything besides move and shoot and it was in first person, but both games were very enjoyable at the time.

Someone said it but marvel rivals, though it's "AAA Slop" aspect is far more in technical than execution. Right now I would categorize them slightly differently, like Monster Hunter Wilds is coming out, and is absolutely modern "AAA Slop" When it comes to the weird backwards back flip the AAA industry did collectively especially with Unreal Engine 5. We got more powerful hardware running games at worse visuals and worse frame rates than last generation, sometimes even PS4 pro winning easily in combination of pleasing visuals, resolution and frame rate. While for me it fell off, Overwatch has fantastic in house built engine optimized to run EASILY in high (90+) frame rates at native 1080p or 1440p even on older cards like a GTX 1060. Meanwhile, Monster Hunter Wilds, Marvel Rivals, and other technical AAA slop need to run at native 540p, at damn Vita resolution internally to produce a smeary unpleasant "1080p" image making effects look massively worse than they did on PS4 and sometimes even PS3, at bad framerates. This generation is truly where all technical aspects have been downgraded comparing to half-gen upgrade of last gen. At least PS4 Pro runs games natively at 1440p if not more, sometimes at 60fps with dips but mostly at solid 30 which is more than the 540p internal resolution can do on PS5 apparently.

Oh I hate this meme of a generation, not to underline it with it all also costs two times more.

To say; I do not expect Monster Hunter Wilds to disappoint it's fans as a game, and I enjoyed a hero shooter refresh Marvel Rivals has been, but both in technical execution are absolute AAA garbage, and so have been many games that came out and so are a lot of games that are to come out.

Even as a Monster Hunter fan I acknowledge readily that the technical side of Wilds is unacceptable.

They absolutely have to optimize and bring hardware floor demands down via patches because 1080p/60 requiring framegen trickery is a standard that needs to be pushed back against.

I know this will sound like a copout but i really hate every AAA game made by a non Japanese company that released after 2008. I can't think of a single one that i genuinely like.
Also it's weird seeing "slop" breach containment it should've been one of those words that stayed a /v/ only thing because i fucking hate this buzzword.

I myself loved first few years of Overwatch when it was fresh and lovable, and Days Gone on my PS4, Warframe and some more titles like that if I give it thought - Tony Hawk's 1+2 - to not give that type of blanket statement myself. I would say number of appealing western high budget games dropped off a lot after PS3 generation but they still exist.
I also have no idea since when slop, a normal english word was a 4chan thing, and whenever 4chan's /v/ mattered they never used the word memetically.
They did use ni-

I actually greatly enjoyed Far Cry 6. It's objectively slop, but it got me somehow regardless. I think it's because it wasn't afraid to be goofy, considering all its AI teammates were actually absurd magical animals. That and it had a good selection of old fashioned guns which I always like using, I was running around with the lever action 'cowboy' repeater, the single action revolver and the M60 (totally old timey) almost exclusively. Most of the game was objectively trash around that though (mainly the ammo system which was nonsensical and broken).

I also played Marvel Rivals for a good bit of time like a few people in here, but I've since had my fun and gotten out.

I also enjoyed the Division games for what they were, being MMO tier gun/RPG slop.

That's true. It's effective for conveying a certain "feel" to a game, though (even though people's definitions usually vary a bit) which is why I used it.
Nothing doesn't not "breach containment" anymore really because it's just edgy teens who go there to be edgy so they spread the terms around regardless, or sad old farts who never left and complain about how everyone but them is a bot lol.

It used to be coupled with the Spongebob sadly eating shit/dogfood out of a bowl with a photoshopped zoomer hairstyle image when talking specifically about AAA games, which is likely how it specifically entered video game discussion vernacular.

we should define AAA slop because this is turning out again into complain box 101

To me at least it means the lowest effort, lowest common-denominator AAA games of buzzword mechanics; it's got crafting because those always sell, or it's an Ubisoft type open world because those always sell, and so on.

It's different for everyone, which is why I was interested in knowing specifically the games people like despite acknowledging they would define them as such, and I think everyone's been pretty cool about keeping to the question at hand?

To me "AAA slop" means games that contain mechanics and trends that are designed to cater to as many players as possible at the same time, often diluting the experience, or games being designed in a way where it constantly tries to keep your attention, usually to the detriment of the experience.

That's just my general definition, though.

Edit: I'd also say that it can be different for different genres.

For me, Soul Calibur 5's my favorite "AAA Slop". I can see why it's the black sheep of the Soul Calibur series due to the lack of features and...an incomplete story mode but often liked the gameplay more than 4 and 6. Say what you will of the few existing legacy characters with some of their moves gone, the random critical hits rates, changes of the Guard Impact mechanic, and the removal of the Recoverable Stun State but out of the HD Trilogy of Soul Calibur, 5 strikes a good balance between bombastic and functional to me. Though, I still find Soul Calibur 1 to 3 a bit more fun to me.

I'd also like to add I think one of the best examples of AAA slop I can think of in the last little bit: Gotham Knights. It has horribly shoehorned in and out of place crafting complete with nonsense stat affixes and elemental effects (why is Batgirl slapping together random materials to make a tonfa, and why is it an ice tonfa that freezes people?), a really silly Ubisoft tier open world, and the most by the book, safe, overly positive storyline. That being said, I bought it day one and somehow played it all the way through. I have actual regrets about that one.

Well, would not know nothing about that I closed /v/ more than less permanently in 2014-ish and even then I thought that was later than should've.

And I'd like to think I outlined with specific examples but ones you can watch entire Threat Interative breakdowns for more in-depth analysis about the current technical degenerative state of AAA industry. And the word is absolutely accurate there because you can break it down to say "AAA developers these days are absolutely more sloppy and careless about how they do things than in the past"
And I keep saying AAA developers because ironically smaller studios and indies are making technically sound decisions for their games more often than not still.
