Ever owned a Sega CD or 32X?

The Mega/Sega CD was a great piece of hardware that was ruined by too many FMV games and ports of regular MD/Gen games with Red Book Audio soundtracks. Not enough games came out that made use of its unique capabilities in a good/fun way.

Sonic CD, Soulstar, Shining Force CD, Silpheed, Popful Mail, Wing Commander, Snatcher, Final Fight CD & Thunderhawk (Thunderstrike in the US) are some of the better games I think. Also don't forget that CD+G compatibility for some drunk karaoke sessions if you happen to own the required media.

The 32X was an interesting idea but was overpriced, under supported and just caused confusion in the marketplace. It also has way fewer good games than the Mega/Sega CD, though I am quite fond of Virtua Racing Deluxe.

At least Sega CD actually had RPG and it's make sense than something like the 32X. Which I like the 32X and I prefer it more than something like the Jaguar. But the 32X in general is basically an anime filler arc that struck in the middle between the Blast Processing of the Genesis and the Futuristic Early 3D Saturn.

I've still got all my SEGA systems...

Master System
Genesis
SEGA CD
CDX (sold it)
32X
Saturn
Dreamcast
GameGear
Nomad

I even have the JVC X'Eye.

The SEGA CD was killed by full motion video games.

I wish SEGA would get back into the system arena.

A friend of mine had a Sega CD. His family was richer than mine so he would get a lot of unique consoles and sometimes would let me borrow them. He had a JVC combo Sega Genesis and Sega CD console. I thought the Sega CD was really cool back in the day. As soon as I played some RPGs with full motion videos I knew that CD-ROM technology was the future of gaming. In 1993 that was unheard of. But SEGA really failed to support the Sega CD. They stretched themselves too thin between the Genesis, Sega CD and 32X. There are only a handful of Sega CD games worth mentioning. And only 2 or 3 32X games. In that sense, Nintendo was smart because they included additional processing power in the cartridges instead of requiring a whole new console or add-on. They were able to keep up with SEGA technologically without fragmenting their users with too many consoles. Then Sony came in with the Playstation and really ate Nintendo's lunch for not adopting CD-ROM technology.

From the Sega CD catalog, I'd recommend Sonic CD, Lunar 2, Popful Mail and Snatcher. Sega CD emulation was a bit of a pain for a while but RetroArch does the job well enough from what I've seen.
I saw the JVC x-eye once at a Micro Center and never saw it anywhere else again
The SCD failed because most of the games were crappy FMV titles

I hear in America consoles in the 90s were extremely expensive, which is different from how it was here with the grey market being so dominant. I imagine owning these add-ons costed a kidney.
I gotta admit... I didn't even know they existed until the AVGN episode, so I never owned either system.

I also never knew anyone who owned them until waaaaay into the "retro wave" of the mid-aughts (and even then, it was like two people who had them).

I don't think I missed much by not having them, but I would love to have at least one of them for displaying purposes.

What about you?

Pff...32X and Sega CD. The real accessory people should have bought was the Power Base Converter so you could play Master System games ::poggurai

Actually, that was something SEGA should have pushed much harder. The chief complaint among parents was that the SNES couldn't play NES games, of which they had already brought several over the years and were now likely to be tossed aside.

It wasn’t cheap at launch. If I recall, $300 for the CD and $150 for the 32x. Course, a couple years later you could find them used or sometimes at overstock stores for a fraction of that. For reference, the PSX launched at $300. I picked up a CD and two 32xs for a song at the game store I worked at in 2002. We wouldn’t take them as trade-ins. Never played much 32x, but I played the crap out of fighting games and Snatcher with the Justifier on CD.

[EDIT: Wait, I was thinking Saturn for the fighting games… So just Snatcher on the CD. :p]

I have a 32X. Here's the games I have for it.
  • Chaotix
  • After Burner
  • Space Harrier
  • Star Wars Arcade
  • Virtua Racing Deluxe
I initially bought it because I wanted to play Chaotix. I love Sonic, and Chaotix has always remained a mystery for me and I was dying to try it out. It's not amazing or anything but I did enjoy the game.

I picked up those other 4 games later on and they're all fantastic! Personally I'm content with just these 5 games but if I ever find a good deal on other 32X games than I would like to pick some up. But these 5 alone make the 32Xbworth it for me. These versions of Virtua Racing, Space Harrier and After Burner are the definite versions. Star Wars is fun too.

As for the Sega CD, I haven't ever found a good deal on one, so I just play the games from a Mega Everdrive.
