Ever owned a Sega CD or 32X?

Zaxxon Motherbase 2000.
Nice! Never heard of that one! I also love the incredibly cute naming convention of putting "2000" at the end of so many games at the time. It made them just slightly futuristic and then dated them like crazy XD

The Mega/Sega CD was a great piece of hardware that was ruined by too many FMV games and ports of regular MD/Gen games with Red Book Audio soundtracks. Not enough games came out that made use of its unique capabilities in a good/fun way.

Sonic CD, Soulstar, Shining Force CD, Silpheed, Popful Mail, Wing Commander, Snatcher, Final Fight CD & Thunderhawk (Thunderstrike in the US) are some of the better games I think. Also don't forget that CD+G compatibility for some drunk karaoke sessions if you happen to own the required media.

The 32X was an interesting idea but was overpriced, under supported and just caused confusion in the marketplace. It also has way fewer good games than the Mega/Sega CD, though I am quite fond of Virtua Racing Deluxe.

At least Sega CD actually had RPG and it's make sense than something like the 32X. Which I like the 32X and I prefer it more than something like the Jaguar. But the 32X in general is basically an anime filler arc that struck in the middle between the Blast Processing of the Genesis and the Futuristic Early 3D Saturn.

I've still got all my SEGA systems...

Master System
Genesis
SEGA CD
CDX (sold it)
32X
Saturn
Dreamcast
GameGear
Nomad

I even have the JVC X'Eye.

The SEGA CD was killed by full motion video games.

I wish SEGA would get back into the system arena.

Have I ever owned a Sega CD and/or a Sega 32X? No to both of them.

A friend of mine had a Sega CD. His family was richer than mine so he would get a lot of unique consoles and sometimes would let me borrow them. He had a JVC combo Sega Genesis and Sega CD console. I thought the Sega CD was really cool back in the day. As soon as I played some RPGs with full motion videos I knew that CD-ROM technology was the future of gaming. In 1993 that was unheard of. But SEGA really failed to support the Sega CD. They stretched themselves too thin between the Genesis, Sega CD and 32X. There are only a handful of Sega CD games worth mentioning. And only 2 or 3 32X games. In that sense, Nintendo was smart because they included additional processing power in the cartridges instead of requiring a whole new console or add-on. They were able to keep up with SEGA technologically without fragmenting their users with too many consoles. Then Sony came in with the Playstation and really ate Nintendo's lunch for not adopting CD-ROM technology.

From the Sega CD catalog, I'd recommend Sonic CD, Lunar 2, Popful Mail and Snatcher. Sega CD emulation was a bit of a pain for a while but RetroArch does the job well enough from what I've seen.
I saw the JVC x-eye once at a Micro Center and never saw it anywhere else again
The SCD failed because most of the games were crappy FMV titles

I hear in America consoles in the 90s were extremely expensive, which is different from how it was here with the grey market being so dominant. I imagine owning these add-ons costed a kidney.
I gotta admit... I didn't even know they existed until the AVGN episode, so I never owned either system.

I also never knew anyone who owned them until waaaaay into the "retro wave" of the mid-aughts (and even then, it was like two people who had them).

I don't think I missed much by not having them, but I would love to have at least one of them for displaying purposes.

What about you?

Pff...32X and Sega CD. The real accessory people should have bought was the Power Base Converter so you could play Master System games ::poggurai

Actually, that was something SEGA should have pushed much harder. The chief complaint among parents was that the SNES couldn't play NES games, of which they had already brought several over the years and were now likely to be tossed aside.

It wasn’t cheap at launch. If I recall, $300 for the CD and $150 for the 32x. Course, a couple years later you could find them used or sometimes at overstock stores for a fraction of that. For reference, the PSX launched at $300. I picked up a CD and two 32xs for a song at the game store I worked at in 2002. We wouldn’t take them as trade-ins. Never played much 32x, but I played the crap out of fighting games and Snatcher with the Justifier on CD.

[EDIT: Wait, I was thinking Saturn for the fighting games… So just Snatcher on the CD. :p]

I have a 32X. Here's the games I have for it.
  • Chaotix
  • After Burner
  • Space Harrier
  • Star Wars Arcade
  • Virtua Racing Deluxe
I initially bought it because I wanted to play Chaotix. I love Sonic, and Chaotix has always remained a mystery for me and I was dying to try it out. It's not amazing or anything but I did enjoy the game.

I picked up those other 4 games later on and they're all fantastic! Personally I'm content with just these 5 games but if I ever find a good deal on other 32X games than I would like to pick some up. But these 5 alone make the 32Xbworth it for me. These versions of Virtua Racing, Space Harrier and After Burner are the definite versions. Star Wars is fun too.

As for the Sega CD, I haven't ever found a good deal on one, so I just play the games from a Mega Everdrive.

I found a model 2 on Facebook marketplace 3 years ago.
Haggled the women down from £350 to £150.

There is no copy protection on the CD side which is great, First games I attempted were Ecco the Dolphins enhanced CD Port, Snatcher & Thunderhawk.
All ran perfectly, they just had to be burnt at x5 speed or below otherwise the poor girl would get confused when loading data.
Wound up playing quite a bit of Might and Magic III & Lunar the Silver Star.

Its a great addon if you feel music is enough to elevate gameplay & especially if you enjoy Pre-Ultima Underworld RPG's/Classic Dungeon Crawlers.
Very few games make good use of the Mega CD's additional power. It essentially has a built in Super FX Chip just sat disused.
Many of the best games are Japanese exclusive or cancelled late in development, but I enjoy booting her up from time to time.

Just a warning, you can't boot original Megadrive games through it.
Although complication disks of Cartridge games exist no one (to my knowledge) has reversed engineered them to allow you to burn/load custom roms.
So you'll still need a third party SD Card reader to get the best out of your system.

The MegaCD does allow to change the default bios though, so you can switch the region on the fly.
There isn't much point in doing so but it does bypass what little region locking exists on the Megadrive/Genesis.

As for the 32X?

Not even I could justify owning that monstrosity ☠️
I think its super interesting from a historical stand point but I can not think of a single game worth owning the console for-

Oh God damn it.

Exactly one, yes. Proto Rogue Squadron. Also, “Ezri Muldoon?” Mankind can stop coming up with names I guess, cause you won.

Nah, I'm just old, unoriginal and fond of using the old Warcraft naming system of 1+1=new

I'm just thankful she had the sense to get away from Worf, after that domestic terrorism he got up to on Risa.

Heh. Worf would buy the good times > weak men schtick. Think it was a writers room running gag to give him the least plausible ships.

To be fair, it's Star Trek; every ship is implausible, the way they wrote them.

Back when I was a dumb kid I loved Sonic! I wanted to play Sonic CD! PlayStation? SNES? NOO NOOOO it's gotta be SONIC CD!
So I got a cheap Multi Mega for my b'day. Along with Sonic CD.

I think I saw a discounted copy of Snatcher next to the Multi Mega box for like...20 bucks? But was it Sonic CD?
NO.
