I'm not a religious person but I'm a bit bored of the whole "religion is a blight to humanity, preventing him from evolving" trope we're getting in animes and other media.
Sure, the idea of the Church being led by corrupt people has always been a good subject to tackle (especially if the world is set in the middle ages before Martin Luther) yet has been tired beyond recognition.
As for Evangelion I do like the aesthetic but at the same time the "angels" aren't even the biblical ones, just out-worldly aliens that are called as such.
Finally I'm also getting a bit tired of seeing once again a Shinji being depressed and whining about his condition, as if he was never allowed to evolve as a person.
I don't know if my take is hot or not (not that I care) but for me the series ended with this
Anything else is either an alternative timeline or isn't canon to my eyes. No hospital scene (why was this a thing?), no Asuka getting her eye pierced, no Rei becoming giant and naked (lol), no choking in the beach, no turning into soup, nothing!
