The Mana Tree has withered…

Mana has vanished from the world, and monsters now roam the land. A young girl, searching for her missing family, crosses paths with destiny. Will the Mana Tree blossom once again? Or will darkness claim the world forever?

Embers of Mana is a brand-new Mana adventure for the Game Boy. Embark on a grand journey filled with mystical locales, gripping story scenes, foreboding dungeons, and a sweeping soundtrack. All in the palm of your hand!

In 1991, SquareSoft released Seiken Densetsu, the first game in the Mana series, known as Final Fantasy Adventure in the U.S. and Mystic Quest in Europe. Now, in 2026, Ok Impala! presents a faithful homage: a complete ROM hack built using the original game’s engine.

Crafted over four years, Embers of Mana captures the spirit of 1991, when small, passionate teams created timeless handheld adventures. It delivers a fresh experience that feels authentic to the era—simple, immersive, and full of wonder.

Ok Impala! is the creator of Zelda II - Amida’s Curse and Super Mario Kart - Epic Racers. Embers of Mana marks his third major ROM hack, and a loving tribute to the golden age of Game Boy gaming.

Features:

  • A brand-new story
  • A completely original soundtrack
  • An entirely new world and dungeons
  • Custom graphics
  • Thoughtful gameplay tweaks
  • Super Game Boy compatibility
  • And so much more—it’s essentially a brand-new Mana game!
The download includes helpful documentation along with maps of the dungeons and world!

but an updated version means that I have to start from the beginning again or is there are patcher file? You know back in the day when I coded games I used Clickteams Patchmaker which is a tool that would let you patch files but I guess here it is seen like a brand new rom file and I need to start the game from the beginning?
Just rename the save file used by the emulator and make it match the same file name as the one you're using now. Unless a new patch breaks save compatibility that's how you migrate saves from old versions of romhacks to new ones. I don't think the save was messed up in this one. Or else they would have said so in the readme
edit: depending on the emulator it's usually either a .srm or .sav file

When a game gets an update patch we change the post date to bump it to the front page so that people will see it and be able to update theirs if they got it earlier. Instead of not noticing it updated and being left with an old copy. Since if it didn't get bumped to the front then most people wouldn't think to go and search for it to see if it had an update. It also helps get the attention of people who didn't notice it before. So that's a plus too. We don't have to change the date in the post when updating it and cause it to stay far back on whatever page it was on, but I think it's better to do it like it's being refreshed with a new version.

Also look again if you don't see anything different. It's been updated from v1.2 to v1.31. There's a new Hard mode set of roms for each SGB pallette. Check out the changelog in the description for what was altered.

Stupid Question but how does this site here actually work? I thought new stuff that just got added appears on the front page. Embers of Mana was posted here a while ago and now it is at the top of the front page again. How does this work? Has there been an update? Because I do not really see anything so I do not get what it is on the front page again. It is not like I mind since this game is awesome and more people need to find out about it but still???

Is the increased 20% of bosse's HP for hard mode only?
The ReadMe file doesn't really specify what changes the hard mode version has, but it does make it seem like both versions have the 20% increased boss HP. Maybe they thought the original amount was too easy, even for the regular version?

There was another update a few days ago, apparently the bug persisted. But the author's pretty sure they got it now. Upgrading is recommended. Get v1.2 here.

It's a minor annoyance for sure, but on the plus side getting these bugs out of the way now will ensure a smoother roll-out for the DX color edition of the hack.
Uhh read the description. I updated it to 1.2 the day 1.2 came out

Oh hell yeah. I came here to grab the original game rom to patch, so this is very convenient. I've been waiting for this hack to come out a long time and am super excited to play it.

does the vita remake count or no?
i always thought the GB version is a very dark game and I love it so much but the vita / android version is so colourful and happy and all the enemies who are out to murder you are super cute, it just doesnt fit. i think the GBA remake is quite interesting as a game and not bad but for me it will always be the original GB one because with all the limited shit you have on the GB my brain would fill out the blanks just like you imagine stuff in a book, that is why i love old school games where they simply could not show everything unlike modern games that leave nothing to the imagination

The latest stable one v0.10.5, but the audio output kind of sucks. It keeps crackling and popping even on GB games. It doesn't really matter what you set the audio buffer size to either. Maybe the v0.11 beta would do better? From the development builds right here.

@Erik Óptero Best Mod Rage Burner recommends the emulator BGB for Game Boy games. mGBA is better for GBA instead since they focus more on that and their development on GB and GBC is behind compared to it. mGBA is also heavier and more demanding so it doesn't work well on older hardware. You can still use those same bios files with BGB but I've not used it personally so I dunno how to set it up. If he recommended it then it must be a pretty solid emulator. You can find it here

Me: thx a lots again, bro, :d¡¡ You are saving my PC from being thrown to the trash, lol, x'd/<3. I didn't know about BGB and its current 86x support but I'm going to try it, :'). Greetings from the third world, ^-^/.

I always feel icky about the fact that this game has 3 different titles. Marketed under Mystic Quest in PAL regions, it gets confused for Mystic Quest for the SNES - this is the way I learned it as a kid and it took years to unlearn this. Or the US Final Fantasy name... which for years made me mistake this game for one of the 3 SaGa titles that were clumsily also sold under FF. YUCK! And even in Japan it mentioned FF in the subtitle in order to generate more sales. I make it a habit to rename each of the game's files to their respective Seiken Densetsu title. This I just call: Seiken Densetsu - Embers of Mana.
The original file name of "Embers of Mana" is sufficient enough tho. "Mana" you know. Like, I've always thought of it as the Mana series. The renamed version of the first game in the (rather shitty 3d remake) is Adventures of Mana, then Secret of Mana, Trials of Mana, etc. I like manga/anime and always have but my brain tends to remember English titles better than Romaji spellings. Even tho Mana is not the correct translation of it, I think it's a good localized title for the series. Sacred Sword Legend is a lame series name tbh. You can call it whatever of course, but I think Ok Impala done a good job deciding on that name. It even sounds like it would be a good official title. Better than the official ones actually

Mystic Quest

Mystic Quest has always been one of my fav GB games. It is so amazing and it is a shame that there are not more games like this so I will see this is a spin off I have always wished existed. How does this game hold up? So it is like a brand new game using the same assets in the same universe?

Took a bit of fiddling around but I found out how to get it to work in mGBA like in that first GIF screenshot with the palette and border for Super Game Boy. Here's the settings to do and all the bios files that mGBA uses
