He's got a point to a extent, but he's being a elitist sperg at the same time, so it's more proper to say he's making a mountain out of a molehill and is trying to be a, pardon the curse, a dick about it.

Another way to put it, he's getting overwhelmed with bug requests from linux users due to a bad user made scripts, made his own installer script but tried to lock down the installer (NOT the program ittself, the installer script, AUR and arch don't care if you put a script in for proprietary software for the most part unless it's a virus or something) with a proprietary license, which goes against the AUR's modus operandi and breaks their TOS, so they denied it.
Now he's getting angry over arch linux not letting him do it his way when it's one of the simplest and childish complaints to have, i should point out that private corperations also use the AUR and don't make their aur script's proprietary, as there's literally nothing to hide in the install script unless you want to add a virus or spyware.

They're always the same people, complaining that their installation methods and proprietary scripts cause bugs in programs and expect EVERYONE to support their custom builds.

Because of people like these pigs, we can't have anything nice and functional.

Also I think he's tired of dealing with support for Linux, since it's fragmented and unstable, for example with Wayland problems and other things.
But since it's his project and he has a tight grip, there's little people willing to help I think.

Honestly i'd be fine with him just saying he doesn't want to support linux anymore, heck he'd have probably gotten less heat if he said that and let someone officially fork it, tbh now that duckstation is proprietary i don't trust his version anyway.

EDIT: Ignore my last statements, my personal opinions aside, some have claimed that fairly recently it was confirmed, so for the sake of being nice and not potentially speaking ill of the dead, i will concede this, true or not, as the dead should always be shown respect.

But nobody has the skills or interest, or just prefer to do their own.

If i'm being honest, duckstation really doesn't "need" updates anymore, so it feels kind of pointless in the first place.

Fair enough, but in the long run he'd be able to drop linux support and it will probably work through wine anyway, i run melonDS through wine instead of the official linux version because the linux version has bugs not in the windows version.

I don't know why emulator devs in particular go so nuts. I know other kinds of developers also sometimes end up with weird god complexes and do unhinged things but it seems particularly common amongst emu devs. Byuu's attitude was even more ridiculous because bsnes was kind of shitty to use most of the time it existed.

It's their mark on history. They don't want to be remembered for a shitty emulator, but I would rather be remembered for that than for being a hissy fit drama queen who had a meltdown every time someone disagreed with me or some such nonsense

shame he has to act like this. i enjoy using duckstation because i get to set cover images and click once to run the game and i was thinking of making the change to linux after w10 ends. this is pretty disappointing.

Byuu's suicide was recently confirmed

He had some insane fixation on a file format no one liked, and a devotion to cycle accuracy that was forward-thinking but not really practical for most end-users at the time.

From what it sounds like, this is the Duckstation dev taking issue with a community with a lot of let's call them 'bad actors' in it.

I remember asking about an issue on the discord channel about a crash (while a game is running, ému crashes if you click check for updates, fixed ever since) and he mentions that all those bugs stemmed from the person responsible from porting the UI from Linux.
He is also not fond of the Wayland chaos.
He is an experienced programmer for sure and his issues are valid but did not expect that it would come to this

Near didn't fake their suicide. Stop parroting the lies of Kiwi Farms shitbags who harrased and stalked them and then refused to take responsibility for causing their death.

There's quite a bit of history here with the developer's frustration with Linux users and open source in general. Between libretro forking Duckstation to create Swanstation, him changing the license (possibly illegally) to a rather restrictive one prevent such behavior, then growing frustrated when users would complain about issues in their unofficial builds -- unofficial because they can't use his now-proprietary build scripts. I'm unclear on whether he's just threatening to remove Linux support, or it's actually happening in the coming days.

between 2020 and 2023 this guy said that he was going to discontinue duckstation permanently due to harassment and such also he doesn't want to make duckstation before because emulation is illegal or such to him. i always believe that he's just being intolerant for no reason especially if it don't qualify as one. check out mr.surjano for more details.

He had some insane fixation on a file format no one liked, and a devotion to cycle accuracy that was forward-thinking but not really practical for most end-users at the time.

From what it sounds like, this is the Duckstation dev taking issue with a community with a lot of let's call them 'bad actors' in it.

If true, RIP, but you'll have to forgive me for not being 100% on believing it, that said i will retract my statement to be fair to the possibility it is true and let the dead rest in peace, even if i have my doubts (i was a bit more aware of that drama which is why i would believe he would, but again i have a rule of not speaking ill of the dead so i'll stop mentioning byuu).

I have a bit more info on that than i'm willing to share here so i have my doubts, but in case i am wrong i will cease discussing it, like i said, respect for the dead and all that.

Kiwi farms is a interesting place, best way i could describe that site, didn't know byuu was put in a thread there, first and last time i went to that site was well over a decade ago, didn't know it was still alive, not really into the internet drama and "lolcow" stuff.
