News Duckstation dev blocks Arch Linux users, threatens to completely remove Linux support

There's quite a bit of history here with the developer's frustration with Linux users and open source in general. Between libretro forking Duckstation to create Swanstation, him changing the license (possibly illegally) to a rather restrictive one prevent such behavior, then growing frustrated when users would complain about issues in their unofficial builds -- unofficial because they can't use his now-proprietary build scripts. I'm unclear on whether he's just threatening to remove Linux support, or it's actually happening in the coming days.
well, you certainly can't change the license of already-published software builds/versions
whatever tf aseprite did is legally white though

Something like that happen to Flycast emulator for iOS users were complaining and harassing even sending death threats.
I find it rather amusing people think that harassing and sending death threats will make people listen and work faster or harder or do as they say. I seen this shit with No man´s sky, EVE online and other games. If I was a dev for something and I got threats to harassment I would just say well F you then your not getting shit.

I honestly hope that he cuts the Linux support/build and tell people that they can F-ing make their own damn emulator if they ain´t happy.

This is about bugs reported on githubs bug tracker that are caused by unsupported install methods, not death threats and harassment.

Who uses Linux anyway ?
Does people still only using a Windows? ¿¿¿Realllyyyy??? lol

After Windows Vista fiasco lots of people keep hating Windows OS because since Windows 7 Microsoft couldn't develop a decent one and Microsoft 7 was really not "okay" to begin with due to permission issues and all. Relatively only decent Windows Microsoft released was between Windows 98 - XP. It make people just say "ugh" and never use Windows again so hard it became a common sense not to only use Windows at this point.

After the BS of how American government using their products to gather information from people it caused a great privacy issues that made people leave Microsoft for good.

When it comes to AMD GPUs, the whole AMD community always cried how bad Windows drivers are so they have a better time using AMD GPUs on Linux. It mattered a lot when it came to playing games on emulators via OpenGL. In that context Linux's open source nature made Linux a playground for people to even develop drivers to suck the juice of their hardwares dry. In that context Linux really feels powerful to many.

Linux became a bigger thing than it was anymore. Users simply likes to customise their OS to their liking, and having an ease of use by just writing commands without dealing with forced updates, permission issues and driver problems. For example when you format your Windows PC you gotta find a way to install your programs back while on Linux you do the same by copy paste commands and that's it baby. You are ready to roll lol.

Windows sucks so hard people feel they have no choice but to use Linux, that's why it make them force developers for decent Linux support that sometimes turn into personal attacks and even death threats. In that context this topic sometimes happens to many developers and even video game companies to indie game developers.

never said it was I replayed to another topic that said shit like that happen for others. Point is gonna throw a fit I can understand he wanna drow Linux sport them. Shit will be done or fixed when they are and not because people are nagging.

I use Linux for my retro projects, especially on a Raspberry Pi. Unfortunately, some users don’t respect the work of others — particularly the developers who pour their hearts into these projects without asking for any money. As a result, we see phenomena like this. I hope the emulator continues to be available, but if it’s no longer supported, I want to express a big thanks to Stenzek for everything he has done so far.

i personally find linux too different, ive used it multiple times in the past, i know how to use it, everything worked i never had issues, and it's simple of course.

...but it's not windows, which i've used since win95 and never really had issues with it
practically everyone i know in real life uses windows and has never really had issues other than computer illiterate people.
i wouldn't say "nobody uses windows" my entire university i see people with windows PCs,
usually it's the mac people complaining "oh i can't do this, oh this doesn't work" (my computer science classes it's always the mac people with issues LOL)
I game way too much and majority of my games i don't think work on linux
before i get flamed at, linux is good too, and i understand why people use it over bloated windows,
i'm just REALLY used to windows since my childhood

Okay?

This thread is not about sharing your subjective personal experiences with Linux. Go somewhere else for that.

Lol. From what I've seen of Stenzak, he's always been a huge drama queen, throwing hissy fits over every little thing. Good riddance.
Yeah, it seems like a few years back someone made a simple suggestion for an option for DuckStation
(I may be misremembering this, sorry) and he had an absolute meltdown, bitched and complained about people making suggestions. Again, dude needs to pull the stick out of his ass

Might be fun to publish an open source program and completely ignore all support requests...
I think that making something open source and making something compatible to other OSes are two vastly different things.

Also even if there are requests porting from one OS to another isn't like a finger snap. It's basically asking to do more work on top of the main one.

Although the reaction of that guy is a bit petty, simply saying "no, I don't have time to do that" would've sufficed.

I'm not well versed in Linux but I think that even console ports of PC games are hard to do.

Yes, is because he is tired and has bad temp.

He disabled the public issues on github.
Also the packagers keep broking things and people go to complain to him.
Then people go to his discord, some are ignorant or unreasobale, and sometimes even threaten him.
But he has such short fuse, and is doing most of the work, even if he is like that tries to do all the support he can.
But it keeps getting to him.
Plus some controversial decisions.
And also there are companies that profit from his work without contributing back and don't even publish the source modifications.

Yes that's a good summary about the situation.

From my understanding the AUR doesn't care if his program is proprietary, it however isn't as keen on the fact that he wanted to make it's AUR proprietary, as the AUR by definition is open source, so him wanting to make the installer script proprietary went against the AUR TOS.

Seems like the easiest solution would be to just license his own build script under the BSD license. I don't understand why he would throw a fit instead of doing that. It's just a build script.
It's a good question, but apparently people explicitly asked him and he refused to allow it.

Never underestimate how many dumb people there are who think their keyboard rage is the fast path to results. Someone who worked on the lost Backyardigans pilot got harassed so bad they left social media for awhile. Rather than ask nicely if this person still had any footage they wanted to share the morons just started to harass and threaten them to RELEASE IT NAO! ::angrygenjin

Needless to say it pissed off the fandom quite a bit.

Nobody is being harrassed in this situation, though. Stenzak just faced the problem he helped to create and threw a hissy fit, as he is wont to do.

that was 1 kid doing that and the dev for flycast just blamed ios users as a whole

it fr looks like the dev just didnt want to continue apple support and this was the perfect time to do so without giving a real reason

The same happened on Duckstation's server, and I think it was the same kid.

Yeah sadly that´s to true it´s rather scary. But one thing I will say honestly when it comes to game relases I think companies should never announce them game until they have certain date in mind and they know they can deliver. Would save them allot of hassle from dumb people and rage.

Yes yes Hype sells games but honestly a good game sells no matter the hype. If a game is good it will sell allot just by words of mouth alone.
