The most impressive thing about this remake so far is that they managed to make Kiefer, the ugliest Toriyama character ever, look cute:

The Hero kind of reminds me of the style for the DQ5 movie to, which I don't mind at all.

I like this interview, it all sounds very promising to me so far:

I won't play this game if we can't make the main kid take off medieval pyjama shit outfit and wear decent clothes lolol.

They're already teasing new outfits (DQ8 and DQ11) as pre-order bonuses, and in the 3DS remake you actually changed outfits when switching vocations, both in the field and in battle, so I assume it'll be the same here.

The costumes were one of my favourite parts of XI s, so here's hoping!

I'm really glad there were a good bunch to choose from, especially in 11S where you kept the appearance after unlocking it instead of it being hard-tied to the armor piece, because the default clothes for almost all of them were so dull imo, except like Rab and Veronica.
Loved the "desert" themed one for Erik.

Yeah, pretty much everyone had significantly better alternate costumes in XI s!

Just generally speaking, more games should let you keep what visual style you want with gear or armour sets. It's so annoying having to wear something you think looks worse just because the stats or buffs might be better

Yeah it's a shame when the default outfits are boring, especially in a series known for colorful characters (and also a series where you're used to it usually being just your weapon that changes appearance). Idk why Toriyama used both so washed out palettes, and so unrealistic colors at the same time. 11 Hero and Jade's default outfits make me want to barf.

I don't think they look too bad in some of the 2D promo art, but yeah, in game they definitely look washed out. Also, there's a lot of red & green amongst the XI party in hindsight. They don't feel too varied in colour schemes

It's probably just a bunch of small peeves combining into one big one for me, which makes it stand out a lot more than it probably does. Toriyama is a huge inspiration to me as an artist but I feel like his humans became much worse the last decade or so until he croaked. First time I took notice was in DQ9 where the characters were all skinny but the line thickness is consistent all the time, which kind of makes it all look messy, and he never really dropped that way of drawing since then.
Also just think that green and purple is a bad color combination, and feels extra weird on the traveling gear worn by a fantasy bumpkin. But the Hero's design is just the tip of that amalgam of the aforementioned bunch of small peeves. His straight hair and ugly trenchcoat just makes him look docile and stiff, I think it's a real shame.

It's not really a huge issue though, just makes for a slightly less interesting fantasy adventure when the main cast are all mainly of similar build and "civilian" type outfits with lame colors.

Yeah, the green boots really stand out ::sailor-embarrassed And purple being considered a more royal or fancy colour does make it a bit strange that the DQ XI protag wears it.

I really wish there was a version of DQ8 that combined the non-handheld experience, visuals and sound of the PS2 version, with the quality-of-life features from the 3DS version (I’m kind ambivalent on the new playable characters tbh).

I don’t even really mind random encounters, but visible monsters are almost always better, and displaying the progress graph for the skill points makes it feel less scary to put points in something you’re unsure of.

I’m currently playing the PS2 version because I still prefer it in general, made it to Argonia today. Mostly grinded alchemy pot stuff and explored this session.

I'm still surprised Squenix never got to just make an HD port of Dragon Quest VIII with the FFX/X-2 HD remaster QoL (such as faster battles).

Even a fresh coat of paint over the PS2 assets rather than remaking everything could've still bbeen good.

Err... DQ was fine imo, there should be a "danger meter" like in SMT because visible enemies on the map worked better for Tales of games.

honestly dq11 lost me entirely during act 3, absolutely hated where the story was going and felt like my time was being wasted, did really enjoy the first half of the game though, as simple as the combat is (I prefer SMTs combat)

am planning on going through the start of the series from release order, but that depends on which games I could find retranslation patches for

V and VIII most likely could get a HD port if VII sells well. VIII with the 3DS content and the PS2 version of V could get localized. Unless they also have plans to do a remake of V

IX is the only one with a big question mark

It feels weird knowing that the "modern" DS remakes of the second trilogy has become "retro" so that you cannot really access it unless you're owning a New 2DS XL.

Despite the kiloton of spin-offs (and re-releases of I-II & III) I feel like it's hard to be a DQ fan who wanna play the games (legally).

Yes, there are (weird) mobile ports still accessible, yes there are DQ 1 2 3 on the Switch (twice if you count the weird 2D ones) yet I feel like you need to do more efforts to get the post-Erdrick trilogy games.

So far:
  1. if you have a 3DS you can play Dragon Quest 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 thanks to backward compatibility.
  2. If you own a PlayStation 2 you could still theoretically play Dragon Quest 4, 5, 7 and 8 thanks to the PS1 remakes to the cost of having half of them in Japanese.

IX is good on paper but it being limited to the DS for a mainline entry (which was a first) made it clearly shows its age and limited its content.
