Dragon Quest Megoothread

The only mainline game I didn't pick up was X, because of the whole Japanese only MMO thing.
You don't miss anything because the whole point of the game is being MMO, not to be a game to enjoy and also have fun with friends. However there is no MMO I liked for they only care about being time wasters instead of having meaningful content to have a good time, DQX is the worst MMO I played. It has a generic main story, generic stuff, generic MMO quests and generic gameplay so nothing worthy to play in it. It's only for die-hard fans that couldn't get enough of all the DQ they played over and over again so they wanna spend their time in a DQ MMO. Main situation of the game is so lame from the start you may don't wanna play the game, to "fix this" game make you wanna play and endure boring dramas and finally when you "fix yourself" you realize the game is not really that good as its story is the most generic shit possible they didn't bother making an "okay game".

However for a friend once I checked it had English translation project that translated its launcher and main dialogues enough to play the game, but side content wasn't translated which required real-time translator or something in your own expense. The only other issue it has is finding an ok Japanese VPN and after every time you play you need to switch Japanese VPN after your account is frozen for "suspicious activity" so you bother unlocking it by wrestling with Japanese emails and Japanese website of the game all the time. Because of this my friend gave up playing it especially because "it doesn't worth it for game is not good enough" and I made his DQX experience a meme lolol:

However I'm mostly bothered by how suck it is to be free player and simple side things takes insane amounts to do like to change one piece of armor's color you need to grow flowers for 1 week real-time or pay too much money for simple features. I was like "ain't nobody got time for that!!!!" and dropped playing the game. No decent stuff to wear for my superstar character for being a free user anyway!!!

No, 3ds dq11 had a really unique, distinct and more chibi artstyle. It’s Japan only too.

I wouldn't be too keen to play it as an MMO. I think in Japan, they did or are going to, release a version of X that is more like a standard non-MMO DQ game. I'd love to have that version localised

I love how that version looks.
The pic they posted was low quality, thats why I asked.
Might be the Switch version?

I played the base game story with the English translation thing like two years ago. Apart from a few quirks you get used to quick enough I had a great time with it. The base story has a really cool thing where you play as a human but get transformed into one of the playable fantasy races. I picked the elves and really enjoyed their storyline too.
Though you get to play as a human later on and then I stuck to it. The combat has a really cool weight mechanic where tanks in heavy armor literally push against the enemy to prevent them from attacking backliners. Loved that feature.

The English speaking community is very helpful and friendly too.

That does sound interesting. I might have to try it out sometime

It was a bit tricky to set up, but once it’s up and running it’s really straightforward, and I’m sure the English client and general translation work etc has only gotten better since I played.

It’s definitely a unique beast as far as DQ goes, but I recommend anyone who’s a fan of the series to check it out. Especially since so much of it is free in the trial version.
Just remember to use a VPN so the game doesn’t kick you out. I used some free thing and it worked swimmingly.

Yes, "Dragon Quest X Offline" as a remake game released that is more like an old turn based game that has childish elements as if "little kids" were target audiance, however DQX MMO has tons of "story archs" while this remake only has the first or first few or something and last few of them or something sold as a DLC which is a scam move, so naturally it's a rather tool to leave the story hanged and ended absurdly before it really start to make people pay for DQX MMO by offering offline version players to start to MMO version with extra benefits. I don't think these greedy people would release an honest Dragon Quest X offline mode experience that has full feature, and they wouldn't care to translate it due to unnecessary expense on budget for them. It's for Japanese people so only for them to experience. Yet again it doesn't have an "ok" story to experience anyway. It only has the phantom pain of a DQ game lol. And level limit is a bitch that naturally and eventually will force you to buy the game to deal with rest of the game.

I love DQ very much, I`m hug fan of the series and my favorite game are Dragon Quest Journey of cursed king and Dragon Quest XI S:-)
I remember playing my first DQ game and that was Dragon Quest Journey of cursed king on PS2, I used to own PS2 and really enjoy playing it, that was before 3DS come out.
After that I played many DQ games and I just feel in love with DQ XI S, it have beautiful artwork and story are amazing. I love the soundtrack aswell.

Only DQ game I've played is VIII on PS2 with the official guide.
Great game in every sense (I've enjoyed it in graphics, music, gameplay, huge world to explore, characters), but still it didn't made me a fan of the series.
In a FF vs DQ battle I think I am on FF side (sorry DQ fans!)

DQ IX is one of my favourite games ever, it´s criminally underrated.
I fell in love with the demo of DQ XI, hope to play it someday along with the 3ds version.
I also liked DQ VIII on the Ps2, just not as much as IX.
Im playing the SNES version of DQ I rn, glad to see DQ has already been peak since ever.

I went into a big Dragon Quest kick after playing EarthBound circa 2011. I also played XI when it came out. My outlook on the series is not hopeful. My long standing issues with the series are probably here to stay such as casino games gating off good equipment, and low experience wins from enemies that aren't metal slimes, which may as well be another casino mechanic. Also silent protagonists with no personality, and their games rarely come to PC.

The things I do like about the series seem to be "modernising". We'll probably switch to real time combat, the new limit break system is bad, and since IX the series switched to the quest slop strategy, with most of the time being taken away from the main campaign and diverted into shit quests.

My favourite is DQIX despite so many people bash it for "bad graphics", "bad trivial handheld console game, it can't be the main game in the series", "dual screens are not how you play DQ", "it's too grindy" and some shit I heard a lot but the game's story is solid, whatever you do in the game is meaningful, it has fun situations and most importantly you can create your character + your whole party even in decent detail. It really doesn't have simple "bad guy being bad for being bad" generic shit nor just a generic revenge story which is very unusual in good way in the context of a DQ game. Each step in the story was like standalone video game idea of its own. People underestimate my beloved DQIX too much me angry I wanna kill them with coin shower while I spin like Michael Jackson under magical spotlights heee heeeeeee!!!! lolol

I'm not super hopeful just because there hasn't been much of any information about DQ XII since that got announced ages ago. There've really only been spin-offs & remakes since then. I wonder if a switch to real-time combat would make it feel too much like DQ Heroes?

The DS was great for RPGs. Especially DQ IX. Even my favourite Dragon Ball game, Attack of the Saiyans, was on the OG DS. It's a shame that people do dismiss games with older art styles, but what can ya do?

Even I stand corrected that NDS shouldn't be underestimated when I initially thought it's a trvial BS device. Lots of my favourite RPGs are on NDS:

- DQIX
- Radiant Historia
- Ni no Kuni
- Metal Max 3

These days I play these 2 games and they seem to be solid RPGs that I may add to my favourite RPGs list:

I especially liked Black Sigil so far.

Interesting. How have I not played the DS Ni No Kuni? ::homerscream The DS/3DS is also how I've been playing most Dragon Quest games. I have IV through to IX on DS/3DS

strange i thought FF and DQ are pretty much the same, but DQ sticks to the classic gameplay
in other words if you hate FF1,2,3 you'd have a hard time playing old DQ games and maybe newer ones.

I always think DQ3 is the best game, i've played many versions of it from NES, GB, SNES, android, and it's 2DHD version.
this game is what i use to measure who's a DQ fan or not
2DHD definitely became my new measurement, as it's much more modern with voice acting, autosaves, and waypoints.

i highly recommend Dragon Quest 11 if you don't like the older games (1-7)
and absolutely the S definitive version, its hugely better than the original
it's what a real modern DQ game is to me.
even non-DQ fans should enjoy it (if they like RPGS in the first place, including FF)
i feel like if someone does not like DQ11, they aren't JRPG fans at all
it's mostly casual (at the start) and also leaves enough challenge to make it just right by the end.
but also feature the HARDEST postgame of the entire series! especially on S definitive

DQ7 is the test of "how much do you like DQ" it's both the longest and most difficult (on ps1)
even the 3ds remake being much easier and shorter (they cut so much time wasting crap)
took me past 100 hours to beat everything including the post game boss
i don't hate it, its just ... LONG to where you prob not finish it due to its length.

this is all incredibly Biased as i like old classic JRPGS, and class changing a WHOLE lot (i love FF5, DQ3, all the bravely default games for example)

has this ever been translated to english in any way?
i've already played DQ11, 11 definitive S, both 2d and 3d full playthroughs, and didn't realize it's that different on 3ds!
