Dragon Ball thread

Imo, OG Broly is like the worst Dragon Ball character ever invented, he's like every bad or misunderstood aspect/trope of DB in one single character. Just angry screaming for no discernible reason and completely without motivation.

HOWEVER, Super Broly is like one of the best characters they ever made. All they had to do was make him sad (and cute) instead of a temper tantrum pissbaby sadist lol

Though as far as simple "chaos for the sake of it" characters I did like Janemba a lot.
I think the OG Broly is iconic and his movies (Barring Bio-Broly obviously) are revered for a reason; they have some of the best action set-pieces the series had seen up to that point. I completely agree with you that Super Broly is way better though, and his movie is arguably the best Dragon Ball movie ever made.

I was always a Tree of Might fan myself, I thought Turles was a great villain. I just loved the whole idea of him essentially being a what-if scenario based around if Goku never hit his head on that rock and stayed true to his Saiyan roots.

I didn't grow up with Broly (I'm a manga andy) so yeah I think the impact was lost on me. I haven't seen all movies actually, but the ones I've seen do range from excellent to just abysmal.

My favorite is easily World's Strongest (followed by Super Broly, Super Hero and Battle of Gods) and was the one I grew up on.
The coreography is just so damn good.
The way he like turns off the kaioken while somersaulting to turn it back on when jumping is just *chef's kiss*

Yeah, World's Strongest is so good. As you said; best fight choreography in the series, I don't know who they had on the team when they made that, but they never really hit that level again. Honestly, those first 3 movies (Dead Zone, World's Strongest and Tree of Might) are some of my favorites, I was a bit surprised to find a lot of DBZ fans don't think too highly of them.

I have to say; while I did like the movie overall, I did think Super Hero had a lot of problems in terms of narrative and characterization (Especially Piccolo). Over reliance on nostalgia and the recycling of ideas has been a massive problem with modern Dragon Ball, and while I think DBS Broly handled it in a great way, I think Super Hero was a really bad offender when it came to that. As much as I like Orange Piccolo and Beast Gohan, you do kinda have to take a step back and realize that the whole movie was essentially a retelling/best-of compilation of the Android and Cell sagas.

I was too enraptured by the great silly Toriyama feeling it had, I was even okay with Raid Boss Cell just being a weird interpretation of him, rather than an actual memberberry. I think it and Super Broly kind of coexist as loveletters to both Classic-era and Z-era DB respectively in some ways.

See that I actually do agree with. I loved how Cell Max was this giant monster version of Cell whose appearance was based on his goofy looking second form (Since it was apparently Toriyama's favorite version of Cell).

I just think a lot of the Piccolo stuff at the start of the film was really inconsistent with his character. I really liked how they brought up how none of the characters pride as fighters would allow them to use Shenron to wish away any of the villains, but then in the same breath Piccolo wants to use the dragon to make himself artificially stronger? Like, I get that's one of Toriyama's weird writing quirks (Establishing certain characters train everyday of their lives, but they never actually seem to get stronger, barring Goku and Vegeta of course), but that whole moment just felt really out of character for him.

IDK, its been a while since I watched the movie but I liked Broly because of his sheer rage and badassery. Sometimes its fine to be simple. But yeah, I liked the DBZ movies. Garlic Jr, World's Strongest, Tree of Might, Lord Slug, Broly, Cooler, all of it.

I often forgot about Broly because I remember that he had a gripe against Goku because he screamed too much as a baby next to his cradle but maybe I have bad memories.

What was the "legendary Saiyan" sub-plot? Was it in the manga? Was Broly the legendary one or ultimately Goku was?

I'll never get tired of watching these:

8:00 "That was me bitch!" LOL

5:43 LOL

Even DBZ ran out of steam half way through. Any show that goes on for 500+ episodes will likely have that problem. The first 200 or so episodes were solid Shonen anime fun, but after that they got very fillerish and repetitive.
I got into DBZ after the Cell arc and enjoyed it a lot, even though most of the episodes have tons of the token problem of DBZ of just standing around doing nothing. That being said, I do not like Kai at all

I just watched Broly: The Legendary Super Saiyan for the first time a week ago and...I found Broly to be disappointing.

I would love to watch the original US dub for DB. It was only like 13 episodes and they sold it on DVD for a time, but I haven't seen it since it would've aired here in like 1995. Curious to hear what it sounds like and if they changed much, because I really don't remember.

I actually remember watching the original DB Funi dub from 95 back when it first aired in syndication. Even had the Goku toy for it. There was also one done by Harmony Gold that's a little bit more hard to come by from the 80s (they also did a pilot episode for Dr Slump which is absolutely atrocious)

We carried this when I worked at the anime shop. I don't know why I didn't buy it then. ::cirnoshrug

my only gripe with the newer broly movie is how they made him look really generic. broly (especially when in base form) had such a unique and awesome look for a saiyan, no idea why they changed that.

Still better than DB Evolution.
I tried to get my dad to watch DBZ for years. I was like, "it's guys hollering and blowing shit up, you'll like it" and for SOME reason he started with DB Evolution? I watched it with him and had to keep going, "no, the actual series isn't like this" but the best I could ever impart upon him was the existence of Vegeta, who he referred to as Fajita.

What kills me is that a DB movie should've been a kung-fu themed one. It was just so obvious considering that Toriyama liked those movies and Jackie Chan was one of his inspirations.

A Journey to the West movie is better than nothing.

Hot take: The Ocean Dub Rock The Dragon collection and then Toonami/Funimation dub with Bruce Faulconer OST are peak DBZ, filler, OVAs, and movies included!
