PC DOOM or Quake?

I've only played Quake 1 but I absolutely loved it. DOOM however, I have beaten all of the classic games (minus Master Levels and 64) and 2016. Despite only playing Quake 1, I have to say that both are equally good. Both have addicting gameplay and fantastic atmosphere. Quake is probably better in that department, but DOOM is more colorful and diverse with its artstyle. Like MAP 30 in TNT you go to a Pharaoh's tomb and the level itself is just the perfect mood. Somber music playing, you go through hitscan hell, trigger a cacodemon trap, and you have the textures showing some Egyptian history. I don't think Quake has anything like that. TNT as a whole is a bit weak but it has some bangers like MAP 30. So I'll say both are great even if it is a cop out answer.

Both. Neither series is better than the other to me. Both series are modded heavily, especially the Doom Classics and Quake 1. They both scratch that Boomer Shooter itch inside of me. I also love Quake 3s Arena setup. You can't lose with either game series.

Loved duke nukem more than doom, at least I played more of it. played Quake when 2 came out and was blown away despite all the brownish I didn't really notice at the time, considering the shit resolutions of the monitor. But then I played Unreal and I just couldn't get enough. So doom or quake I would say unreal.

Both are great. The Achilles heel I can find is the multiplayer. Sure, Quake has an awesome multiplayer... but DOOM? Oh, boy... thank God for mod support.

Quake for the shooting, yes, but also the controls. What a way to implement 3D movement on your first outing. Just one of those games that did it right immediately. Also the vibes, soundtrack, and visuals are more to my taste. I wouldn't mind more colours though. Still, the custom mapping community keeps on giving.

Well, if you take the series as a whole, then DOOM definitely wins. As much as I prefer vanilla Quake OG to vanilla Doom, Doom has more entries, more mods and the only real criticism I can think of against the series is that the Doom 3 shotgun sucks, and I can't think of anything else. Quake I, II & III are all great, but I never really cared for Quake IV. It's one of those games that doesn't suck, but for whatever reason I hate it and find it tedious and boring (another example of that being Wolfenstein '09). Still, Quake I is fucking awesome, the gameplay and design are peak iD, and it has the bonus of NIN providing the official soundtrack. But DOOM as a series wins out.

I watched this video yesterday and recalled this thread.
Warning it is a nearly 3 hours video (1h14 talking about Quake, the rest are about the expansions and the nightdive remaster)

My preference is towards DOOM cause I grew up playing it, Quake is still awesome, but I don't have nostalgia for it cause I never had a computer that could run it until a decade ago. Also Quake doesn't have anywhere near the amount of custom content that DOOM has so that's another point in its favor for me.

First of all, how dare you? That’s like asking me to pick between my two kids.

But, I say Doom, but by a HAIR. The thing is, I prefer to hop back into Doom. Whether it’s Vanilla, modded, GZ, or Doom on a freakin’ PSP: I love Doom. With my whole soul. And the series itself has not one bad title. Not one. There may be titles you don’t rock with! But none of them are “bad”.

Quake though? Aesthetically, it was EVERYTHING it needed to be. It’s the grungiest grunge game to ever grunge and that was PERFECT. I heard it once described as the “adult Doom” and I would believe it. My big thing is how it doubles in, at least early on, with gothic elements. And then later on doubles back in on very space marine adjacent imagery. It’s also a game where, no matter how old it gets, they did such a good job with how every aspect of the shooting feels that it will always rock. You can be playing the damn SEGA SATURN VERSION and you’ll still feel the sheer power of its shooting gameplay. And the decision to go deathmatch later on was a brilliant move, because great PC games never have empty lobbies. People will FOREVER keep playing. Why? Because it’s freaking FUN, man.

Play Doom. If you like what you played, play Quake. Don’t limit yourself to just one. Be awesome and play both.

Absolutely this. Both are great games that I love, but I prefer Doom just a little bit more. Especially when we consider playing custom map packs for both. Doom map packs are cool for the combat gameplay and the challenge, while Quake maps have an indisputable VIBE about them, with awesome aesthetics and really cool exploration, so much that some mappers make stages without any enemies. But then, if you consider the multiplayer, Quake wins hands down. Both games are great in their own ways.

Listen. One game has a good rocket launcher with good range and a solid explosion that feels relatively satisfying to use.

The other is Quake. With the Quake rocket launcher.

This is your brain on the Quake rocket launcher.

Both. Excited for The Dark Ages. There's a specific thing that they've been teasing (if you know you know) and I'm just wondering if it's gonna cross the two series over. They already did mission packs in the Quake remasters that connect the Strogg plot with the Lovecraftian plot. I feel like Dark Ages might double down on that idea, and I'm for it.

And yeah, Doom 3 and Quake 4 are valid idc kiss my rear.

Quake should have a new game like the new doom ones.

quake champions is kinda dead now, only quake live remains.

I like both a lot, but DOOM is king. My fav game franchise period at this point.

Would love to say both, but if I had a gun to my head, I would go with Quake 1.
Also I just recently realized that the most of the enemies shooting projectiles or just lunging at you is probably what really makes me like it more than the second one. Playing on nightmare feels a bit bullet-hellish in the way you get to dodge things flying at you all over the place. I just like it. I'd say it's a timeless masterpiece even.

Tbh I haven't finish playing quake 1 so biased opinion.
At the moment, I rather pick Doom cuz the weapons feel better to use idk
also nothing more satisfying than shredding a horde of pinkies or cacodemons grouped up in a hallway with a chainsaw.

Love them both - obviously - but I think I prefer Quake from a purely mechanical level. It's hard to really gauge with how Quake 1's campaign kind of sucks compared to DOOM (at least the first episode) - and this is without getting into all the fan maps/mods/etc which DOOM easily wins as good as Quake's scene is - but Quake just feels more fun to play moment to moment for me.

I'm a certified Quake shill, i love Doom and all but no FPS game can come close to the pleasure i have playing Quake games, both single player and multiplayer. The aesthetics for me are too perfect and go right up my alley, and the fast af gameplay specially on multiplayer is something that made me addicted since i was a kid watching my uncle play it on his PC. I can't see a future of myself not bhoping/strafejumping straight into a server or try to do a few runs on Quake 1 just for fun, it doesn't matter if there is like only 10 people left playing them lmao

Even though I love Doom, I'll always prefer Quake.
