Does anyone else wish KH would retire Sora by now?

Don't get me wrong, I like Sora, but I feel like the games have taken him about as far as he could go. I think the problem is that he doesn't seem to have changed much over the course of the series. By the time of Dream Drop Distance, his friendly, happy-go-lucky shtick has worn thin - at least, for me. His character has become stagnant.

An idea I have for a later game is for Mickey and Ansem the Wise to start an academy for Keyblade wielders, giving it a school setting similar to something like Final Fantasy Type-0. The main character would be a student sent on missions to different worlds, giving the game a sort of mission-based structure. And to differentiate him from Sora, I would make him more of a Solid Snake-type, someone raised from childhood to be a highly efficient soldier. He'd be more reserved and socially awkward, but also confident and loyal to his friends from school. And his past, including his place of birth and his family, would be shrouded in mystery.

plot is too written to revolve around him so far. i do desperately want kh4 to be the final part of his story so he can sit on the beach with kairi all day.

I don't think it would be the worst thing in the world if Kingdom Hearts actually ended. But failing that, yeah; they've taken Sora's story as far as it can naturally go.

Totally. I didn't really care for Roxas when KH2 first came out, mostly because KH1 ended on a cliffhanger, but that game would make way more sense if Roxas was the main character from start to finish. All the villains have a personal relationship with Roxas. The end of that game could have been Roxas merging with Sora, while he wrestled with his own identity the whole way through. The Organization wants him back, while his identity as a piece of Sora is constantly pulling him to surrender himself and his future. It could have made a really powerful moment when he accepts that what his heart truly wants is to be back where it belongs.

The way it is, though, anytime Sora meets a member of Organization XIII, they always recognize him and his relationship to Roxas, while he always responds with, "I don't know who you are, but I'm gonna stop you!" He has almost no stakes in the story other than being the hero and stopping bad guys. The first game was all about him growing, but every game since then has been him hitting bad guys with the keyblade because he's the good guy. Even Kairi, who has almost no part in most of the games, has grown as a person.

I was really hoping KH4 would move onto someone else and maybe have Sora be a party member, or show up in a Mickey, "Oh shit!" sort of fashion. As it stands, I like pretty much every other character besides Sora. He's just clueless and doesn't evolve as a person, while everyone else has.

That's another problem, she also stagnated after 2. Having her trained as a keyblade wielder was a total waste, all she does is get captured and KILLED. Also, don't really like her design in 3. Feels like a regression from the more mature design she had in 2 when she lets her hair down.

I love Sora

If they continues his character's course with no improvement, then sure. But I'd argue where set him up right now as of the latest entry demonstrate how they want to evolve and explore more of his character.

Sora has always been this very positive, impulsive, wear-his-heart-on-his-sleeve kinda guy who would easily let people in and put others ahead. He does this so much that he even swallowed his own sadness/frustration to put a smile on for his friends. This culminates in KH3 where he literally sacrificed his entire existence for Kairi.

With the way KH4 is right now, where's he all alone in a strange land with strange people, it set up the perfect circumstance to delve deeper into his thoughts and take him to a place where Sora can own up and come to term with his own feelings.
I hope he won't stop being the happy-go-lucky guy that I and many love though. Let Riku be the Square Enix cool, edgy, one-liner spouting guy and Sora remains the Disney bundle of positivity.
