Do young people still read books these days?

Well, I don't know if it's seen as uncool or whatever. Just as mentioned a lot of 18 to 25 year olds have incredibly short attention spans. I blame TikTok, yes, but I also blame some cartoons and kids' shows.

Think of shows like SpongeBob or similar ones with quick flashing colors and short scenes, more or less TikTok before TikTok. And also, cell phones. No, I'm not being that "Get off my lawn, you damn kids" girl, but a lot of it is simply due to parents plopping the kids in front of the free and almighty babysitter.

The TV, laptops, tablets, etc, from the start so Jr. will be quiet for 15 minutes while mommy finishes off her second box of wine for the day.

Modern technology being made to monopolize people attention spans is definitely the biggest part of the problem. I s2g, when I go outside it's like a zombie apocalypse some times. Ppl can't even walk their dogs without looking at their phones the whole time.

Also in the US, the literacy rate amongst young students is dropping drastically. I'm sure that has absolutely nothing to do with the continued lack of and withdrawal of federal and state funding /eyeroll

Funny you mention that. I saw a guy doing that very thing today. I was waiting for a burger at one of those food trailer places. The guy was literally walking his dog with his head down in his phone and fell right into a shallow stream of water along the road. Dog was fine, it was pretty funny.

A lot of that is lowering the score rating to pass on to the next grade, and no Child Left Behind BS. There's more to it, but that's more or less it. They want more students to pass so they can get more money the next term.

What it always boils down to is money. Who cares if the kids can read or write properly?
We need that Dosh

Don't forget sex, lot of the time it boils down to something as simple as "I'll Bang you to get this done"
Which usually ends up with blackmail

That ties in with money and power for me

Well yes TikTok is brain rot but there's still reading going on, mainly surface level, but reading and even old words come back still in tact of their original meaning like hipster, swagger, and demure even if they get meme usage words were mainly forgotten until some yuppie finds it and someone copies it and gives it traction.

We haven't lost the ability to sit down for hours on one thing, we've just be told it's boring and should do more and now have the excuse of a short attention span. In truth it's actually very easily to beat the idea on a micolevel but tech and people adsorbed has told us it's impossible so we stay glued in for hours more than try. But then again it comes down to parents on how they want to engage their child with the idea of reading. Do I sit down with my kid and read along with his finger on the page with mine or do I hand him a tablet to watch storybook videos so I can watch GOT far away from him? Obviously home is meant for the family to relax, why should I have to teach my child, that's what school is for and then be surprised come locked down and notice my child has reading issues as he's guessing the word than sounding out by phonics because the whole state threw money at a bullshit theory to avoid teaching the proper way because phonics was time consuming and slow and not fun for kids?

It's everyone failing to some degree but the problem is who's going to take the blame and I can already guess who's not going to take their share.

I can only speak for my own experience I don´t think young people read at all seeing they lack common sense and simple understand how the world works. I´m sure they all brain rot on tiktok and twitch.

Im not saying all young people but the ones I meat and talked with makes me question what we even teach them in school.

Kids don’t read anymore because they are spoiled with endless distractions and screens.
Mindless social media, and instant entertainment so they’ve become lazy and impatient.
Instead of picking up a good book, they would rather scroll through TikTok or binge YouTube videos, because they’re to lazy and entitled to put in the effort to actually read.

It’s like they have been taught that everything should be quick and easy and as a result, real imagination and critical thinking have all but dyed out. Honestly, it’s no wonder they are Such clueless meandering zombies with the attention span of a goldfish (which is more than three seconds) reading takes work, and they are just to lazy to bother.

My nephew is 10 years old and he reads a lot; my sis started him young and it stuck with him. He mostly plays Roblox and watches streamers but he can pick up a book and read it, at least that's something.
Same with my nephew.
Since when is there an age for reading books? I think no matter how old you are, reading is always a good thing and it educates you. I think if more people in this world would read then we would have a better world.
None, but childhood is where the most love can be fostered before school makes it a hated chore and with an age were I've seen mom's hand their iphones to babes barely old enough to sit up without help it's an honest question of does the youth today, with many distractions than previous generations, read books? And I agree reading does more for mind than endless scrolling but it's a shame that's a default to killing boredom than something that requires more energy.

I've seen worse, people asking Siri on how to handle life itself.

Yes, that too even DeepSeek.

Well my Nephew and Niece are reading are childhood books and comics we won't let them have TikTok (well the real reason is we don't have one and our Internet is not one Months subscription) so we rely on offline actives like reading playing board games and of course playing our childhood video games.

On the other hand I don't understand why some people out there think that if you read fiction (ie: sci-fi or fantasy) it doesn't count as "serious/useful reading" when it's still reading a good story with a message behind.

Should every books be only informational? It sounds boring if you only read about mathematics.

i do read and i'll keep reading for as long as i live.
i would also love to be a writer one day
