Do you think it's controversial/acceptable if someone decides not to spend any kind of money on games anymore?

And by that I mean: don't buy on sale, don't buy indie games, don't play free-to-play games, don't save money to buy a game or are too poor and can't anyway. The person has the "means" to make any purchase and will continue playing/acquiring games, but won't spend a single cent on them whatsoever.

People can do whatever they want with their money, including not spending any at all. ::cirnoshrug
This. I have opinions about how people should support indies, but you can't make people do anything with their money that they don't want to do. It's better to not stress about it.

Since it's a hobby and it involves luxury items there is nothing about it that would make it controversial no matter whatever reason you have because it's your decision to make so it doesn't involve anyone to even form an opinion about it that would cause a controversial reaction or something lol.

I had a friend like that. Since the days of bootleg CDs he just never moved into new era of Steam/online distribution and could never understand why I pay for games if you can just... you know *wink-wink*. But it never caused any heated arguments between us so I guess I learned not to judge people pretty early in my life. Besides I get it, I like getting games for free when publishers or devs offer me a key or two.

Well I wouldn't call it controversial. It's a matter of respect, we are free to spend the money or not but we are able to get the game anyways for free. That person relies on other people paying so he can get new games, because if all the people would be like that nobody would get any new game anymore.

Let's put it this way: there is a party and all the people attending is contributing to buy something for the party in order to make everyone enjoy, but you don't buy a shit and want the same privileges as other members. In my country that is called being unrespectful.

completely and utterly unacceptable. blind consumerism is one of the pillars of gaming and every REAL gamer TM must abide by it. now please go collect some games on sale that will stay on your backlog for the following two decades
that's not good enough, if you want to truly support game industries then buy some loot boxes!

Just call the beasts its name: VideoGames Pirates, tgats we are here.
From the 1st era till last gen. I bought every new gem. consoles and some launch games with it.
But when the pirates, hacking, modding became common ability, I buy the new hardware to mod myself and download the games or buy 100.000+ games hdds ready to play.
So instead of actual playing the games when I bought it retail, the obsestion became just modding and collection games to make it work with emulation became the 'sport game' itself.

And if something is Free, you are the Product.

Unacceptable! How will Yves Guillemot afford his luxury private jet he flies in while he lays people off? Think of the credit card processors! How will they wage their holy war against smut without leaching a few cents off of every purchase you make online?

I think we are leading the conversation to digital games, and the industry is divided by the people who only buy digital and do not care about owning anything, they just live the momentum, but some other people think those games will be there forever. The other group only buy physical, and contribute the same way to the industry, even if they reject digital.

A more interesting subtopic would be: what would do a person who only buys physical and rejects digital at all costs, when a game that is supposed to be physical is released digital only?

In all seriousness, this is something that we should think about.

I collect physicals, I've went to great lengths to get physical games (looking at you my $250 after shipping and tax GalGun Double Peace). Personally I back up games on PC if it's only available digitally, I'm still looking for a way to store these files more efficiently beside just storing them in one huge drive, but it is better than nothing, I'll settle with that for now.

Idk it depends. Torrenting/getting repacks of AAA games from huge companies? I think that's fine.

Never paying for indie/small developers? That's more grey. Typically, my rule is if you genuinely like the game, you should buy it unless the price is insane.

I'll typically purchase from smaller companies to support them. If they're devs that do right by the consumer, I'll vote for them to continue that with my own wallet.

It's tough. Capitalism and the 'free market' don't actually cultivate healthy competition and ingenuity. It cultivates a space where money is king, and making a machine that makes the most is the end goal. This is why we see the big companies just pumping out mediocre product with a popular name tacked on. They know people will buy it for the name, not the quality or innovation of the product.

You can protest the system by not participating, but by doing this 100%, you're also punishing smaller companies for trying new things and for taking risks. We need to be supporting devs that try new, risky games, as opposed to supporting companies making more of the same.

Ultimately, you can do what you want, I don't personally care one way or the other. This is just my opinion; I think we should be purchasing from devs that aren't afraid to try new things. This will support the industry to grow in a way that benefits us, the consumer.

For me is clear, if I like the game I buy it physical. If it is released digital only in my region I search for it in any region that is released physical, regardless of its language and get it. After that, I download it in my region for free, because I already gave my support to the company, and my max priority is to get a physical thing.

When the game is released digital only no matter the region because developer does not give a damn about people? I don't give a damn about them and I download the game anyways for playing if it's a game I was excited about. Sometimes it happened that after some time, the game got a physical release by some low cost publisher, in such cases I buy it, even if it gets physical 1 or 2 years after.

By free to play, you mean pure mtx monetization model, not actual freeware, right?
