A long time ago i played the NES version of FF, it was a little bit confusing but as time went by, I was able to understand it
so years later I tried the GBA remake and the differens between of both games are very noticeable.
So I remembered and started thinking about the experience I had in both games and my conclusion was FF (NES) aged badly because the enemies rate is very crazy, you can literally run into another battle just by taking one step, it's not very clear which weapons are suitables for each class, the leveling up are so slow, is so tedious buy one by one the heal potions and for me, to RPG current standars is vey mid
GBA fix all my problems whit this game
(i know it have a DS remake but i didn't play it)
Well some aspect age well the sprite the battle system and bosses
Not age well so many bug some spells aren't working the random encounter are notorious and don't forget the secret boss before Tiamat the robot love to encounter with you
I wish it had a hack to fix all this rebalance because I really like the look.

There's a good amount of rebalance hacks, and even final fantasy Renaissance which is a fan remake in unity with the same look and new classes :3
But that being said... As a gal who loves open, plot loose JRPGs like dq3 etc. as well as more detailed plots like later FFs, and retro games as a whole... smth about ff1 does struggle to hold up to me. Maybe it's that the game plays a relatively straight face with its plot, without the humor of other jrpgs. The spell slot system is also imo actively really bad and just limits you so needlessly it makes the game feel like it has far less depth than it could've had. I also don't like the music as much, and aesthetically it's nice but idk, smth about it just doesn't click with me. I wish I could like it more than I do, idk what it is though. I did like the PSP remake quite a lot more.
I played the GBA version and just kinda lost interest over time.
Somehow it just didn't have the same charm and driving force for me as the first Dragon Quest remake on SNES.
I've also tried the NES original and it just doesn't hold my attention.
It wasn't bad or awful or anything, I just kinda lost interest even tho the GBA remake of FF1 and 2 look and sound beautiful.
It's my favorite Final Fantasy entry. The Wonderswan and PSX ports have some nice bugfixes, so they're the better versions, but I'll always prefer the original to any of the remakes. The remakes are all so mindless, like a stock RPGMaker project.
The Restored romhack is incredible.
The NES version hasn’t aged so well, but I think that the WonderSwan, Origins, and Dawn of Souls versions have aged quite well. I have no opinions on the PSP or 3DS versions.
i mean it's entirely playable but more than half the game just DOESN'T WORK
it's incredibly broken, both bad and good,
starting with the worst:
1. INTELLIGENCE STAT DOES NOTHING, it literally does not function
meaning red mage overclasses both black and white, same strength but both B/W magic available.
magic is generally terrible in NES FF1 as it never gets stronger in end game.
2. attack and evasion buffs just don't work, temper and saber (attack up) doesn't work at all
dispel only works on your party (it lowers magic resistance so no reason to use on YOURSELF)
Lock (focus, decrease enemy evasion)) doesn't work, and Lok2 (focuara) INCREASES enemy evasion
many of the enemies own buffs don't work also lol
3. running away from fights is bugged
4. none of the weapon special effects work (like silver sword works better on undead)
the Good bugs:
1. the critical hit bug, the critical hits read the item ID value, so later weapons have higher crit rate
the highest one is Masamune, has a 40/200 chance (20%) to crit, excalibur the best sword has 39/200
it's literally game-changing, using both masamune and excalibur you beat the game
2. the peninsula of power, that was not intended, the enemies of the top continents spawn which are not supposed to be there and you'd not fight them until you got a boat, its just a way to powerlevel early (you really shouldn't need to on NES especially)
3. (idk if it's a bug really but broken all the same)
you can use DEATH (rub) on BOSSES! ALL OF THEM! even CHAOS! it's hard to land but not impossible! in my 4 black mage playthrough on NES, i landed death in 3 turns!
so being REALLY honest, FF1 is good on ANY OTHER PLATFORM where many bad bugs are fixed. the best one is PSP hands down, everything fixed and working properly, all GBA extra content (100 floors and like 20 bosses from other FF games) and it's own PSP exclusive extra dungeon

i can't play any other version after playing it on PSP, looks good, sounds good, plays good, and has every piece of extra content. doesn't help all other ports are slower (not counting fast forward via emulator)
are we talking about warmech? i've actually never seen it, i only learned its existence on pixel remaster as i was missing ONE enemy log entry for the achievement and spent 3 hours LOOKING for it and never found it.
spent an hour (on fast foward x4) looking for it on PSP port and didn't find it ...
i was looking at videos where people fought it so yes i was on the right map for sure.
I gave it a go recently, and enjoyed it very much. As someone who plays Baldur's Gate1/2 and a lot of the old Goldbox D&D games with regularity, I quite like its blatant D&D influences. I'm not allergic to the vancian magic system that FF1 and the early Wizardry games use as opposed to just using an ever-inflating MP stat for everything.
Random encounters in a lot of modern jRPGs are nothing more than speedbumps, but with spells and inventory space being a finite resource, carefully managing your resources and preparing for your dungeon dives becomes an important facet of gameplay. To me it's a more rewarding experience than buying up 99 potions and hi-potions and just trucking along to the next save point.
I've even come around to the whole 'attacking an already dead enemy is a wasted turn' mechanic, because it forces you to consider the health of your enemies instead of brain-dead 'spam attack button to win'.
I wouldn't expect it to be everyone's cup of tea- and sometimes when decompressing with a jRPG after work you just want to turn your brain off and relax. The game also has some QOL issues which the romhacks do a good job of addressing.

The visual changes and added content are nice, but it's a very different game to the original; kinda plain and unremarkable. There are plenty of games with the same battle system, but more story content or more classes to choose from, so I'd rather play those.
The original is more unique. Other than romhacks and fan games based on it, nothing really fills its niche. Etrian Odyssey does in some ways, but it's a DRPG. Pokémon nuzlocking does in other ways, but that's a self-imposed ruleset. There's no exact replacement for it yet.

Recently, I decided to go on a quest to find out what are the best "enhanced vanilla" romhacks of each of the classic Final Fantasy games (I ~ VIII). That is, to figure out which romhacks offered the best combination of superior (re)translation, major bug fixes, minor QoL improvements, etc. of...

I determined that the best way to experience the seminal NES original was via the 'Restored + RageBurner Select' patch..
