I play an 8-string guitar and a 5-string bass. Can't get enough of those extra low notes. I would describe my writing style as Melodic Black Metal because I like music theory, but extra strings are uncommon in that genre so maybe it should be called something else. Do you play anything?

I highly recommend a multi-effects pedal. Even having a chain of just a few pedals quickly becomes an unmanageable clusterfuck of wires you don't have enough outlets/9v batteries for. I have a BOSS ME-25 (it's a bit outdated but still serves my needs) and it saves me a lot of headache. My distortion effect is the built-in Ultra Metal preamp with a clean boost and a bit of reverb. I've been told it sounds Scandinavian. A multi-effects pedal gives you a lot more control over your sound. The only thing is, they can be a bit more complicated to configure than separate pedals. (You'll want to make sure it comes with the manual or that the manual is at least obtainable online) I wouldn't recommend one to a technophobe, but since you're here I doubt that's you.

That absolutely destroys the fun of playing an instrument. You MUST play on your terms or it's going to be ruined for you. I feel bad for all the musicians who were forced to be perfect who can play excellently but hate doing so.

Some teacher are making it easier to hate on something than loving it...

Weren't there stories of piano and band teachers who were almost hitting the students when they do a wrong note?

I did get a little experimental for about a year, first when I found Mixcraft 9 in a Humble Bundle then later when my family bought me first a cheap MIDI keyboard then a slightly less cheap MIDI keyboard. I spent a good amount of time using Cherry Audio VSTs (the PS-20 and the A2600) and did a few remixes and even tried my hand at a few creations. Unfortunately for me actually creating something is quite difficult when your knowledge of musical theory is based on "modular" music. What I had the most fun with was creating little "scenes" using sound. If I can manage to dig a few up maybe I'll most them here. Why not, lol

I have plenty of riffs recorded but I rarely finish my songs because I'd need, at minimum, a drummer and a vocalist to avoid doing literally everything myself. It would be nice to have a different person for each instrument though. I think that's the best way to have it: a separate brain for each track.

Absolutely do that. This thread is as good a place to upload it as any.

Geez. Oh well. This is completely amateur content. Ahem:

The first is called, "The Approach," which was the only track I finished for a fictional game. Technically it is the "Short Version," however the "Long Version" simply has more wind blowing (well, fake wind). It (and most of my creations) came about from noodling around with a MIDI keyboard and sounds from various VSTs (in this case, Helm and maybe Surge XT). Also, it is not the mastered version, which if I remembered had pitch-shifted wind. Maybe. It's been a really long time.

This is nothing more than one of my "modular" songs, however the part you hear when clicking on it is actually my favorite part (and the only part I 100% created). I wonder if you can hear what it is...
