I'm terrible at naming stuff i choose this name in FF7 instead of just being called cloud i choose "cloud JAY" and the JAY is just like that JAY so everytime a character called my name they would say cloud then JAY how it sounds is basically a calm cloud then a loud JAY..... Yeah after the FF7 debacle i no longer try to name stuff like that.... In FF5 the game didn't give me a name so i choose sam i just go with whatever comes up in my mind.

In FF1 i think it was by far my best attempt at naming the team was:

James the Warrior
Carl the Thief
Leo the Black mage
Zeno the White mage

In ff3 another time i had to name people something i went with

Adrian (team leader)
Martin (white mage/healer)
Jason (warrior/dragoon/knight)
Samuro (monk/black belt)

Most names i use are probably inspired from something like samuro from WarCraft and Jason from Greek mythology and Adrian from half life opposing force.

In Diablo 2 i went with jill the amazon named after Jill from RE

As for me if I were playing a Male Character I always Name either Maxx or Felix as for Female Characters is either Maddy or Kirika

As a child it was always naming the first character my name. Trying to make them as close to me as possible. As I got older, like late-teens+ I started trying to use "cannonical" names for characters in-universe and roleplaying a little more. Kinda' swinging back to self-inserting lately though. I think seeing how many other people (guys) play as female characters made me contrarian and want to play male characters again. Or maybe I just got tired of favouring one gender over another, IDK.

Last game I played with a custom character was Cyberpunk2077 and since it's first-person and I don't like the character I ended up not caring about my choice regarding that at all.

But sometimes I do like to self-insert. In a very rare case, I also name my character after gemstone with Jet, Diamond, and/or Obsidian reserved for main character.

I used to use my pseudonym for my character but then I thought it could've been cheesy so I end up naming my male characters "Icare" (mostly because I like greek mythology and this name is pretty sounding).

If numbers are allowed and I can't write more than 4 characters (especially in old games) I use "009" (like the Cyborg and MI6's secret agents).

I don't have a specific female character name but I think I sometimes go for any 4 letters name that uses o as the second letter and a for the last (such as "Mona").

For me it's always Alex, Ivan or Jack for male characters, and Veronica, Ellie Kate or Poppy for female characters. I would love to partly blame Golden Sun (GBA) for Ivan's name. The name just wouldn't go away from my mind, so it's like a default name for every male character now.
I remember Ivan being pretty handsome, but not more than Piers (that name is terrible though).

I usually try my hardest to keep character names default. I don't try to self-insert unless it's a game that supports it, and when talking to anyone else about outside of the game, they usually refer to that named character as whatevers default. Even characters that never had a default name like in Nier, people just call the main character Nier. You'll always be Shepard in mass effect, in game and out, no matter what your name is.

But if push came to shove, I give characters whatever their in-game title is. Or OchinchinMan. Whichever I feel is appropriate.

Don't know why, never watched enough of the series Adric was in, but I did really like the name. Kind of has an old english twang to it

I have also used like Elden Ring bosses as names for my Final Fantasy parties.

Nowadays I go with Jayonnaise, or either Jayo or Nnaise if there is a smaller character limit.

Always canon name.
If no canon name available and they have randomizer, that.
If no randomizer available, the name of protag from the previous game I played.
If it doesn't work (like I'm not gonna name my Oblivion character Jin Kazama), I'm gonna try pull a reference based on the character and voice.
If it still doesn't work, Red Dude, or Red Gal depending on gender.

There are few exception, for example all my character in every Pokemon is named after red rangers.
