I always felt like trying to follow the canon of a character that isn't supposed to have one being a hassle.
Like, Link is the default avatar name but it wasn't until Breath of the Wild that the character is actually named as such in the game (it has always been "Hero of Time" or any title he was given which felt better to me than just a name).
Link is, as his name implied, the link between the player and the game world, he doesn't exist until you make a save file and deleting one kills him (thus the "kill mode" for the name of the delete option in Japan).
Even the Dragon Quest protagonist doesn't have a canonical game per se (even if they have a default name such as Abel or Eight/Eito) since they're an avatar.
Red from Pokémon is just for convenience (and the first default name proposed if you don't want to give him one) yet people also call Ethan "Gold" despite that he's not named as such.
I remembered I do have some names I use specifically for FF1. I use the Duane & BrandO names, but they didn't name Thief or White Mage, so I came up with my own that felt like they sort of matched.
Fighter = Dune
B. Belt = Spud
R. Mage = Jojo
B. Mage = Leo
Thief = Lore
W. Mage = Fen
I use my own name for female characters if they are genuinely a blank slate/meant to serve as the player insert character and not just a 'they have their own personality you can just choose their name' type (in that case I use the canon name).
I don't have any default names I use for male characters because I'm bad at coming up with male names so I usually just make something up that fits the game setting or sounds funny.
I usually go for Aki. Don't know why, just always went for it. I tried using Tilo on some occasions where it's a literal self-insert. But if there's a canonical name, I usually go for that instead.
I've used two names over the years. "Mag..." used to be a name of an MMO character I got attached to, so it was either that or just "Mag" when the space permitted.
Then I made another character that I poured even more time into, "Oxo...", so I often use "Oxo" in my save files nowadays.
