Do you go for anime or manga first?

The main issue is that in today's digital age not everyone want to spend too much on a manga series that is over 20 volumes long, it takes space and time.

An anime, you launch it on the VOD site of choice and there you go.

...You buy manga?
I buy manga. I started doing it when a book store opened up at a mall I was working near a few years ago. They had a really nice manga selection, it was fun to browse. Since then I still frequently buy physical manga. It just feels a lot nicer to hold and read compared to doing it on a screen. It's collectible too. I just like having books on a shelf I guess. If you're really done with a series, you can always sell them and get a chunk of your money back.

Yeah I was joking lol, I also buy some manga, only the ones I already read tho, since they are very expensive!

Case by case basis. Some manga have awful anime adaptations, some anime deliver the visual narrative and comedy better than a 4-koma manga could. Some manga will never get an anime adaptation, some anime are original stories.

yup, I buy them, it's mostly so i can read them at the dinner table in the morning and because I like to build up a collections,

but if I didn't have the money and I really wanted to read them then I just read them online in that case

4komas suffer from being formulaic sometimes. Garfield (yes, I consider it a western 4koma) for example has too many recycling of quirks.

Wasn't Lucky Star a 4koma too?

usually it goes like this for me
anime -> if the opening theme is appealing
then read the manga after just to see the differences
though i get more compelled to continue with the manga more since it is the original story if it's good

happened with prince of tennis, naruto, bleach
... i guess exceptions would be like bakuman ... i actually went with that first because it was from the same dudes that brought us death note ... also the anime adaptation didn't come out until a few years after

Generally anime first, then manga if I really enjoyed the anime. For the most part I've seen more anime than read manga, but I've been trying to read some more manga. Especially manga that don't have an anime adaptation.

Anime has the advantage of color, sound, movement, and voice acting... but I gotta admit I am becoming more a fan of manga these days. I spent my whole christmas catching up on Medalist in anticipation for the anime, and with the first 4 episode out I gotta say it doesn't hold a candle to the sourcematerial. As someone who loves movies and is too lazy to read books, I hate to be the guy saying "the manga is better" which is the equivalent of saying "the book is better" but... the manga IS better, sorry.

Also, when I started on Dr. Stone it only had 2 episodes released, and because I couldn't sit still, I decided to read ahead in the manga. Now the manga is long finished, and the only reason I still watch the anime even though I know what happens, is because I wanna see the story in color and hear the characters' voice. At the moment I am super excited to her what Dr. X sounds like in the next episode.

Also also, the anime is often toned down. I watched the first 50 episodes of Fairy Tail, and when I skimmed through the manga I was surprised to see... blood? There ain't no blood in the anime. It's toned down for little kids.

I mostly go for the anime first since they are easier to find and I don't like reading manga digitally
I read some mangas in scans (money and space issue because a 20-30 volumes manga gets expensive quickly) but nothing could change the feeling of touching actual paper and turning pages...

Yeah, they take a ton of space, especially longer series, so I now just buy series I really like or finished manga without an adaptation
I do read scans for ongoing series (one piece, frieren, berserk) but only because those are not in print yet

That's why I prefer shorter and complete stories.

first, i go for the manga, in order to be aware of the canon material, then if the anime adaptation is good solid/good, i will watch it, because anime effects most of the times, make it better, it depends again, on the studio and all, but you get my point

I primarily read manga first but if I do start with anime I always skip filler.

It's pretty circumstantial. Like with My Hero Academia I watched the anime because I LOVED the animation and it was way more accessible at the time, but I can't say that for everything. Hunter x Hunter, for example, I've been reading the manga instead of watching the anime because it just feels more complete, and a LOT more raw. The anime gets pretty overly censored, and HxH is surprisingly brutal with its visuals and subject matter.

For some I started with the anime first but I changed when I realized that sometimes the manga is completely different from the anime.

Really just depends on the series for me. If the anime makes a lot of changes, is poorly animated, or just has a really bad dub, I'll probably prefer to read the manga. Also if the manga art is just significantly better than the show, I'm likely to prefer that.

Anime first.

I found that the fast-paced nature of anime allows me to give something new a try much easier. And that if I do end up liking that something, I can always go back to the manga for more in-depth world-building.
