Do Yall Prefer Angry Joe Show Or AVGN?

I've never rewatched an Angry Joe video like I do AVGN. but i've also never sought out AVGN for a recent, contemporary review like I do Angry Joe.

I prefer Bum Reviews (CHAAAAANGE!!!!!)

AVGN all the way. Despite the dip in quality over the years I remain a big fan. He's *the* Nerd. Every other angry reviewer is just *a* nerd.
I'm not entirely sure the quality dipped as his setup got more professional through the years but I get the nostalgia for the old school reviews.

I don't mean the technical fidelity dipped in quality, because that aspect has actually improved over the years. Seems to be a correlation between that and the Nerd's hairline receding. Perhaps balding men try harder to look flashy?

The old episodes were about games he actually knew, so he went into more detail and sometimes actually finished the games. Many of the new episodes are of more modern games he doesn't really seem to care about, so he sometimes only goes toe-deep into them. The Crash episode is one such example. It's like he put in just enough time to get the footage for the episodes, and even then he needed to enlist the help of someone who knew the games better than him. I know there are only so many games to cover from the 8 and 16 bit eras, but I prefer episodes about games he can actually get into rather than clearly being outside of his comfort zone.

It feels awfully more scripted nowadays, which takes the amateurish charm that made him both refreshing and relatable away almost entirely.

While the older videos had an amateurish charm he couldn't stay the same and when your channel is getting bigger and older. He could make simpler reviews but this would seem underwhelming considering the legacy.

I get the nostalgia about it but honestly I wouldn't say it's objectively better. It was different.

This is the issue when you do everything you could. After going through most of the popular 8/16 bits era you don't really have any other way than going through the next generation. The 32/64 bits era is retro for a while.

Simpler reviews would be bad (even though he HAS been doing that), but the older videos had a few things that made them seem real in a way that newer ones simply do not: a messy living room to film in, in-your-face camera angles, zooming in and out to demonstrate a point... all things that the newer videos are lacking, even though there's really no reason to avoid them.

I have heard that he can't even move the camera anymore because SWM has it bolted to the ceiling (which... uhhh...).

I love James and I'm thankful for all the nights of fun he has provided (especially because his videos were, at times, the only things able to cheer me up when all I'd do was crying), but it's clear that something has shifted, and not necessarily for the better.

I get what you mean but it's funny you say that, since James and Mike always wrote scripts for their old episodes. There's some behind-the-scenes videos they'd occasionally upload of the process behind making an AVGN video or them just coming up with script ideas and reading them aloud and trying to film themselves acting them out. I think the most unscripted stuff from the old episodes were likely to have been Kyle's scrotum guns song and all the crazy shit Lloyd Kaufman came up with when he guest-starred on the Toxic Avenger episode lol (did you know he had a pussy with wings when he was a teenager in Tijuana?)
