Do many people here use RetroAchievements?

I don't recommend using the site after recent news. The community has become horrible, with bans coming out of the blue if you don't follow the party line, causing all of your progress to be lost. "Reasons for your ban? Oh, we made em up." Worst of all, you can't even show regular users what happened because only moderators can see posts from new users.

I went through phases with it. I'd use it for a while, then have a setup that didn't have the credentials on and not use it for a while, then I'd set it back up again, then start disabling it for games with unreasonable achievements that I couldn't be bothered to pursue, get wrapped up in Steam games and not use it for a while again...

Now I'm about six months from not using it in any capacity and with the recent nonsense I'll just leave it switched off permanently like I'd been mulling over anyway. It'll feel far more freeing just playing retro games how I want to rather than grinding them til I resent them, because some joker slipped in a bunch of timewasting garbage, just to reach that 100% and not leave uncompleted stuff on a profile. Thanks to the individuals who nuked Clover for tipping the scale on that for me.

RA also motivates you to play popular games that are already supported while leaving more niche and obscure games in a deep backlog until they receive achievement sets. I believe there's no reason to explain why that's simply horrible.

For me, I’m old enough to have played most of the games the first time around during the 80s and 90s.”, so I’m not missing out on games.

What I get from it is incentive to replay games I haven’t touched in 25-30 years

but other times they feel like distractions from the core rhythm.
Agreed.

I don’t like when achievements require you to do ridiculous or overly specific things that break immersion or force you to play in unnatural ways.
Some could be good for a second playthrough (like the camera achievement in Portal, the Gravity Gun in Half Life's Ravenholm chapter or even the One True Bullet in Episode 1) but some are just excruciating like the Gnome carrying mission in Episode Two (and L4D) which carried as the weird hat in Black Mesa...

Entropy Zero 2's Wilson Turret achievement was good because your ride had a proper seat for him and he's actually useful and even asks you to let him here when you got a level without requiring him

I just started using it this month, but I’m not planning to 100% any game. Still, it’s a cool addition.

i got no clue what it is or what it does, i'd assume it doesn't work on real consoles, though

You have to use something like Retroarch. I love it!

While some of the achievements can be a bit harsh, overall I really like the idea and think it's neat. It's honestly the thing that makes me torn between playing on emulator, where I can work on achievements, or playing the games on the physical hardware I have.

i mean the concept of the website is so awesome! it saves history of what you have played, i do have it but nowdays i forgot how you connect it to an emulator, plus idk why my account link don't work lol

I do but not all the time.

I'd probably be using achievements if they worked on consoles (outside of RetroArch).

I'd love to use it, just for fun, but aside from the fact that I'd have to configure the emulators and change the settings all over again...

I HATE the fact that I have to play NTSC games for it to work because only a handful of PAL games are supported. Is it really that difficult to get both formats to work?

Feels like I'm back in the early 2000's yeah.

I think it's harder because the code strings are different (like why NA cheat codes don't work for the PAL version of a game).

Do not combine flycast with xbox 360 people only want achievements only because of xbox360.

FUCK ACHIEVEMENTS I WANT CHEATCODES!!!

I didn't even know it existed to be honest. Thanks for making me learn something new today.

My OCD already demands I 100% every game I play, I feel having a achievement set to shoot for as well would not be good for me mentally 😅 also I mostly play on og hardware, so it's not really an option for me.
I agree it's a cool way to find out about secrets and niche things about a game, but I usually just find out about it anyway through research.
Kind of a cool OCD tbh. Maybe not so much to live but at least from an external point of view you have a massive 100% collections, like an achievement museum of sorts, I find that to be cool. ::peacemario

Now that piqued my curiosity. Please elaborate. Either here or in DMs. ::goblingrin
An old 4chan hack of pokemon upset a dude who never contributes to RA, Xkeeper, the guy who runs tcrf. Instead of being able to take a joke or just ignoring it, he did what everyone on his side of the aisle tends to do, cry and scream about le heckin chuds and nazis until the admin that runs RA capitulated. He was the main proponent but there's always a contingent of these fucking shitbirds that infect every hobby they touch

Oh, that one romhack which I only know thanks to a Tower of Heaven remix right?

If the person didn't contribute to the site what kind of authority would they have? I didn't know it was them who had The Cutting Room Floor either.

I don't have enough recoil to judge the full story but that's kinda weird. Are mods and romhack often on RA?

IIrc they went on blusky and bitched, the english/ retro gaming community in general isn't that big in the grand scheme of things there are only a handful of websites everyone uses

You can make sets for pretty much anything, or could, but now they're even making comments about how maybe Harry Potter games should no longer have sets.

That reminds me of the Nexusmod debacle.

Holy hell, I can understand the disdain about the person who created the book from some but those games aren't the books... Things haven't improved since Hogwarts Legacy?
