I'm a big fan of RetroAchievements (find me here: https://retroachievements.org/user/dodgykebaab )
I feel they help breath new life into older games that I played years/decades ago. Games like Castle of Illusion which I beat many time on the Mega Drive back in the 90s is still a good game but I feel little need to go back and revisit. But with RetroAchievements I feel that I have a reason to blast though the games again.

Also ports of retroarch to consoles that leave out Retroachievements (like the PS4 and 360 ports) just annoy me.

Do many of you guys use Retroachievements? If so post those profile links here!

no, I never truly cared about achievements, often they feel more like work than fun even though its always tempting to go after then, so its kind of a relief to me old games don't have then. besides I don't really have that much time nowadays to play the whole game again because I missed something

I use it primarily for tracking games i've played\beat. The achievements are neat but I really love the fact that it chronicles stuff you've played and how far you got.

On paper I understand why many people use something like RetroAchivements, but at the same time I don't get why you need achievements in retro games to begin with. Its something that got popular during more recent console generations so the idea of shoving that into retro games is kinda weird to me. I suppose its a more rewarding reason to replay old games, but personally I never needed that.

from the regular user standpoint it makes sense, but RA is more than just a community of nostalgic gamers... some folks there are more interested in coding the achievements and tinkering around old games/systems

I proactively disable anything related to trophies or achievements. I started doing that with PS360 but I only could when hacking the consoles because Sony and Microsoft enforce it without any option to disable or remove it. Retroachievements are personal, and they belong to your own criteria, if you want to have them. Nobody should tell me what to achieve lol.

I just got into them a few weeks ago. It’s a nice little fun set of challenges to give yourself for games you’re familiar with already and sometimes encourage you to play the game in different ways.

I also like retro games because devs didn't need achievements to make their games compelling to replay.

I've never bothered with it or checked what was compatible. I only use standalone emulators.

My OCD already demands I 100% every game I play, I feel having a achievement set to shoot for as well would not be good for me mentally 😅 also I mostly play on og hardware, so it's not really an option for me.
I agree it's a cool way to find out about secrets and niche things about a game, but I usually just find out about it anyway through research.

I got worn out on achievements and trophies and kind of hate them now. One of the things I actually love about retro games (and Nintendo Switch games) is that they DON'T have achievements tied to them. I see that as a positive.

Also, achievements are an online thing. No internet, no achievements. I love the merits of offline gaming. So that's one more reason I don't care for them.

I think we are going to see achievements and trophies fall more and more out of favor over time until big companies like Sony just stop supporting them entirely. And when that happens I'll say, "Good riddance"

it's fun! i'm sure plenty of people will have a kneejerk reaction to the concept (i kind of did) but the community aspect is what makes it appealing to me. never felt inclined to collect official achievement sets, but I've gotten a couple tough masteries on here already. I don't think anyone should be conscious of the set when its their first time playing, though. save your energy for games you already like, trust me lol.
my only complaint is that there's a lot of devs who decide to make sets for games they're not all that familiar with and you can really tell when that's the case lol. especially for arcade/arcade derived games, plenty of sets that are poorly scored and not particularly fun.

edit: also, subsets are a very cool idea. planning on doing the phantasy star 2 solo run set soon

I agree with you on some sets being a bit wacky. I mastered Onimusha 2 a while back and some achievements would refuse to pop. Other than that I love what they're doing. I don't really participate in their events but its a cool idea.

Oh hi Raidou Kuzunoha, didn't see you there.

They exist, I'm no hunter or perfectionist for them. I just want to beat the game as intended.

not really, i always turn that shit off, you can really tell it was not made by professionals.🤷‍♂️

Only sometimes, I don't really care that much about retroachievements. It depends on the game and my mood. Sometimes I just want to play through something for the experience, not to chase arbitrary goals. I get that they can add replay value or push you to explore parts of a game you’d normally ignore, but other times they feel like distractions from the core rhythm. Especially with older titles, I’m more interested in the original flow and design than ticking off a checklist. And honestly, I don’t like when achievements require you to do ridiculous or overly specific things that break immersion or force you to play in unnatural ways. If the achievement lines up with something I’d naturally do, great. But if it’s forcing me to jump through hoops just for a badge, I usually skip it.
