I don't think I ever really cared too much personally - I only really became a stickler for it for remakes or remasters of more recent years (past decade or so) which started to mess with art direction or looked worse than the originals. Nocturne, Crash Bandicoot, Grand Theft Auto 3/VC/SA instantly come to mind for that.
Growing up I just used to play whatever and enjoyed it if the gameplay was good, be it older arcade games, Gameboy, PS1, PS2, anything that jumped out. Sure, I mostly stuck closer to the console generation of the time, but that was more about convenience and what friends wanted to play.
I carry most of the same outlook now aside from the remake/remaster thing; if it looks fun I'll try it. Will I crank up settings where I can? Sure. After all, why not? But I wouldn't avoid a game just because it looked bad graphically.
