Did we just time travel to the 90s? I've really missed this version of Sega.

That had nothing to do with their marketing, though. The marketing worked great. Sega made all its great games in Japan and yet they always remained the underdog there on the console market, and only dominated in the arcades. In fact the only time they started selling decently in Japan was with the Saturn, and the Saturn was associated with the Segata Sanshiro ad campaign there, which is pretty aggressive (in a weirder, funnier Japanese way - it's literally the kids being beat up for not playing Sega, which you could never do now). They failed largely due to a certain recklessness in constantly releasing new hardware and pursuing new tech, which IMO probably came from their arcade roots, since arcade hardware changed often and always had to be cutting edge. Even a game like a Phantasy Star Online, which was popular and influential, probably required too much financial investment, because they wanted to push console online gaming first.

also for a strange reason no one mentions that Nintendo in the 90s dropped out of the still lucrative arcade business to focus on console games.
That was even more important than being #2 for a while, sacrificing their arcade division

Nintendo had more arcade games in the 80s that were single screen. Just about all of them were ported to NES as part of the black box series. I think Nintendo had Super Punch-Out in the 90s and that was about it. We didn't really see another arcade title from them until the collaboration with Sega and Namco about a decade later. We got F-Zero AX in the arcade which was AWESOME. But really that was by Sega. :p Luigi's Mansion had an arcade game, so did Mario Kart but that's it. Sega is still making arcade games to this day, granted their newer arcade games aren't as good as their older ones. They're mostly just attractions for theme parks and malls. Not much to them. BUT they still make good Virtua Fighter games! :D Daytona 3 was alright and House of The Dead Scarlet Dawn was rock solid!

Yeah Nintendo didn't stay in the arcade business very long. They had a long tradition of selling home consumer goods before video games and when the success of Donkey Kong translated into an even bigger success with the Famicom I think they just decided to put everything into that instead. Punch-Out came out in 1984 and after that their only arcade releases were those VS modified versions of Famicom games. I think they felt they could hold a monopoly on home consoles and games, which they did for a while, while there were too many other players already established in the arcade market to dominate in the same way.

I'd argue that it was mostly Sega in the US, not the rest of the world.

On the other hand don't forget that it was because of that arrogance that Sega has fallen out of the hardware business.

If your game/company is good you should sell it on why it's good, not by comparing yourself to others. It makes it sound like they're insecure.

PS: Sega's Genesis was stomped on by the SNES back then, Sega were unable to properly transition to 3D unlike Sony and Nintendo and finally the PS2 outsold the Dreamcast which made them stop making consoles. In a way Sega have always been the eternal seconds in the console market.

I remember playing HOTD5 during evening summer heat (had to keep the booth curtains open) and when we reached the Hangedman boss, I felt a sign of relief as the arcade cab had a fan connected to the system. So when he flapped his wings, some refreshing fan air filled the booth

If we traveled to the 90's, Sega would be KING with their sports games again.
