Description

DON'T FORGET TO READ THE READ ME! IT'S VITAL YOU DO!

Dawn of Magic is an Action RPG that has you take on the roll of a mage graduating a magic school. Of course, shenanigans ensue during and after said event! It was a pretty fun little Diablo-like game with a focus on magic and alchemy, pretty cool! This is a Starforce free version!

WARNING!

This game must be started in a very precise way for it to work so read that read me!. I swear, the steps in it are 100% real and even then it may not work 100% of the time. Get that task manager ready just in case! No matter what I did I could not fix it but if anyone knows how to do that, please let me know. I am sorry about this but it works fine when you pass that hurdle and I would rather a game be playable in a weird way then lost to time forever.

Enjoy!

I haven't had much time to look into it, but repackaging the English files from media.bm into the Russian version of the game unfortunately lead to crashes, which isn't a huge surprise.

People who are still modding the game seem to have just accepted the issue with the game hanging most of the time at boot, and the 23 second wait doesn't seem to improve anything on my setup, so I haven't looked much into that side of things.

I was thinking about suggesting it as a project for Nathan Baggs, as it seems like it would be the sort of thing that would technically be right up his alley, but I'm not sure if the fact that it's a cracked game would make it a no-go for him.

I feel like that complete lack of any commercial way to purchase the game, and the fact that its original DRM is not compatible with any reasonably modern OS, might make a better argument though.

I'm definitely quite curious myself about what the issue is, but I'm still fairly certain it's an issue with the no-cd patch's method of circumvention on modern Windows.
Thanks for trying at all. I guess it isnt the worst thing to have this weird wait attached to it but I would love to know what does that too. If you do get anymore info on it I would love to know!

Did you end up finding anything outa curiosity?

The game opens as full screen when it does open, at least on my setup. It seems that the splash screen hang is well known issue by the Dawn of Magic modding community (They report that it opens about 20% of the time), so my efforts likely aren't going to find anything that theirs didn't, but I'll give it a go.

Got it semi working via Windows XP via VMWare Workstation but its extremely stuttery
Post automatically merged:

*sighs* Why does it run fine on VMWare running on windows while it stutters like mad on Linux UGH!!!!!!!!

Could be that it's a 20 year old Windows game lol

And game is unplayable on linux as it crashes with an error

"Label "expected in 'bless_hercules_star.ptb' file."

I will test it via Windows XP running through VMWare and see if that works or not next
Sadly I got no idea how to make it work on Linux. I need to learn Linux one day.

I looked into it a bit, it seems like the issue is likely with the no-cd/crack fix from Reloaded. The game sometimes opens and sometimes hangs at the splash screen for me, but the fix suggested didn't seem to alter the frequency of this.

The original Russian release of the game, Blood Magic, doesn't have these issues, but it was cracked by a different team. It unfortunately doesn't have any English included that I can see, and requires that your system language and region be set to Russian to launch, as it looks for English files that don't exist otherwise.

My knowledge of code is unfortunately not good enough to determine what the exact issue is, but the no-cd from Trivium for the Russian release targets a different DLL directly related to the DRM (StarForge 4), while the Reloaded no-cd seems to use a different workaround, although both must eventually circumvent the operation of StarForge, as it's well known not to work on modern Windows systems.

With my limited knowledge, my best guess is that the Reloaded no-cd is looking for some specific call or hook that doesn't always trigger as expected in modern Windows.

That said, I'll look into possibly patching the English files into the Russian version, as that's more in my (novice) wheelhouse.
Honestly if you could get that going that would be amazing! Thank you for ever considering it ::biggrin Shame its an issue with the crack. Reminds me of Mage Knight Apocalypse and it's issues with launching weirdly like this too.
I am currently on WIndows 11 25H2 with a Nvidia 3070 Ti using the 596.49 drivers and yeah so far nothing. I will be trying on my Linux based laptop tonight tho and seeing it it works better over there. Wouldn't be the first time a game has performaned better on there compared to my desktop LOL. That is as long as I don't run into the game running in a small window on screen like a few other games such as Shadowflare.
I hope you get it going. This was already kinda a weird upload to start with x-x

Yep opens full screen for me with black borders on the left and right side to squish it back to 4:3

20% of the time maybe if your not doing the little trick I found out! It goes up a lot more in success when you do that. Still, wish you didn't have to do that at all.

Keep me updated if you do this! My PMs are open ::biggrin

I loved this game as a kid..
I would have loved to have had it!
This game sounds kinda interesting... 👍
It is!
Another famous Russian game. With a censored name, btw. I guess they thought Dawn of Magic is better than Blood Magic.
That is a pretty cool name. Blood Magic kinda doesn't make sense since the game is all about different magic.
from what i hear on youtube, game needs a lot of modifications, ai changes, etc
Someone made a balance mod for the second game it seems but not the first. Though it's possible to change some stuff from what I found.
Played a bit, more like a diablo clone. The gameplay isnt too good in my opinion. I'll pass.
Its a bit jank but its better then a few other clones iv played lol
I always thought the reason first game was not on steam and gog compared to Dawn of magic 2 is because it had no english translation
But if it always had eng support than i wonder why
I didnt even know 2 was on Steam!
Oh... This looks interesting. Thank you for sharing. 👌
You are welcome ::biggrin
Sheeeesh this is a fire upload. I recently replayed Dawn of Magic 2 because I couldn't get the first game working, so it's great to have this here. Thanks as always!
Thank you! From what I am seeing, people take to the second one a bit more. Guess they learned a lot since game 1!
i remember this game played it alot as a kid good to see it here
Thats a nice memory! And thanks!
My only guess could be Issues with the Publishers. As 1 was published by Deep Silver and Atari in the EU and US respectfully, and its not the first time we've seen rights issues with publishers keep games or expansions in Limbo.
Sounds about right for the dice roll that is retro titles on modern storefronts. Is it there? If it is, did they care enough to make it work for modern systems? Who knows.
Never finished this one. It has some good ideas and I love the big environments, but the gameplay has a lot of jank, lot of problems like balance, collisions and enemy AI. But what really kills it for me is that it takes forever to progress. I did finish the sequel though (which is actually just the expansion repackaged), it doesn't really fix anything but at least it's shorter, but sadly the story in that one sucks.

At least they did get to reuse the engine for the modern King's Bounty games so it wasn't all bad.
They just called the expansion game 2? Thats something lol. I gotta check out the Kings Bounty games too one day.
¿And is not?.
Seems it is.
Hmm I didn't get the your drivers are out of date popup and it froze and crashed on the splash screen
Could be just that fun random chance that is this games starting weirdness. Keep trying, something has to give eventually.
