I wish people loved dark cloud more, it would be fun to see people re imagine it like Ocarina of Time with adding new things or even a randomizer for it. such a amazing platform for new items or voice acting or even new dungeons or maps for the town building.

Yeah. However I remember people disliking it because "Zelda-killer" idea they BS just to advertize the game making people hate the game due to cringe and also by Zelda fans and then the dungeons were rather boring to many. But those who liked it didn't see any problem with the game.

This topic make it interesting to say how video game companies failed by trying to make fans forget about Zelda and instead buy their games. Instead of stealing fans better please the fans by doing your own thing. You don't have to try to be a wannabe just to please. Another aspect of it is false belief of putting whatever into game to attract fans of many different games and expect to come up with a video game that will sell tons because they would expect it to be loved, then people dislike certain games dislike your game.

It's fundamentally wrong to think that developing a game like that's very similar to a popular game will make it sell well. They don't think there are people who really dislike Final Fantasy and GTA.

However Dark Cloud is not even similar to Zelda per se using "Zelda-killer" self-entitlement naturally caused a hate. Just don't mess with fans of popular series. Any video game company that underestimates the power of legendary games and series will all fail. No game can replace Zelda, Final Fantasy or GTA series, it shouldn't anyway. All you can do is bring fresh ideas into video game industry. For example I like Saints Row 4 because it doesn't have what GTA will ever have. It doesn't make it a better game, rather it would be nonsense to even try to think which game is better than the other despite its part of the same series because naturally conditions, technologies, themes et cetera will be different.

I like Dark Cloud in its own context, I dislike Final Fantasy in its own context as a whole series with one exception (Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII). I don't even compare for I cannot compare any game with any game. In the end things are simple because it's all about what game you like and dislike because of who you are. Naturally personal taste is because of personality, no one can make a person like a video game, which is a fact video game companies cannot comprehend. They all think "You will like GTA 6 because it's a GTA" and whatnot BS lol.

It was an alright game. I didn't care for the sequel as much, but again, I never finished the first one.

Preferred the sequel more as it had more gameplay mechanics and taking the train to different locations was a nice touch. Also the game world seemed much more vibrant and alive than the original but thats not to say the original was a bad game. It definitely had it fun moments but as others have said, the dungeons do get repetitive. Also didn’t your character pass out if you ran out of water?😅 remember that used to frustrate me

Yes I played the first and the second part it is a pure construction game . If I remember correctly, Dark Cloud was the first Playstation 2 game I played .🤔

i remember my friend vincent in middle school kept recommending me dark cloud when i got my ps2... maybe i should finally play it someday.

Never played neither 1 or 2, the whole comparison with Zelda turns me off tbh.
I wouldn't recommend anyone to play the series at all, all I can say is there is nothing make it even similar to Zelda at all. It's just typical hack and slash that you can bash your wrench on monsters and shoot them with your pistol in other hand, something like playing Phantasy Star.

My memories for the first game will prevent me from even saying anything about it, it was that forgettable a game for me, but I remember Dark Cloud 2 well.

Dark Cloud 2 has way more cutscenes that make you watch for a long time than any Metal Gear game, or so it seems lol. When people made fun of MGS because of it I was like "dude Dark Cloud 2 is worse on it".

The game is combined with whatever different ideas they came up with. You play as a boy who loves to be an engineer hence his weapon his wrench but I don't remember he ever cared to use a sword or something now. Because of it he carries a camera as the player can take pictures of everything to make the character record ideas of objects. Then players combine these ideas to craft stuff. Crafting matters to craft your gear and upgrade your tiny mech that's more like the mech you can use it in an RPG game called Steambot Chronicles. Crafting naturally works via recipe system so you cannot invent whatever you want to come up with your own customised free imagination. It actually doesn't provide any sandbox fun whatsoever so it seems.

Besides the crafting and mech you can use to defeat monsters, huge part of the game suffers from very frequent long cutscenes that's even way more than new generation Sony games like Uncharted and The Last of Us, when you don't watch a cutscene you are stuck in dungeons for a long time doing the same as locations are the same. Imagine boring Persona 4 dungeons that works the same but way bigger and longer making you constantly kill every monster just to find key item to unlock doors. Whole the story is a typical cartoon thing and story progression clearly made for 4 years old kids.

If my memory doesn't fail me, I think dungeons wasn't so linear, there were different routes to take. I don't remember if it actually changed the game but it may only serve a way to find rare materials to use in the crafting process.

What's more about the game is you can switch player character on the spot once the girl character is unlocked. And then the last significant feature is building town system if you care.

So the game is a weird hybrid of an hack and slash with lots of different features for its time, trying to either way attract audiences but then ironically when people dislike one aspect of the game they can dislike rest of the game. Don't get me wrong though, you can have fun in this game and I think Dark Cloud 2 is a legendary video game in video game industry.

The very same developers developed another RPG that was planned to be Dark Cloud 3 but they didn't risk it so they twisted it into another idea called "Rogue Galaxy". But I assure you Rogue Galaxy is nothing like a Dark Cloud game whatsoever other than core gameplay without mech and crafting idea that's way more simple. I would recommend Rogue Galaxy instead. In this RPG game you can enjoy a classic sense of party RPG without turn based combat and an isometric camera as the whole game has TPS camera. You even have tons of costume to unlock for everyone in your party. You can also play as any character in your party and change them on the spot. It's really a video game that's too much for PS2 lololol. It's a sci-fi game that you can use sword and a pistol, lots of different planets to freely go and explore. It rather has Witcher-like hunting monsters elements. I would say Rogue Galaxy is "Star Ocean killer", still not enough to be "Zelda killer" lol.

I would definitely like another game in the Dark Cloud template. I think there's still tons of ways that format could go to make it even better today. The combat and weapon upgrading were already cool (especially in the second game). Going in and doing dungeon dives to get pieces for creating your own town with some of the tedious parts chopped out could make for a super addicting and satisfying loop.

Maybe some indie devs will make a "spiritual sequel" and smooth some things out. I loved those games but they're definitely grinds and ask some annoying things of the player sometimes haha.

All we got after Dark Cloud 2 is the cancelled Dark Cloud 3 game that transformed into another game called Rogue Galaxy lol. Core gameplay and crafting idea is similar, it's more like another Star Ocean without any care for town building, but lots of planets and therefore towns to experience from most primitive to advanced cities.

A good game, I have a love-hate relationship with it.
But the sequel, Dark Chronicle is SOOO MUUUCH BETTER in every aspect, it´s my 2nd favorite game ever.
This series definitively needs to be more known by everyone.

Actually, Dark Cloud 3 was planned after Rogue Galaxy, but then got cancelled.

I got mine from my older cousin. It's a bit stiffer to control than Ocarina, but it has similar vibes. I like the combat. I like the literal world building. I like the extra characters you meet along the way. The music is relaxing. I used to think the first area and dungeon was all there was to the game but no it kept going. :) Gotta wonder what non anime fans thought of the first party member to join you being a literal cat girl. lol The theme of Dran's cave and the boss fight with him are stuck in my head to this day. Tracking down the NTSC version of the OST is a pain though as most uploads seem to be the European or Japanese ones. It's higher pitched than the US one. Sounds off to me having grown up with NTSC.
