CRT Thread

My Sanyo that I got from 2009 at the Goodwill that I'd later work at (even came with the remote too). Other than the front A/V jacks being blown out by my old video camera, it still works like a champ

Though modern filters on high resolution modern displays can somewhat replicate the look of a CRT monitor, there are still many of us who love the look and feel of a real crt, prefering to use these old displays to play our favourite retrogames to this day.
How do you use your crt? do you play on original hardware or did you connect it to your pc?
Post your setups/monitor/games you are playing.
I use a SONY PVM 14l2 connected to my pc with crtemudriver and Retroarch SwitchRes.

I'm currently playing through the Turbografx-CD version of Ys I & II

I think there's the royale CRT filter that really does a good job emulating it. I tested it recently and it really felt like the real thing. Aside from the curved glass surface, obviously.

A local vintage store in my area had a couple of cute monitors recently. Totally shocked me, since I haven’t seen any for sale in years! I thought about getting one, but without a reliable means of getting it home (plus me not having a place for it to go), I chose not to. If they aren’t too expensive, I may just convince my partner to let me adopt one. I would be willing to put up with RF output if it means playing on a cute portable CRT.

Yup! I probably overpaid for it ($30 with no power supply :/ ) but it’s a cute little black and white thing! It fits snug in my backpack, and I can imagine it being pretty cool for certain things! I have a trinitron already, so I’m more than happy to pick up a little weirdo like this guy!

Does anyone have any experience with calibrating the tube potentiometers directly? I have a RCA TruFlat display whose display is... fine but not great. I've played around with it's calibration menu, but it leaves a lot to be desired.

Have you tried the 240p Test Suite yet? It’s a piece of homebrew made for a whole bunch of stuff that can help with calibration. It’s used professionally nowadays, I’m fairly sure.

(Almost any system you can jailbreak has a version of the 240p Test Suite for it.)

That's what I was using to calibrate. I had that loaded onto my SNES's everdrive.

The problem with it is that the display has pretty good settings for fixing vertical issues, but very little for horizontal it seems. It also seems to be at a slight tilt, where the lower part of the display extends several pixels lower than the right side. It's not a major deal, and probably not worth trying to fix it physically, but I thought I'd throw it out there.

I don't have a ton of experience with different sets but my 1943md needs to be calibrated via potentiometers in the chassis. The set needs to be on and test suite pulled up while adjusting. You may be able to find a manual online but otherwise be mindful of your adjustments so you can bring it back if you need to. If its convergence you should be able to get convergence strips. The other possibility is you may need a recap if you cant bring the screen back. Also, flats are pretty susceptible to drifting out of spec by nature. Needless to say, be careful when you're in there with live power.

BTW I also have a truflat, which needs minor calibration. Maybe this weekend Ill look in there.

I miss my last CRT. It was one of the first internet TVs that came out with a full ass keyboard built into the handset.

It was a Bush ITV8401

It was so cool but it was also too bulky to justify storing in my tiny flat. If I ever size up I'm deffo gonna go CRT hunting again.

I even had to replace my PS1 scorpions for an AimTrak -_-

To me a CRT filter is the height of pointlessness. They never look right and end up just feeling like a detriment rather than taking me back to the CRT days.
holy shit this is badass.
