Covers/Remix Discussion

Aw yea, now that is what I'm talking about, a fire remix.
This cover of T.S.O.L's Wash Away by Alkaline Trio
What about it? You think it is better than original? I dunno, I give it to TSOL, but both are good. I like the sound of the guitars better, doesn't really feel like Alkaline Trio is trying... And don't get me wrong, I like Alkaline Trio: "Continental" is an amazing song!

Anyone like the Punk goes... compilations? There is a couple of the pop ones I like. Breathe Carolina killed the original. More pop songs need growling vocals :P

Lil Uzi’s cover of Chop Suey, singlehandedly set their reputation back with how shitty it was.

Worst track off of Pink Tape by far.

There's a guy named Ben Briggs who remixes a ton of video game tracks. I enjoy the majority of his stuff!

Agreed, that is kind of laughably bad (wtf with the random noises?) but I do like parts: there is a good cover trying to exist there. They should have done more sampling or usage of the chorus which is the best part of the original. Fell into the trap of composing too close to the original and altogether kind of falls apart.

Yeah, you can tell they do respect the art but it’s too disoriented to form a cohesive cover.

It's ok to sound like the original (same rhythm and energy), but you need to do improvements. For example, I love this one because it cuts out the stupid pre/post chorus "rah rah, oh la la..." part from the original. I like lady ga ga, but that always annoyed me on bad romance. A more heavy sound also sets it apart from the original, making this a great cover I like more than the original.

There's a lot of songs for me that I enjoy that are covers. A majority of these I probably enjoy both the original and the cover, but there's definitely at least a handful where I specifically just like one or the other, or at least significantly prefer one or the other.
Some particular highlights:

This cover is actually a bit different than what's typical for 10 years, but I absolutely love how haunting and atmospheric they made it.

I know this song is a little bit infamous for being a song a lot of people don't realize is a cover, but I feel the need to mention it because it's one of those that I still see many people surprised by, and I personally strongly prefer the original by Tears For Fears. I do like both though.

Alestorm has done a few covers I like, but in particular You Are a Pirate and Hangover stand out amongst them for me.

Everyone knows about Alien Ant Farm's cover of Smooth Criminal, but another cover of theirs that I think is pretty strong is their cover of Wham's Everything She Wants.

Sabaton also has several covers I'm particularly fond of, specifically Twilight of the Thunder God, For Whom the Bell Tolls, Feuer Frei, Camoflage, All Guns Blazing, and In the Army Now.

Another song that was not originally creepy in terms of its sound that was made more atmospheric and haunting in its cover that I really like. Also one I particularly like both versions.

Rainbow's Since You Been Gone and I Surrender are actually covers, which was a surprise to me to find out. The originals are by Russ Ballard and Head East for those curious or who are very familiar with Rainbow's covers and want mildly cursed experience.

Disturbed also has a fairly famous cover in The Sound of Silence, but I've always personally preferred their cover of Land of Confusion, which I also significantly prefer to its original counterpart. (Don't worry for those of you familiar with the original music video, it's not the one with those terrifying puppets.)

Leave it to Dope to give me one of the most fun covers that I've ever heard. Granted, I don't know how you'd cover You Spin Me Round without making it fun.

Korn actually also has a few interesting covers, notably their cover of all three parts of Another Brick in the Wall, their cover of Lowrider, their cover of Creep which they did live for MTV Unplugged back in 2007 (this might be the most normal song Korn has ever done), their awesome cover of The Devil Went Down to Georgia, and my personal favorite, their cover of Kidnap the Sandy Claws done for Nightmare Revisited, which in itself is a very interesting, and hit and miss cover album. The other highlight from that album is probably Marilyn Manson's cover of This is Halloween, and The All-American Rejects and Rise Against also contributed some surprisingly solid covers for Jack's Lament and Making Christmas respectively.

This one really threw me for a loop because I first heard it when the Miku cover got memed. Wind Rose's cover of Diggy Diggy Hole similarly had my brain confused for a hot minute, but I absolutely love it.

Scorpions absolutely nailed this cover.

Seether is one of the last bands I would have expected to make a cover of Careless Whisper of all songs, but this is a really solid cover.

I've also always thought this Shinedown cover of Simple Man goes pretty hard.

Three Days Grace also has a couple solid and interesting covers, those being their cover of The Chain and their cover of Somebody That I Used To Know.

Viking metal cover of Rasputin. Need I even say more?

Tyr also has a few particularly good covers, those being Stargazer, their cover of I by Black Sabbath, and Where Eagles Dare.

That's about all the covers I can immediately think of that I at least find notable or interesting that I know of, I think. I might think of something else. Maybe.

Remix:

Original:

I think the remix really knocked it out of the park! Enjoyed it more than the original.

XIII - StrangeLove original by Depeche Mode

Index Case - Like A Prayer original by Madonna

Jonathan Davis - It's A Sin original by Pet Shop Boys

Misery Loves Co. - Only Happy When It Rains original by Garbage

The Browning - Blue (Da Ba Dee) original by Eiffel 65

None.
I actually kind of hate the practice and concept of covers. Especially in the modern internet age when you have access to every song ever created at your fingertips, why would you want to listen to a band play something they didn't even write worse than the band that wrote it?

That isn't to say all covers are bad. But I don't really enjoy listening to covers hardly ever.

Speaking of NIN and covers, there is also the drama over "hurt". I like the original better because I think it is more interesting, but I do recognize that Cash's version is also powerful and very well done. Didn't Trent say it was a song that wasn't his anymore or something? :(

I heard that talked about on the radio. Trent said the song brought him to tears.

Jimi Hendrix's version of All Along the Watchtower. Bob Dylan later said that he felt like he was paying tribute to Hendrix every time he sung it.

Boyz II Men's cover of G.C. Cameron's It's So Hard To Say Goodbye to Yesterday was huge. It was all over the place and I was too young to know it was a cover until I saw Cooley High some years later.

The Hooters version of Time After Time. Rob Hyman cowrote the song and The Hooters also performed it live since the 80s. It was released on the Five By Five EP. Not exactly a cover. I guess it's more like a half cover?

This is a live version from 1985. I do like their version a lot.

Oh wow, I thought I replied >_< Nice post @Mr. Daddy I'll try to remember what I wrote >_>

Complete agreement on 10 years cover, and that is one I have note heard before <3 As much as I like Nirvana, I would probably say I do like that one better, but like you said, I love when they make the cover more haunting, menacing etc. And adding piano to a song that did not originally have piano is a way to make me like it :P

All that said, it is interesting how you also brought up the cover of "Mad World" because I think that is a case of just the opposite! I also like the original better because the attempt to make it more haunting and slow kinda backfired and it is a little too slow and boring :( I like the tears for fears version better.

Alien ant farm's cover of smooth criminal had to grow on me, at first I didn't really care for it, but now I actually think it is better (but only very slightly, takes lots of gal to cover the king). They have the same energy, but I like how they condensed it, focusing only on the most catchy parts and made it shorter. So I guess they edge out the original with a "technicality". Kind of same reason I like Halestorm's cover of bad romance over the original.

Yea, Shinedown's cover of Simple Man goes hard, and it is a good, but idk. A stripped down acoustic version doesn't really do it for me for that song. I wonder why that is because some songs I MUCH prefer if there is an acoustic/stripped version... Maybe I just love the original too much? I think it is one of those good cover discussions and theory.

That's fair, but I think many covers are better, especially many covers of 80's songs in particular. Yes, there are great 80's songs but a lot sound too "fluff" to me: they have great lyrics and composition, but I think many are hindered by the sound of the time. @spectresfrommercury brought up Marilyn Manson, and I think that cover of "Tainted Love" is much better than Soft Cell's original. I think it says a lot that even people that aren't the biggest Manson fans (I am not), still find this a banger.

Yea, idk. Covers just don't really do anything for me. There are some I find ok and listen to in occassion, but I just don't like covers. They take up track space on an album that another original song could have occupied.

I DESPISE cover/tribute bands, a lot. They represent the death of art and destroy local music scenes.
