What covers/remixes do you think are better than the original? What covers do you hate because they butchered the original? Which ones do you find an interesting homage? Which ones are just great fun?

Thought of this because came across feuerschwanz cover of Dragostea din tei. Of course, no band can capture the timeless uplifting and happy energy of the original, but the "viking chant" of: Ma-ia-hii, ma-ia-huu Ma-ia-hoo, ma-ia-haa
Is so much fun, I think it gets pretty close to it :3

i think ffx remaster does a good job of remixing the music tracks from the original.

A cover so great that most still think it's the original.
...Tonight I learned it was not the original. Huh.

As for my contributions, first up is Dead Souls by Nine Inch Nails. It was originally a Joy Division song and a very good one at that, but I like Trent's version better. It was also the song that got me into Nine Inch Nails, way back when I got it off Napster. However, you can't lose with either version.

I actually first heard the Tiny Tim cover of this song and the Rod Stewart original later on. Spotify suggested the Revolting Cocks version of it and I've been in love since. I've known about the band since high school, but I've only dabbled in their music, so this came as a surprise. I never thought I'd hear an industrial metal cover of the song, but I'm glad I did.

For my last cover, another industrial metal one! You might sense a pattern with a genre I'm very fond of. Anyway, this is another case where I prefer the cover to the original, the Genitorturers have some good stuff and you've probably never heard them unless you've played Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines and heard their song Lecher Bitch in one of the clubs. The Divinyls original is still darn good, but I choose to rock out.

Is it so great? idk, to me, they are pretty much the same song... Makes me feel bad for slade :( I guess I'll give the QR version some points for the solo?

But yea, speaking of "cover confusion". Many don't realize "Last Kiss" is a cover. But in that case, I do think Pearl Jam made it their own. On that one I am torn, but I slightly lean towards the Cavaliers. The "upbeat" rhythm to such a tragic song makes it more haunting to me, but I completely understand if someone prefers Pearl Jam version: they slowed it down and used just the right sound to make an incredible tearjerker :(

I don't think the original is bad, but I kinda like the remix more (small change though)

For me, Night of Nights is far more iconic than Sakuya's original theme (Flowering Nights).

I don't know my favorite cover, but I know my least favorite. It's nothing against her, I'm sure she's great or whatever, but the cover is so soulless and sleepy, basically removes all the character of the original. Even when he performs it live and it's more sedate, it's still got more life than Scarjo on muscle relaxers
The cover:

The original:

Did you know Konami had an official in house band? They released a few albums in Japan throughout the 90s, including two called "Dracula Battle" which contained music from the Castlevania franchise.
This cover of the Genesis track "Reincarnated Soul" is my favorite from the album.

Once again the Numa Numa song is stuck in my head.

?

Every song covered by Me First and the Gimme Gimmes.

In the same way I hate every Frank Sinatra's songs covered by Michael Bublè.

My friends are really big in to Wipeout and games like that so they tend to listen to a lot of music like this which has gotten me in to it, I think I prefer this one to the original!

WIPEOUT ENJOYER ::poggurai
No wonder that sounds so familiar

ha ha! That is so true for that one. Why would you take a song that is already kind of slow, take out the brass, and just add the most bland keyboard composition to it? That and her voice was making me fall asleep. With those horns and vocals, the original still has energy despite being a slow song.

I'm not a musician, but I would think if you were going to cover a song, the first thing to maybe tweak would be the tempo: take a slow song and energize it, or slow down a song that already has an upbeat tempo. Of course, you probably can't go too far, but that would be my first thought.

Molotov's cover of I turned into a martian is in my opinion so much better (I'm biased)
That is a good cover, and is an example of what makes a good cover: I like that guitar riff, it fits, and overall sounds different. I also love covers in a different language than the original! But I still give it to the Misfits on that one, I am also biased, as I am a big fan.

Speaking of NIN and covers, there is also the drama over "hurt". I like the original better because I think it is more interesting, but I do recognize that Cash's version is also powerful and very well done. Didn't Trent say it was a song that wasn't his anymore or something? :(

An example I think is better than the original is Garbage's cover of "Can't seem to make you mine". The sonics are much different (bound to happen when a 90's band covers a 60's song), but they also give the song a more sulty energy with the change in tempo and Shirley Mason's vocals. So good!

Both versions are great, but I also like the original better. And yeah, Trent did say something like that. Almost exactly actually. "I just lost my girlfriend, because that song isn't mine any more." It was a very interesting choice for Cash to cover a song like Hurt, but it worked really well. It's another case where you can't lose no matter which version you choose.

Might as well drop a few more covers in here. Gary Numan seems to have inspired like every band I've ever listened to, so it's no surprise there's a lot of covers of his music out there. Nine Inch Nails did Metal, Marilyn Manson did Down in the Park, but my favorite has to be M.E. by Wand. It's already my favorite Gary Numan song and I feel the band did it justice with this cover. It was another random Spotify find and I should really look into the band proper sometime, I like their style.

Oh look, another Gary Numan cover! This time by Fear Factory! Huh, interesting. I remember a friend of mine once said his uncle thought he was cooking bacon in his room when he was blasting some Fear Factory. It's so absurd that I can't forget it. Anyway, this is a really great cover, though it almost feels like it's cheating to call it a cover because Gary Numan sings like half the song.

Another random Spotify recommendation. Yes, Silence of the Lambs, Clerks, I know, I know. Goodbye Horses by Q Lazzarus is honestly one of my favorite songs. I don't know exactly what it is, it just really vibes with me, I could listen to it forever. I don't like this cover more than the original, but I still think it's a really great cover from a band I've never heard of before. I should probably check them out sometime too...

Nope, didn't know. That's really cool. Speaking of Castelvania, I know there is some metal cover of bloody tears I love. I like how most videogame music covers go metal. I guess most the iconic music from games is for battles so it fits to go heavy? :3

FF5 is my third favorite FF (after tactics and 8) and clash at big bridge is probably one of my favorite scenarios. Found this cover and love this guy's solo.

This cover of Iris by Sleeping With Sirens. Kellin's voice always gives me chills.

based as hell
