Chrono Cross (PlayStation)

Chrono Cross is a very good game, yet it just doesn't feel like a Chrono Game to me. ::sadkirby

Chrono Cross is a game that lets you travel through guess what....that's right....TIME. But in this go round, it does not really use time in order to do most of the adventuring. You are pretty much going to be going from one world to the other, so it's really just two worlds, unlike Chrono Trigger where you can travel from 2000 AD all the way back to 1400 BC. However, this is a very good RPG and I highly recommend it. I should also point out that I don't feel like this was a true Chrono game. I mean, FROG was not in it. 🐸 However, they did have a guy by the name of Glen in it, but still. ::angrygenjin

Also, just two worlds to visit....I mean, come on now. Anyway, if you are thinking about buying for this game, then by all means take it if you have never played it, although I don't see any reason why someone would have not played this game by now. And if you have played this game and just want it back, heh, you've got my vote. You can't go wrong with it as it's one of the best RPGs out there on the Sony PlayStation, on par with Final Fantasy if you ask me.

Story:
You play as a boy named Serge who meets up with his childhood friend Leena on the beach. Suddenly, a voice calls out to him and Serge passes out. When he awakens, he discovers that things are no longer the same. The people from his village treat Serge as a total stranger and he discovers that both he and his mother are long dead....he's in some kind of parallel world. This is pretty much where the story kicks off and going back and forth through time soon comes into play. Also, you start to learn magic spells and new moves and such. The story is nice, but nothing great. But the plot is the standard "you have to save the world, ONCE AGAIN, from a evil force." So as far as the story goes, I give it a 7/10.

Music:
Very good music, I liked it a lot. I remembered some of the tunes from Chrono Trigger, but some of the new ones could have just been left out. I mean, they suck. I do however wish that they would have remixed more of the older music. I don't know, maybe it's just me, or maybe it's just cause I'm used to the old music.
wry smile
, People these days don't seem to care that much for video game music any more, The older Chrono music was great, but this time around...
wry smile
You may run into 6 or 7 tunes that will make you put down the controller for a little while just to hear the great sounds. That is CHRONO CROSS. So as far the sound goes, I give it a 7/10.

Control:
No problems here. Square did everything just right and you should have no problem finding a button to press in order to get your character to do what you want it to do. Everything works out just fine. I think that this control set up should be used more often in all RPGs. It's just so easy to use and get used too. An Action button, a Cancel button, and all the other buttons that perform all the magic are placed just right. In other words, you won't be hitting the Cancel button in order to attack and vice versa. As a matter of fact, the controls should be like playing Go Fish to you in about five minutes, that's just how easy it is to learn. I give the controls a 10/10. Good job once again, Square!!!

Look of the game:
Well, compared to today's games, it may look limited, but I like that old school look. It was great for its time and it still does look good compared to some today. Good job again, Square. I just hope that somehow Square hooks back up with the Chrono team, because I read on www.rpgamer.com that they had broken up.
frown
It would really be a shame if no more Chrono games get released. I give this a 9/10.

Overall:
Let me just say it once more -- I love this game. It is very good, but again, let me point out that, to me, it just does not feel like a normal Chrono game. But then again, that's just MY FEELING, you may have another.

STORY: 7/10

I agree the soundtrack makes me cry sometimes because of its beauty. No Frog is a big Con hahaha

The ending though for me is a bit rushed but cd memory at that time is limited hahah. I thought Kidd was Chrono at Marles spawn

The gameplay is great, the soundtrack is beautiful, the graphics were great for the PlayStation, and I absolutely loathe the story. I hate it. They took all the victories and hopeful endings of the characters you grew up with and turned them into hopeless tragedy. "But... The Future refused to change." That line is all I think about when I get further into the game and they drop the giant info-dump wall of text that's supposed to make you feel like the two games are connected. Its the same feeling I got when I watched The Last Jedi for the first and only time. I completely reject the story to that game. I can't in any way see how a bumbling idiot like Dalton was the downfall of these highly skilled, powerful beings that mastered Light, Water, Fire, and Shadow magic alongside being incredibly formidable in weapon or hand to hand combat.

But if you like it and it brings you joy then I'm happy for you. I can understand how tragedy can appeal to many as a storytelling angle.

friendly reminder that Chrono Cross shares team with Xenogears and DewPrism/Threads of Fate, even there's some dialogues that were planned for Xenogears ended being used here

technically Baten Kaitos is Chrono's spiritual succesor as many members that worked in Baten Kaitos(including Yasuyuki Honne and Masato Kato) previously worked in both Chrono games

Yes, Chrono Cross definitely feels like an outlier when compared to all the other Chrono games out there...
But the plot is the standard "you have to save the world, ONCE AGAIN, from a evil force." So as far as the story goes, I give it a 7/10.
I mean, I can't argue with that, but isn't this sentiment (along with the entire review, come to think of it) a little reductive?

Everything I said in my previous post aside, I still never finished it and would like to do so someday. The battle system was a lot of fun but I couldn't figure out the final boss. I looked up a guide once and learned the process but I was over the game at that point. I have it on Switch and the original PlayStation still. I really enjoyed using Glenn with the dual swords and Guile was cool to fly around with and battle with. Too bad they scrapped his original concept as Magus/Magil. His storyline might have made the two games actually feel connected in a natural way as opposed to the info-dump they resorted to.

I did not know that. I've enjoyed the Xeno games since I was a kid and I really enjoyed Threads of Fate the one time I played through it. I've never tried Baten Kaitos but I'll have to make it a priority now.

One of the most unique things about this game is the accent system the developers put in place to give each character their own flare in dialogue whilst saving time due to having such a limited localization team. How it would basically work is they'd slap one of the follower characters dialogue through a filter to automatically give characters an accent to save on development time. Sadly that makes for some semi-flat followers since there's not much room for character growth besides their pattern of speech (from what I can remember). Altogether it's a super unique way for them to make ends meet for the monumental task of translating all 40+ followers.

Chrono Cross is a game I treasure very much, like it's predecessor. Even though the conections with Trigger are more subtle, it makes me appreaciate it due to this exact approach. Doesn't need to be a literal sequence to work. If you connect the dots, you can see that many elements are still there, alongside things that were only hinted before. But even without it, it's still a great game on it's own, with a great gameplay and fantastic OST ::chocobo-wave

the soundtracks indeed great. I've finished it back than. still, the mistery one for me was the masamune (masa & mune) serge's weapon, any of u here might be know something about its secret or special traits maybe ? it was a shame that the weapon is outclassed by the rainbow material afterward....

I so fucking feel this. (Excuse my language) I cannot stand how depressing the game felt over this. I refuse to let it ruin my feelings for Chrono Trigger too.

What confuses me though is didn't Radical Dreamers (SFC) come out before Chrono Trigger? And how were the main characters (I think Kid, Serge and Magus) connected to Chrono Trigger?

People gave it too much shit for not being Chrono Trigger 2, but it was never supposed to be, it's a new story set in the Chrono universe, where we see a world dealing with the aftermath of Trigger's events. And remember it's basically a remake/reimagining of Radical Dreamers, which is also not really a sequel but a new story.

I think that the travelling between dimensions/parallel worlds is a good progression from time travel, otherwise it'd be criticized for being repetitive.

I agree that the plot gets a little convoluted at times, but I'd argue that this was a common trend at the time, especially RPGs, going too deeply into deep philosophical deepness. Still, it's really not that hard to follow, even if just at a surface level.

People also dislike the battle system but I actually really like it. It tries to do something new and innovative within the genre, something that CT was also praised for at the time. It has a lot of personalization and nuance without being overtly obtuse.

I won't talk about the music since it's already been mentioned as a highlight. And I'm gonna cry.

The only real downside for me is the number of playable characters. Save for a few that do have their own interesting side stories, there's a lot of them that are there just to be there. Most are skippable tho so no real damage I guess.

I don't feel it was a great game, but at the time (and now, I guess), I don't need every game to be great. The music is great, though. I remember a lot of talk at the time being around Yasunori Mitsuda's use of MIDI instrumentation and the intro song. Most people (myself included) assumed it was orchestrated.

I could never finish this game. Its systems bring me no joy. The story is intriguing, but know where it goes, it feels like a waste.
