Castlevania Megathread

Man, that's brutal... There was news that he'd stepped away from developing Bloodstained 2 last year for health reasons, but I assumed it was just overwork. I never suspected cancer.

RIP Shutaro Iida. You worked on some of my favorite games ever.

Such a shame he won't be there to see Castlevania return to his roots, bless his soul

No one's mentioned Seta's Nosferatu.
Pretty decent game. It's like a cross between Castlevania, Prince of Persia, and a Beat'em Up. My head canon is that Nosferatu takes place in the same universe as Castlevania.
Nosferatu (1994 SNES) takes place in the Castlevania timeline. Taking place in 1990 (as provided by the Game Over/Continue screen), 9 years before the great war with Dracula. Kyle, the bare-fisted hero of the game, is a partial blood descendant of the Belmont clan.

Lord of Shadows stuff doesn't feel as bad anymore. Compared to the Netflixvania, it's super tame.
I love the Castlevania Netflix series. Both of them. I like that the first Lords of Shadow but the mainline second game I really don't care much for. The combat is good, but I really don't like those stealth sections.

The Castlevania shows are good though, why do people dislike them? I never understood. Ah, well.

People like the shows fine, but you have a very few set of hardcore fans mad at either show not being one thousand percent accurate on everything. People forget that the early games did not have much story, until after SOTN happened. Both shows were able to do so much while adapting, so little story wise. Those action scenes are amazing too! Top notch, practical, and stylish. Some of these fans who hate on the shows, are the same people who flipped out over the Lords of Shadows games. Those games sold great too, but a lot of hardcore old fans didn't want to acknowledge them.

Isn't it the one where Alucard got ****** in the *** at some point?
Season 3 sucks and is a waste of everyone's time, barring a few scenes here and there. Season 4 thankfully turned it around.

I've stopped after Season 1 because Dracula straight up died in there so I don't know what to add right after.

Dracula died in Season 2, not the first season.

BTW, Season 4 spoilers: Dracula and Lisa do revive in a post credit scene of the final episode.

So by making everyone swear as if they were on a VizziePop series, adding multiple OCs that in the end accounted to nothing, adding multiple sexual scenes just for the sake of being "mature" and basically ignoring all of Curse of Darkness and ruining its main character means it's a good adaptation?

For the record, I really like the first show. Dracula is an amazing character in it, and the emotional parts with him and Alucard hit hard. And well, the action and the animation are amazing.
But I wouldn't say it's a good adaptation perse. It's a good show, yeah, but is as good of an adaptation as the first Street Fighter movie (which I personally and unironically love and think is a great movie)

Holy crap I didnt remember the thread being so big

It's a good but different adaption as far as I'm concerned. I never played CoD, nor the other 3D Castlevania games, aside from LoS. I know they were mainly taking from Castlevania III, and that's good enough for me. I get some scenes didn't land for people, but I wasn't bothered by it. Now maybe they could have toned it down swearing a little bit, but it once again, didn't bother me. Also, the characters swear less in Nocturne, so there you go.

I don't get the shade thrown at VizziePop. I don't care for those shows she makes, but I see no point ragging on her. Panty and Stocking did a lot of swearing too, but most people praise the show for having more swearing in the English dub. Ironically, Season 2 of P&S doesn't have as much compared to the first season. This is this doesn't hurt the show at all, but not the exact reason why I like it more than the first season. There is further irony as I've seen plenty fans of VizziePop make crossover art with Panty and Stocking characters, and/or characters from Hazbin or Helluva.

I find both Castlevania shows better adaptions, compared to the first Street Fighter movie, or without. SF 1994 I really find dull, aside from Julias as Bison, and the guy who played Zangief. The animated SFII film, and MK 1995 are so much better in gave us what my older brother and I wanted.

Fair enough. I mean, once again, I quite enjoyed the first show, but as a (extremely autistic about it) fan of the games, it did make me lift an eyebrow at some things. And hey, I haven't seen Nocturne yet, so that's another reason for me to finally pick it up (besides having my man Juste in it)!

Although, the thing with CoD is that is a direct sequel to 3, so it retcons quite some things from the (very simple) story that the game had. So adding Hector and Isaac directly into the CV3 story could've been an interesting way to connect those two stories and leave the way for a potential CoD adaptation. But rather, they basically made fun of the main character by making him suffer multiple times (which as a fan of game Hector, it kinda hurts to see), and taking a whole different route with how things went (the biggest example is the Final Boss of S4, if you know, you know).

I was trying to be funny there, but I guess it didn't land XD
like, I've haven't seen any of those shows and neither I'm interested in doing so, so I was mostly talking from what I've seen online about their language. Because honestly, by making the characters swear like sailors just for the sake of it and "making the show more mature" can have the opposite result (for me and some others, at least).
By making the characters (and even the serious villains) swear so much it takes the seriousness of it, and makes it far more immature than anything. Again, the excessive sexual scenes in S3 show that as well. There can be serious and amazing shows that don't have any of those (my biggest example will always be Batman The Animated Series lol)

So I've heard. It varies how hardcore fans feel about how Hector and Issac are treated.

This is exactly why you should never parrot people's opinions/statements/barbs. Especially if you don't know the context, or the people saying them have an axe to grind for the pettiest of reasons. I don't care for the VP shows like I mentioned, but I am able to form my own opinion and not needing the riff raff to do it for me.

Again, the excessive sexual scenes in S3 show that as well.
You're not going to find many defending this scene. Even people who never played the games aren't a fan of this scene.

Unless you're referring to Carmilla or Death, Dracula actually doesn't swear at all. Though ironically, most people did not have a problem with Death swearing. Even the hardcore fans made an exception, because it's Ian McDowell hamming it up.

Branching paths in III was pretty cool, even if some paths were less fun than others.
So I liked it even more when you get something similar to it in Rondo of Blood.
Which are handled like cool shortcuts & what-not.

Four episodes. Though really, the first season is a pilot movie split into four episodes when you stop and think about it for less than a minute.
So this is why I assumed Season 2 was still Season 1, thanks.

I don't really like them in neither Dracula's Curse nor Vampire's Kiss to be honest.

Rondo is the one doing it right because you can replay previous levels.

Kinda unrelated but I just did a playthrough of Castlevania Bloodlines for my first time, and DAMN! I can't believe this isn't talked about much because it's so solid. SCIV is the better game in that it controls better and all, but the level design in Bloodlines is absolutely phenomenal and the music and graphics are great. That said, the controls are still a bit janky with that you have a set jump height and distance, but I've played CV1 and 3 so much that it doesn't bother me...
Might actually be my favorite "classicvania" game, although I still think my favorite CV has to be SOTN.

I don't know why it isn't talked that much, it even made very poor sales when it released. I've read 40,000 units sold at the time. I don't know how much of this is true but I remember tons of factory-sealed Castlevania: Bloodlines popping on eBay in early 2000s

A lot more people started giving praise to Bloodlines around the mid to late 2010s. It's actually my favorite of the classic Castlevania games, and I consider it the best. Yes, better than SCIV and Rondo. I have this game on the Genesis Mini, Castlevania Collection (Switch [Physical) and PS4), and on my RG35XXH with a modded rom too.

Really the only problem with bloodlines is the limited continues, a first for the series i believe, otherwise i agree, of classicvania it's one of the best (i still prefer rondo though).

If you input the cheat codes for extra lives, or playing the japanese version (which you can play in the collection or Genesis Mini), it's no longer an issue. The save states put a kiei bosch on that now.

Rondo I tried to like, but it had too many limitations against it in terms of mechanics. I praise the art direction and soundtrack, but that is all it has going for it to me.
