Bring back the Ban

This place keeps letting the worst scumbag users get off scot-free for continuously breaking the extremely easy to follow rules, spreading vitriol and poison everywhere and at most getting away with a slap on the wrist, only to re-emerge a week later spewing drunken rants breaking rules left and right.

I’d say ”don’t feed the trolls” but the way the site is set up right now it’s like they’re being fed by design, and the rest of us are forced to just look the other way while trying to use the forum like normal people.

The mods are powerless to do nearly anything and keep getting the brunt of the flak because Spike doesn’t want to deal with the occasional angry email from disgruntled ex-members threatening to ”take action”.

This weak Reader Mode shit clearly isn’t working, and just lets toxic assholes keep waltzing around barfing everywhere, and just pushes more and more well-meaning and amiable users out because the trolls and schizos overpower them, and protects the worst offenders from any sort of repercussions.

Let's be so for real, any site with a social section is going to have drama. As mods though, you're supposed to regulate those disagreements people have and those who are rude to others as well. We shouldn't be seeing others being put down. I see favoritism happening on RGT for sure and some go without any punishments.

I'll just point out that we allowed Karnik back after he appealed and he immediately broke that promise, resulting on a permaban that still stands. We also didn't allow the Darth Vader guy back even after multiple appeals -- you are all selectively removing that from your brains to spin a new narrative, making it look like someone putting in the effort is getting some sort of special treatment.

What I mean is, PacGuy and Nebulon aren't on here talking crap with every single post, and I think the crap they do talk (from what I've seen) isn't ban worthy. The only arguements I've seen on here are petty squabbles, nobody is punching below the belt. I would give an example of a hardcore arguement, but nah.

Didn't want to engage in discussion here as I mostly just wanted to lift the suggestion and see what happened, but I'd like to add that literally not a single one of the people I was thinking about when making this thread have made themselves known here.

Okay I'm not sure how Zega managed to make this so confusing but here: Hitman was a different guy, long banned, and we'd ban all his alt accounts. Pac was DrunkOcelot, then Carl, then some other account I never saw, and now this.

My point was that I don't understand why the lack of consistency in bans/reader mode applying. To the original point of the topic, bans are entirely up to Spike. Personally, I don't love that the change in policy came from him being attacked in emails, but that's stressful and I do have sympathy for that. (Probably the only solution long-term would be to just not have a Repo, sadly, it's an exposed nerve to pick at him with. That's kinda what most folks are here for though, so.....eh).

I do think mods should have the ability to ban, ultimately, just because sometimes the situation calls for it and Spike is pretty busy and can't always be around to dole them out himself. By the time I left back in June, we'd banned maybe a couple dozen people over the history of the site, some 8 months or so? (Not counting spam and ban evaders). It's a rare tool, but a useful one. Everything gets logged in reports with comments should Spike need to reference them.

My suggestion would be to spend less time online. I get that people like being online a lot, but it has downsides. Protect your own wellbeing because you cannot rely on mods for that. If you are online less, you will not even notice most of this drama. I am reading about things I have never seen before.

The only reason reason this thread is still around is because there IS meaningful discussion... Every fifth message or so.

Plus, some mods haven't being able to weigh in on it yet, which would make it a tad unfair to proceed without.

The current system could maybe use a few tweaks but overall it's fine. Don't feed the trolls is always the correct course of action. The problem is most people here lack the restraint and maturity to do so. They constantly need to tell the other person what an asshole they are and get the last word in. Engaging with these people just makes things worse. This whole thread is a good example. Report, ignore, and move on.
