Bring back the Ban

This place keeps letting the worst scumbag users get off scot-free for continuously breaking the extremely easy to follow rules, spreading vitriol and poison everywhere and at most getting away with a slap on the wrist, only to re-emerge a week later spewing drunken rants breaking rules left and right.

I’d say ”don’t feed the trolls” but the way the site is set up right now it’s like they’re being fed by design, and the rest of us are forced to just look the other way while trying to use the forum like normal people.

The mods are powerless to do nearly anything and keep getting the brunt of the flak because Spike doesn’t want to deal with the occasional angry email from disgruntled ex-members threatening to ”take action”.

This weak Reader Mode shit clearly isn’t working, and just lets toxic assholes keep waltzing around barfing everywhere, and just pushes more and more well-meaning and amiable users out because the trolls and schizos overpower them, and protects the worst offenders from any sort of repercussions.

The mods here actually do their job wells, and better than most forums left at this point. At least they don't do a "hands off" approach, nor ban you for hypocritical/silliest reasons.

I would generally agree... however I still have a warning for "inappropriate language" sitting on my account from last year because I labeled another user's argument (not the individual) as "r-ded" (and therefore NOT a violation of rule #3). The mod-in-question completely ignored the LONG string of blatant personal insults this person said, before & after my rebuttal, in order to single-out a solitary adjective in a clear display of a lack of reading comprehension.

The other user-in-question has a history of unhinged insulting behavior, and I saw someone else call them out for it just the other day..

It may not be Reddit-level hypocrisy, but it's still annoying...

I should clarify that I don't mean that the mods aren't doing their job or their best (but I can't edit the post now). I meant that it's disappointing that they have to adhere to these frankly insane no-ban restrictions, which isn't something they set up.
Please don't interpret this as me trying to attack them as my post wasn't about them in the first place.

Kamako can't do more than what's designed for her to do. The only things mods can do til Spike appears is trying to de-escalate stuff begging directly to the bad faith actors.

I'll share you one of my forum stories. One time I got temporary banned just for having an opinion on most professional game journalists and even the individual youtube ones. I just said most of them aren't worth listening to, and they counted it as "anti-journal rhetoric" even though I made it clear, I wish no mental nor physical harm and that I just want these people to actually do better, and do their jobs correctly. They tried to twist it and gas light me, but even some of the other users weren't buying it. It didn't matter much because they closed down the review thread, anyway making it even more pointless with the ban. They said it was a "time limit" thing, but they only did it because they got caught with their pants down and didn't want to admit it.

This is a cosmetic solution since people have been reported to evade even the forced mutual ignore feature, intending to harass others.

I don't know if this can be done on Xeno, but what the hell... just a shot in the dark. I know that when you ignore a user, you don’t see them, but why can they still see you? I wonder if there is a way that, if you ignore a user, it automatically makes them ignore you, and they can’t undo...

IP bans, for example, are useless in the age of VPNs and dynamic addresses.

It's a tricky balance to strike -- too little and it's a free-for-all; too much and it's Glory To Arstotzka. And the middle ground rarely satisfies anyone.

Let the abusers pay for their abuse. They're not fucking donating to the website, it's unlikely they're going to subscribe to a reliable VPN. There's too many dynamics of power at play on and offline, let they fall for this.
